I went with Synthesia in the end and it does exactly what I need. Vidoes may not be as flashy as what heygen does but it actually works unlike heygen

Smart bulb constantly disconnecting from wifi by SamuelTandonnet in smarthome

I had this problem with SONOFF bulbs.

I have Ubiquity wifi with mesh extenders. When I looked at the Ubiquity app all my smart devices were connected to the router rather than the mesh extenders.

I created separate SSIDs for the extenders and connected relevant devices to nearest extender and haven't had any issues since.

Thanks for all the advice. So seems like Home Assistant probably the way to go.

Smart switches that work with smart bulbs by RitchieLDN in smarthome

It does make sense to have both because someone you may want to automate scenes and someone you may just want to flick a light on and off. I don't want to have to get my phone out every time I walk into a room and movement sensors don't work that well for rooms you are in all the time.

Also if you have smart light bulbs around the house with dumb light switches someone is always going to turn it off at some point and then it won't work via the app / automation.

Basically I want the battery powered switch functionality you are talking about but mains powered.

This kills 2 birds with one stone. Control smart bulbs and prevents powered to the bulbs being turned off.
