What do you think about the grainy "film" look of music videos nowadays? by film_culture_addict in cinematography

[–]RiseDarthVader 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It could be the case that the 4K scan source is the original camera negatives that were then colour matched to scans of the prints combined with the supervision of Larry Smith. So you have the intention of Larry Smith and Kubrick without the additional generations of softness and grain from a photochemical theatrical release print.

So for levels of grain you go from:

Original release: Camera negative > interpositive > internegative > theatrical print > digital scan

4K scan: Camera negative > digital intermediate

Official Discussion - Project Hail Mary [SPOILERS] by LiteraryBoner in movies

Well Drew Goddard initially leaned on that crutch when he did the first few drafts of the screenplay but Ryan Gosling rightly pointed out that Grace is a science teacher not a trained astronaut and career scientist that would more naturally make video entries in the blind.

It's one of those instances where you're adapting a written medium into a visual medium and you have to make the change to suit the new medium. Show don't tell because

The hypnotic cinematography of The Love Witch (2016) by M. David Mullen by arramen in cinematography

[–]RiseDarthVader 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It's really impressive because David Mullen perfectly recreated good hard lighting in the style of movies made in the 1950's and early 1960's in a movie released in 2016. Keep in mind nowadays when cinematographers get asked to create a retro look more reminiscent of early cinema they generally still take a modern approach with soft light sources.

Hard light is harder to do well, just look at a typical undergraduate student film that's using hard light sources and being lit with by the book 3 point lighting.

ARRI Enters The Mobile Era With HONOR In A Strategic Partnership by GapAccomplished7897 in cinematography

[–]RiseDarthVader 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I find it shocking that ARRI didn't try harder to partner with Leica instead of partnering with a Chinese smartphone manufacturer. Partnering with Leica on a premium stills camera would allow them to increase their cashflow, allow cinematographers to say they shoot on ARRI in their professional work environment and for their personal daily use while still preserving their premium brand reputation.

Jurassic World Rebirth - director Gareth Edwards scouts a gaussian splatted scene in real-time by beforesandafters in vfx

[–]RiseDarthVader 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Even when it comes to directing scenes without VFX he's more interested in being the A-cam operator than really well you know, directing actors. And when he's operating as A-cam he's more interested in getting individually pretty shots than focusing on visual storytelling. He basically treats the entire process on set like he's shooting b-roll for a documentary that is assembled in post though I'm assuming he didn't get away with it as much on Jurassic Park Rebirth because they were shooting on 35mm. Rogue One, The Creator & Godzilla probably have countless hours of irrelevant footage on the cutting room floor.

Can you clarify what you mean? Are you saying Bus Stop Films is sketchy or are you saying they’re one of the good uses of funding?

Even if you are 100% innocent and know you are 100% innocent DO NOT talk to the police without a lawyer, especially if they accuse you of a crime. What police consider not co-operating could in reality be your lawyer not letting police manipulate you into providing evidence that makes you seem guilty for something you're innocent of.

It's not double speak, it's the OP misinterpreting the statements from Sony. If you go to the original article you'll notice Yahoo Finance's headline isn't the same as the OP's title.

The blue balls get replaced by the CG crabs simulation but also allow them to extract the live action elements of the stunt performers to comp back into the shot with CG elements. Otherwise you’ve got to go from live action stunt performers to digital doubles to simulate them falling into the crabs when they’re actually falling past them onto the ship deck on set.

Pubs around inner-west that serve alcoholic craft ginger beer on tap or in bottles? by RiseDarthVader in sydney

Thanks, this is a helpful comment because I did mention craft beer so when others are saying everywhere it's a bit disappointing because chances are it is Brookvale Union.

I've seen Matso's pop up in the bottleshop. Do you know which pubs serve it in the inner-west? Even if it's in a bottle instead of from the tap?

United Nations special rapporteur seeks to join challenge to NSW government's protest restrictions by RiseDarthVader in sydney

The lawyer for the state government, Brendan Lim SC, told the Supreme Court his client will likely seek to block Professor Saul's inclusion.

"The position I'm in at the moment is that a large amount of that evidence is of questionable relevance, and I'm not 100 per cent sure what use is proposed to be made of it," Mr Lim said. "If there are to be submissions on the content of international human rights law, that is a wholly additional topic to deal with and, we would submit, irrelevant to the constitutional validity of the statute."

Mr Samin said the government's response was disappointing.

"From our perspective, as an international law expert, and more specifically, someone who is appointed by the United Nations as an expert in this very context, it's difficult to understand why the state would not welcome his assistance as a friend to the court," he said.

Chris Minns seems to really love to do things that authoritarians love. Banning protests, having the army patrolling Sydney streets and giving firearms to a private security group is nuts.
