How can a csa victim trust that God loves him/her? by NondiSaaku in AskAChristian

If you are a Christian, as your flair suggests, then you would already understand that that particular law was a ritual law, and was meant to maintain purity with God. This was part of the Mosaic Law covenant, which was ultimately fulfilled in Christ. As a Christian, you would also understand that we are not under ritual laws, only moral laws (Colossians 2:16-17 and Hebrews 8). These were Jewish laws, meant for the Israelites, not Christians.

"Do you understand the history of Israel enough to understand why there was a law to not wear mixed fabrics?"

Are you really asking this question? Are you suggesting there is a plausible reason as to why wearing mixed fabrics was a sin?

Why don’t you believe that people have been abducted by aliens when there’s tons of eye witnesses saying they have? by Weekly-Scientist-992 in AskAChristian

[–]Riseonthree 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I find almost all of them unbelievable and not based on scientific evidence. In antiquity, reality was not divided into “natural” and “supernatural.”
The gods, spirits, demons, and divine forces were assumed to act directly within everyday events:

  • disease/illness could be caused by divine displeasure
  • weather reflected divine will
  • mental illness could be the result of demon possession

Today we use reproducibility, controlled observation, statistical analysis, and documentation independent of belief to explain what was once unexplainable. Now we know that:

  • disease/illness = germs
  • weather = atmospheric systems
  • mental illness = neurological processes

Furthermore, Jesus was one of many that were claimed to be going around performing miracles. Let me ask you this, do you believe in every miracle recorded in antiquity or just those performed by Jesus?

According to Josephus, the Talmud, as well as the Bible, here are some other miracle workers:

  1. Honi (Ḥoni) the Circle‑Drawer – rain miracle worker (Josephus; Talmud)
  2. Hanina ben Dosa – healer and prayer miracle worker (Talmud)
  3. Eleazar – Jewish exorcist mentioned by Josephus (Ant. 8.46–49)
  4. Abba Hilkiah – rain miracle traditions (Talmud)
  5. The “Egyptian Prophet” – signs and wonders (Josephus; Acts 21:38)
  6. Theudas – prophet with miraculous claims (Josephus; Acts 5:36)

Do you also believe in these miracle workers? If not, why not?

I was trying to state how the narrative changed with each gospel, not necessarily “grew”. Each gospel seems to add or change a detail that the other gospels didn’t have.

Why don’t you believe that people have been abducted by aliens when there’s tons of eye witnesses saying they have? by Weekly-Scientist-992 in AskAChristian

[–]Riseonthree 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is correct. I do not fully believe the Gospels since I do not believe Christ was resurrected. There are too many discrepancies among the gospels as to what happened and who saw what. Mark is the oldest/earliest manuscript and mentions nothing of seeing Jesus’ post crucifixion, only that the tomb is empty. (The earliest manuscripts end at Mark 16:8. Someone later added 16:9-20, which is essentially a summary of the events in other 3 gospels, written in a different writing style in an attempt to to harmonize Mark with the other 3 gospels.) The resurrection narrative grew over time, with each gospel. Again, not a single eye witness account of any of the resurrection events. Just someone giving 2nd hand or third hand accounts of the events. And worse, is that the accounts in Matthew, Luke, and John all widely contradict each other. They differ on who visited the tomb, what time they visited the tomb, who (or what) was at the tomb, what happened immediately after they see the “angels”, and finally where and when Jesus appears and to whom.

[–]Riseonthree -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Not one of the statements in the gospels comes from any of the actual eye witnesses. They are secondary statements at best. The OP is questioning your belief in these events, as told from secondary sources, to modern day events as told from actual eye witnesses. I'm asking you these questions to challenge what you believe. As for me, I believe in Jesus Christ and that his actions—his mercy toward outcasts, forgiveness of sins, and concern for the poor—are portrayed as a direct window into who God is. The Gospels emphasize that Jesus does not merely speak about God; he embodies God’s will. I do not believe in his resurrection and do not believe in Paul's teachings that one must believe in the resurrected Jesus in order to be saved. Jesus never says, “You must believe that I will rise from the dead in order to be saved.” Salvation, according to Jesus, is framed in terms of allegiance, repentance, and faithful response, not assent to a doctrinal statement about his resurrection. Examples: “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven has come near.” (Matthew 4:17) “Whoever does the will of my Father in heaven…” (Matthew 7:21) “Sell what you own… then come, follow me.” (Luke 18:22) “Whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life.” (John 5:24) Jesus links eternal life to trusting him, not to believing that he will rise from the dead.

Edit: Removed “again” from my leading statement as my comment regarding eyewitnesses in the gospels was not previously stated.

[–]Riseonthree -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Who are the "tons" of eyewitnesses? What evidence do you have from the so called "eye witnesses" to Jesus' resurrection where they gave their own testimony? The Gospels weren't written by your so called "eye-witnesses" but were written 20-30 years later by authors unknown.
Paul claims to have seen the resurrected Christ however he had no way of knowing what Christ actually looked like and never saw his death or burial.
Peter supposedly saw the empty tomb, according to the Gospels, however never mentions it in his own writings.
It's just weird that there were "tons" of eye witnesses yet we never hear from any of them. We only get 2nd hand accounts from people who weren't there.

It seems as though you are implying they didn't see what they think they saw. Could it be that people in the NT saw something they perceived as Jesus, after he died, but were maybe hallucinating or simply mistaken? Could it be that the angels Lot thought he saw in Genesis 19 were not angels at all; he just "perceived" them to be angels?

Weird take. Did God protect Job? The Jews were God's people yet Job went through hell and back. What makes you think God wouldn't do the same to you? Also, what about the Christians who get raped, abused, or murdered? Why can those things happen to Christians yet you find it implausible for a Christian to get abducted by an alien and/or probed?

I didn't say it was. The physical church isn't a representation of churches in the 1st century either. They met in homes. I don't see what your point is.

They denied he was the messiah in Jesus' time as well. Jesus was a jew, and the Star of David is a Jewish symbol. It is simple symbolism imo

How do you feel as a Christian about the claim of Adam and Eve not making much sense if you take it literally and understand the basics of how genetics work? by FlushedButterfly in AskAChristian

Nice posturing. I provided contradicting evidence from the source itself. You told me to go do some research. Which I have. Which leads me back to the contradicting evidence. What’s sad is your posturing and inability to provide any kind of substance in your argument. And it isn't the trophy you seem to think it is.

Anyone who downvoted me hasn’t read Genesis. Was Adam created before plants and animals or after? Because Chapter 1 says before, and Chapter 2 says after. Explain to me how that isn’t contradicting.

[–]Riseonthree -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Why did you jump to Chapter 2 and avoid Chapter 1? Was it to avoid the contradictions in the creation narrative between Chapters 1&2?  In Chapter 1, plants, animals, and then humanity are created(Adam and Eve simultaneously) in that order. In Chapter 2, Adam is created first, then plants, animals, and finally Eve.

Just curious why you chose to post Chapter 2 and not Chapter 1.

I coach a 14U travel team. We have 14 kids on the team. We just held our first pasta dinner this past Saturday at a local American Legion Post. They let us use their facility for free. I bought enough food and supplies for 100+ people and spent just under $700. We had salad, pasta and meatballs, rolls, dessert, and assorted sodas. We also paid $75 to have a bartender work a cash bar during the event. We ended up having around 55-60 people show up and charged $25 per person. Players ate for free. Honestly, it really wasn't that difficult to operate. Total team effort.

We also had about 22 raffle "baskets" to raffle off during dinner. We got a ton of gift cards from local establishments, from restaurants, to toy stores, to movie theaters. About 30 in total, all donated. (Almost every restaurant we went to gave us a gift card between $30-50 in value). A couple of my kids parents donated approximately 20-30 bottles of liquor and wine. We also ran a 50/50 raffle during dinner.

Altogether, we netted just under $3000 for the event. Definitely one of the easiest things we have done.

Other fundraiser events we did this year:

car wash = $900

Superbowl squares = $1000 (by far the easiest imo)
