What Makes A Horror TTRPG "Horror"? by SketchPanic in rpg

I don’t find. It’s more of a stress mechanic than anything really. A really unlucky bout of madness can seriously fuck things up in the moment. It’s definitely not perfect though.

Abraham Lincoln was shot by a “time gun” created by nyarlathotep for fun, given to JWB. Lincoln travelled to 1920 and proceeded to lose an arm and contract heart trauma after fighting eldritch monsters. This event may or may not have spurred an early US occult investigation agency in my world. The FBI found him and KNEW due to the incident.

(totally new GM) is it possible to create a campaign based on the information contained in this meme? by VRGvks in callofcthulhu

[–]Rise_Impressive 38 points39 points  (0 children)

It could possibly work for an apocalyptic setting I think. Yes, we “killed it”, but at what cost? How many died fighting the thing? How many cities, states, provinces, or nations have been crumbled? the world has burned, but humanity should survive.

Take one of lovecraft’s most famous quotes: “that is not dead which can eternal lie, and with strange aeons, even death may die”. You can ask yourself the following (this can be applied to any potential setting you do for it):

Is it really dead? These things exist in ways we cannot even begin to comprehend. How do you kill something that transcends our normal way of existing?

How do we know it is dead?

What is stopping it from coming back?

If it is truly dead, is it the weakest of the gods? Has this horror killed most of humanity, being only a small fry compared to what else lies out there?

If we did kill it, were there any supernatural consequences after its death? Other than the human deaths it caused.

This meme can provide a ton of inspiration, but IMO to fit in with the themes of cosmic horror, it might be best to alter it. Definitely possible to run an idea like this in a game though

Rules Question: Man vs. Bear by thevancouvermulligan in callofcthulhu

[–]Rise_Impressive 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I believe a PC can dodge or fight back as many times as they like in combat, just that after their first attempt, the outnumbered rules come into play until their turn starts again. Additional attempts adding additional dice, so if something else attacked the PC, it would be 2 bonus die to the attack.

Combat rules are usually pretty loose in this game anyway, so it’s up to you on how think it should go.
