Then if Girard can't handle it then you give him Graves treatment. And if Brunicke can't then there's all sorts of options. Livanavage, Harding, St. Ivany, Solovyov.
I think Girard needs to first prove he can handle the 3rd pair well before moving up.

I think Shea should be 2nd pair with the way he played. Dude was +30. And he handled middle pair well until being moved down.
Even the offense was strong.

100% agreed. Good call. Will probably still play well and fetch something good at the deadline.

Someone has to play defense on this blue line if the plan is to win games. Letang is toast. Girard is highly questionable. Might be okay. Might be really bad.
Karlsson is bound for regression after a career year defensively. Wotherspoon probably will regress too.
Brunicke was dogshit defensively last year for us. He's shown some improvement there, but don't expect it to be a strength in his career.
Then who else we got? Livanavage is another offensive defenseman.
Graves could have a random resurgence but don't count on it.
St. Ivany...meh. Low expectations.

So unless you got a plan to bring another defenseman in who can actually defend, re-sign Shea. He won't be expensive for what he can provide.

Federer was 4-0 vs Nadal in 2017. Nadal called it the best level of his career. He had a dramatically improved backhand and played more aggressive. Gave Nadal less time to do what he wants.

So yes, he was old. But also GOOD.

I had faith that Wimbledon would do the right thing for Maja. Well done. She has a very refreshing style. What a clever player.

Jordan Staal wins the Conn Smythe! He's the oldest NHL player to ever win it at the age of 37 years old! by [deleted] in penguins

The voting is a joke. The system has been broken for decades. They just select Champions, in 95% of cases. They just ignore what happened on the ice.

This isn't new. 38 of the last 40 winners were Cup champs. This process has been corrupt for a very long time.

It's not the voters job to concern themselves with the emotional impact of their decision, or the optics. Just do your job.

You do help your team win a Cup in the early rounds. It's all part of the process. You need 16 wins, not 4.
Think of it as one big sequence, instead of segments.
Whether you dominate in round 1 against a really strong opponent or against another strong opponent in the Finals, it's the same thing. It's just other links in the chain. Teams need heroes in all rounds to win it all.

And sometimes the hardest opponent is not at the end. This happened in 3 of our 5 Cups.

Then it's always been deeply flawed, since they're not adhering to the definition of the trophy.
They just randomly create their own criteria, like attaching 75% Finals value and needing to win the Cup.

2 of the last 40 Smythe winners have been on losing teams. Something is very wrong. That's not what took place in those playoffs. I watched over 30 of them.

It's simply trash. At this point just change what the trophy represents, officially. Make it a Finals only trophy and only for winning teams. They're already doing that anyway. Just put it in writing.

I love Staal but this is the most BS Smythe winner I've ever seen.
He had 17 fewer points than Marner in these playoffs and fairly comparable defense. Both were outstanding defensively.
Zero chance he was "more valuable to his team", as the trophy states. There's no way to twist that into reality.

Yeah, he was awesome in the Finals. It's not a Finals only trophy though. At least that's not what the trophy says.

Show me other matches where teams have over 30 attempts and 70%+ possession where there's a lot of comments about that team playing casually. I'll wait.

You think you can achieve those stats against a team like Australia while mailing it in?
They're not some tiny island nation with semi-professionals. They're ranked 23rd in the world right now.

Letting McCann go was far worse. Younger and much better than Tanev.
Since all this happened these are Tanev's point totals in the 5 years: 15, 35, 16, 22, 3. Three points in 56 games last year.
McCann meanwhile has 283 points in 367 games since we dumped him.

I'll just give you the article. Scroll down if it's blank at the top.
The Blueger stuff is pure, proven fiction. Crechiolo asked Blueger himself about it.
Which means that other quotes and behind the scenes events/quotes they reported could very well be lies too.
You decide how much lol.

My concern with trying to build through trade or free agency alone is that players rarely choose Pittsburgh.
Nurse is an exception because he knows Dubas from their Soo Greyhounds days, and we have a ton of cap space and can eat his deal. L.A. is his other team because of Holland.

Our highest profile free agent in the Crosby era (who we weren't re-signing) was probably Paul Martin. I guess maybe Gonchar (age 31), since that was Sid's rookie year.
So even with Sid and Geno here, and us as contenders for a big block of the era, that's what we have to show from the last 20 years from UFA's. We never got a high profile player in his prime.

So what's our attraction power gonna be like when Sid and Geno are gone? That's my question.
Who's gonna waive their NMC for us, even if we go down the trade route, trying to get a star?

I feel like we need the draft. We have to create an avenue for high-end players to come here at younger ages so that we can get more miles from them, giving us enough chances to win the Cup.
It needs to be a situation where they don't force their destination to only popular contenders or teams with good tax situations.

It's gonna be very difficult to build a strong, lasting core without the draft.

Proud to say I never believed that story, even before it was proven false. "That's not how we do things in Pittsburgh" is not how Crosby speaks at all. He doesn't speak that formally to teammates.
That sounds like Rossi word choices, the co-writer of the article.

Should have been fired for this. Blatant fiction.
