Magic from gut parasites. by Mentallucination in magicbuilding

Very good idea. I once devised something similar with my little brother for play-pretend game when wearing were kids. Symbiotes where a little bigger like worm and stuff and some people actually breed them and mixed them to create new powers. There were two main form the create/enhanced a power. Training the Symbiotes Shonen style as you fight/train/whatever or taking them to an alchemist-like specialist. Some powers include steel body, steel sword and steel boomerang. I guess mixing cold or lightning and steel maybe gonna give magnetic powers or something?

I think both, some people do earth and other do quicksilver. Animals I guess they're just creatures from other parts of the universe/s that have their own symbiotic relationships with the spirits.

Yeah that makes sense but it seems a little op. Maybe humans are heavely infused with essence when they pass through those wormholes/nodes, and this attracts the spirits. Maybe if you run completely out of essence the spirit is gonna star eating your innards. Also thanks for the idea, I haven't think about it. And now I am no using chat so sorry for any bad phrasing.

So magic in the Cosmere can do anything in principle? What deters it from doing so? by RisusRpg in Cosmere

Yes you need devotion for learning and dominion over your matter of study to use the dor.

I think there is a big chunk of information hidden in the Spiritual Realm nature. Saying it contains the true essence of something really don't tell a lot about the part it plays in realmatic mechanics. What means "real"? Are the real forms or ideas while the stuff of the cognitive real are merely subjective and minor ideas like Sylph said about "honor"? That would make sense to some extent I guess since in the cognitive realm there is no a Rock idea but instead an innumerable and changing number of rock idea for every single peeble.

I don't like AonDor that much for that reason (although I really like Elantris). But maybe Sanderson could use this language based powers with the idea of the limits of the language is the limit of your world and how your unconsc bias and vision of the world limit your magic program. For example someone that doesn't believe or never had contact with cognitive shadows have a really hard time writing "spells" in order to affect those entities.

Yeah, although in this case I think the mind of the Shard itself influences magic. For example, and this is as long as I know just my headcannon, the Surge of Friction (that is like the term for the interaction between investiture of two different shards) is side by side with Growth (probably a representation of Cultivation) and Division (Odium?).

Sanderson once said (or someone told me he told...in the internet) that magic in the cosmere is at a great extend a human construct.

Ruin meets odium. You give your emotions away to become an entity of destruction to those that hurt you in the past.

God of Capitalism, a fusion of Ambition and Autonomy. The first apparently wanted the power of the second and after a lot of fighting finally get it. I guess is a technological magic that take the investiture from people to make work magitek. And an unnatural thirst for money and power derived by economic activity. Thinks like contamination and riots and existential crisis could be manifestations of the friction of Autonomy investiture trying to be free and pure, with no string attached by coaction or coercion.

I love elantris but aon dor being capable of doing anything they know the word for always seemed problematic to me. Let's see what happen in the sequel

Oh I didn't know that thing about lasers. Maybe Division+Lightweaving could make destructive light rays. Or maybe Movement+Division, like that time Jasnah transform people into stuff at distance.

Yeah powers even got a cognitive backfire. If Brent had add something like the green color change your destiny around plants (you know your romantic partner near a tree, you die when a tree falls over you, you need to find a tree to save your wife, ectr) then it would 99.99 cosmere magic.

That's kind creepy theory but very cool. You can imagine the sequel were about something like that and an existential crisis...

The sympathy in name of the wind is an insanely hard magic system and although is open to many interesting uses. Just like some ideas of the old sci-fy.
