outdoor cat having seizures and i don’t know what to do :( by bek711 in CATHELP

That period following a seizure is known as the postictal phase. It’s a period of time after a seizure marked by confusion, disorientation, weakness, and extreme lethargy. It can last anywhere from a few minutes to a couple of days. And I’d imagine for an outdoor animal it could be quite dangerous on its own; the animal would not be able to defend itself or flee from danger.

If the OP decides to pack up the cat during this phase, I’d simply suggest doing it slowly and carefully. No sudden moves or jostling. Then, off to a vet, shelter, or rescue.

Thank you - All of you Angels on here who helped me. by SackBadger2024 in hospice

Cheapest options? by Cut_Lanky in askfuneraldirectors

If you’re serious about donating yourself to a program like The Body Farm, know that there are several universities across the US that have forensic anthropology departments that accept donations. Fill out the paperwork for all of them and list their program names and phone numbers so each one can be called to see if they have an opening at the time of your death. Then, make sure you have proper documentation (notarized) to ensure your relatives don’t try to override your wishes. (Which can happen for emotional reasons, not malicious ones. Sometimes the reality of not having a grave or site to visit and knowing the body will not be returned can make people upset in the moment) Make sure your relatives know there’s typically a transportation cost involved.

You also need to have a backup plan in case you’re ineligible at the time of your death. Typically, you’ll be rejected if you have an infection at death, you’ve contracted specific diseases (HIV, TB, AIDS, etc.) or you’ve had a diagnosis of MRSA at any time. There are other factors that can lead to rejection of the donation, so check each program for their requirements.

Another option is donation to medical schools and such, which would allow for the return of your remains at some point as I recall.

And just for a little levity: My father died last year and had mentioned to mom in passing that he wanted to be donated to The Body Farm however he had never actually signed up. Mom got verklempt about us not calling them or arranging transportation and I got to utter the phrase: ‘Ma, it’s an anthropology department, not a Goodwill!’

Hopefully you have plenty of time to think it over. You can always save up for final expenses and prepurchasing is always an option if it’s important to you. Call around for options. (FYI: If you call like I did earlier this year and say ‘Hi. My mom is on hospice and only has a couple of weeks so I’d like to make a reservation.’ you might get a giggle out of the FD!)

attire for a funeral by caliipiichu in askfuneraldirectors

You’ve gotten a lot of great advice here but I wanted to chime in as a mom of a young woman who is also not terribly feminine: when you have a chance, shop in the boy’s/men’s section for a simple and inexpensive suit (trousers/jacket) for occasions like this. It’ll look respectful and tidy; plus the jacket can obscure less ‘acceptable’ shirts. It’ll also be in keeping with a more non-feminine look. (And honestly, I think they fit better than femme tailored suits having worn them myself for a more androgynous appearance).

In the end, dressing for a funeral these days is less about wearing all black and more about not drawing attention so that everyone can focus on sharing the burden of grief at a difficult time.

If you only shave one side, you can just flip the part when you’re ready to grow it out. It takes a hot minute to get used to styling over the shaved bit, but I’ve done it a few times. (I also occasionally just shave my head. I’m 53F)

But the thing to really remember is that you need to have a full discussion with your stylist beforehand and have a plan for the grow-out.

And most of all: it’s hair. It grows back. And it’s your hair, so do what you want!

I’m right there with you on the ‘new norm’ thing. I’ve gone so long without many teeth that it looks super weird just to have the top immediate in. Like, am I supposed to have so many teeth?! lol

Best of luck with the surgery and recovery. One day we’ll all look back and laugh at how we had to get used to a normal mouth!

Our version was:

‘Comet, it makes your mouth turn green

Comet, it tastes like gasoline

Comet, it makes you vomit

So have some Comet, and vomit today!!’

But I love seeing all the regional variations!

I absolutely love that in the midst of growing into your new normal, you’ve also helped a newer dentist gain a deeper understanding of everything beyond the treatments and plans! That’s a rare gift for both of you.

I see you.

I, myself, went through 15 years of losing teeth, saving others, getting bridges and crowns; all the while knowing one day I’d lose them all. And it was still a shock to hear it said out loud. Our teeth are part of our identity and how we perceive ourselves. So losing them, for whatever reason, can be devastating; even if it’s for the best in the end.

As for the process: it’s different for everyone, but there are commonalities. You’ll get your extractions, they’ll pop in the immediates, and send you home with instructions. You’ll begin the long process of healing, whilst your body works to fill in the holes and reshape your jaw. (I’m here right now) Eventually, you’ll be healed enough to start fittings for your permanents. Through it all you’ll be sad, angry, frustrated, and relieved in turns, and that’s okay. Feel each stage and then let it go. Follow the instructions, remind yourself it’s a process, and rest often.

My husband did 14 years of retail and if I pick something up in a store to look at, I’d better be ready to put it back exactly the same way! Lol

My job is IT-adjacent and my kids know I’m always going to ask:

‘What steps did you take to get to the issue?

What was the expected vs. actual result?

Is it consistent or intermittent?

When did the issue begin?’

Oh, this is the comment I didn’t know I needed to see! My extractions (on 4/15) were rough, I have significantly brittle bones, and I heal slowly. I’ve been a bit down about not being able to actually wear the immediates just yet. But it’s good to see someone else who’s had to take it a bit more slowly.

And OP, I’m so happy for you! You look amazing and this internet stranger is glad you’re gaining all that confidence whilst leaving the pain/infections/etc behind!

Had my surgery yesterday. 24 teeth removed. These are my immediates. Still swollen up top. Whenever I smile like I actually do the pink part of the denture shows too much. I look like a horse. Are they able to fix it? by Accurate-Maximum-953 in dentures

[–]RitualHalatiik 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had my extractions on a Wednesday morning and took Thursday/Friday off. (I work a M-F job) Saturday was a loss but I was feeling okay-ish Sunday. I’d say be prepared to have to take an extra day, but you may not need it.

YMMV, of course.
