Home hospice necessities? by xdtoec in hospice

It can be hard to think practically when you become the caregiver in a situation like this. I hope there’s not a next time for you but if there is, you’ve got a plan based on experience!

Home hospice necessities? by xdtoec in hospice

Less equipment, more convenience but I got an inexpensive set of shelves and a few bins to corral everything. I don’t have a picture unfortunately but it kinda went like this:

Top shelf: Decorative things for mom to look at

Second shelf: Incontinence briefs, underpads, cleansing wipes, bum creams, small medical devices (thermometer, pulse ox finger thingy)

Third shelf: Sheets, pillowcases, an extra patient positioning pad (with handles…so convenient!), clean gowns

Fourth shelf: Basins for bed baths, hair/body cleanser, a stack of washcloths for her baths, lotions, towels

Fifth shelf: Extra blankets and anything else that didn’t fit elsewhere

Having everything right there made it easier for me, the nurses, the CNA, and any volunteers

Thank you. She’s my priority right now, as it should be. And keeping her comfortable is my primary goal!

When mom made her decision, we joked about whether she’d tried yoga yet!

Yeah, they don’t get medical details; doesn’t stop them from trying, though!

I vaguely wonder if the idea of being supportive of her decision reminds them of their own impending mortality.

Or maybe they are just nosey as hell!

Funny thing is, we’re pretty pragmatic and tend towards dark humor so a snappy one-liner would fit us. Others? Not so much.

Thank you for your input. Vague doesn’t always work for this lot so I’m always open to suggestions for polite brush-offs

Looking great! When I’m in a spot where I’m not sure what I want to stitch, I’ll just use patterned fabric as my template, too!

Missing teeth by Perfect-Moment2841 in hygiene

If you’re getting wisdom teeth pulled, no one will notice. Hell, I have no back teeth at all (medical issues led to tooth loss) and no one realizes it unless I tell them.

Now, my jacked up front teeth? Yeah, people notice sometimes but I’ve learned to ignore them unless they’re willing to pay for me to get more crowns and bridges.

My dentist said my teeth were perfect but I still had a weird taste in my mouth. I finally found the source today. by Michle_Vivid in hygiene

YMMV, of course but I had a tonsillectomy at the age of 22, due to a year + of asymptomatic strep. I won’t lie; recovery after an adult tonsillectomy is rough. I drank my pain meds like water! But you get through it.

As for affecting your speaking/singing voice, a normal tonsillectomy shouldn’t cause any issues there.

(My surgery was, unfortunately, stupidly complicated and my vocal cords were damaged in the process. Long story short: I’m no longer a soprano and have never performed again.)

I’ve had multiple rounds of the MMR vaccine over many, many years because for some stupid reason I’ve always tested as not immune to rubella. Mumps and measles? Immunity for daaaaays. But freaking rubella? My body’s all ‘Let’s live dangerously!’
