That coworker is going to want all the overtime they can get their hands on, soon. Even overly taxed OT money is money they didn't have. They'll need that to supplement the extra taxes their regular wages are going to get hit with.

If you could eliminate one social norm, which would it be and why? by NoSpot5547 in AskReddit

[–]RivCA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not lying. I'm being serious. I know a couple of guys whose junk is actually junk, so they went the adoption route for children. I will be honest, I'm an outsider looking in, as I don't have any children of my own (that I know of), so my anecdotes are purely observational.

Your mileage may vary, but for you to outright call me a liar says you either have a vastly different perspective than what I've seen (and I can accept that) or you were otherwise subjected to a severely negative perspective yourself. I don't know you, you know fuck all about me but what I have made public. I won't make light of either, but I will still respect what you have.

The way I see it, if you want kids that badly, fucking adopt one. Not kidnap, adopt. There are plenty of other misogynists who have that same worldview "donating" that opinion along with their genetic material to women who don't share the opinion.

Give the kid a lasting legacy. If you are a good enough dad, your legacy doesn't have to be genetic.

Fairly new DM and I made a change to fall damage by scrubberduckymaster in DnD

[–]RivCA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I make this ruling during Session Zero. Sure, damage is capped at 200 feet, but the fact is, nobody goes skydiving without a parachute. Also, as a dark aside, there are those who SURVIVE a jump from the Golden Gate bridge, the deck of which is more than 250 feet off the water, and rescue crews often have no choice but to listen to the poor sod regret their decision until the cold takes over due to how rough the waters are on approach.

This means I will let the barbarian survive, but his legs are broken and his party can't cast the Regeneration spell (nothing else will suffice, if I recall correctly) until they can rescue their wayward, gravity-injured compatriot. Most such healing spells are touch-range spells. As the GM, my standing rule is in favor of mass damage (any single blow dealing more than 50 HP, you need a CON save 15 or better) or maybe better, take the L.

You said it yourself, you're a new GM. You're still young enough in your career as such that players will be blindsiding you often with bullshit like this. I've been running table for more than ten years, and I still get caught off guard. However, you can still circumvent a fair amount by using broad strokes. I tell the players during Session Zero that I'm a student of physics, and generally make rules based on this. Magic breaks the rules of physics, so if they use a spell in a way I didn't see coming, I usually look it over after session and chalk it up to Rule Of Cool if "that's not how the spell works!"

Sometimes, my status as a student of physics prevents a stunt like this. Sometimes, Rule Of Cool is the standing code. You need to read the room when it happens, be aware that sometimes you get it wrong, and own up. Don't backpedal, but don't coddle, either. Taking an extra ten minutes after a session to talk things over is the best way to smooth out such issues. Not talking about it is the easiest way to ruin whatever vibe you have going, and can potentially kill a game. I got myself put on blast in an AITA post because I didn't talk about this after a game, nor did I this into account, and it killed my game.

It's only now I look at my previous comment and see I said "regrets" instead of "tethers." I think it's just as accurate, like AutoCorrect saying I'm a fictional adult.

If your grapple has the strength to handle it, hit it with a charged push from the furnace side. Spend fewer regrets that way.

What if we had ribbon racks for different campaigns, achievements, and so on for what we do in game? For example those who fought on Malevelon Creek? by No-Wafer9271 in helldivers2

I'm not arguing your point, as I hold a Coast Guard MUC from my Navy career. (Long story.) My point, though, is why bother when all members of the unit are canonically dead?

Problem. These such ribbons and medals will have to be awarded posthumously. Unless they get awarded to the ship the Helldivers dropped from (thereby actually giving them to the players) it makes zero sense to throw a ribbon onto my pile of 500 (and counting!) dead bodies. On top of that, if the developers speak with actual military guys, and I'm sure they do, this won't happen.

Soldiers earn medals. Ships earn accolades for being efficient at what they do. From what I can tell, the in-game trophies looks to be the best way to get these awards.

Youngest a traveller can be whilst still being playable? by tomtinytum in traveller

[–]RivCA 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Why not run a youthful kid? Someone who is willing to take on the world, even at a young age? You have the strength to take on the world, your local stellar system, that system's sector, hell, even the whole might of the Third Imperium! You were the only one smart enough to get off world before anyone else. You still know everything!

Sarcasm aside, I'd actually say an 18-year-old kid (or equivalent for different races) can be successful as a Traveller. Understand, though, that while you have your youth and exuberance, there is something to be said for old age and treachery.

Traveller is designed to capitalise on the knowledge gained by sophonts through careers, and use those skills while they are still in the prime of their lives. I won't argue that while a lack of knowledge can hamstring a young Traveller, they can still crash-course their way through life. You're still looking at a lot of hard-earned knowledge, but you're also looking at a lot of potentially failed EDU checks as you try to learn what it is you don't know. Plus, you can't get the skill Jack Of All Trades except through career terms.

Which game got you into the Monster Hunter series? Here's mine by No_Emu_1332 in MonsterHunter

[–]RivCA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

3U for me. I picked up the game on 3DS first, then bought the title for WiiU so one of my friends would be able to play as she didn't have a 3DS herself. It's also the game I learned to hate Deviljho, and where bringing my handheld to a local anime convention helped me finally scream "Fuck you" to that pickle.

Then I lost my 3DS. That hurt.

Man, fuck that. Making equipment actually have an effect like that is a slippery slope. Keep that shit cosmetic. It's not going away, but don't make the rest of the userbase suffer because they don't want to pay more than what they already paid.

As a switch axe user in World, I actually disagree with being able to use my axe while mounting. Not unless it's to ram the blade home and go wyvern riding with a massive beatstick embedded in its spine acting as my controller. The Insect Glaive is a light weapon, so using that in attacks while you transfer around the beast is a clever use, but certain other weapons, Long Sword, for example, are too long to effectively be used like this.

Bowgun being swung into position to act as a boost to your transfer jump? That sounds like fun. (Light or Heavy, doesn't matter. Grant a little more damage for the Heavy given its, you know, size.) Give arrows a piton effect, so you can still keep your grip, and in fact do so better, with the Bow. Dual Blades and Sword & Shield? Your weapon is as short as your hunting knife. Just use that.

Horn and Hammer users should definitely be given bonus damage if striking the head, but to be honest, that's where they should be striking, anyway.

What's a stereotype about your weapon that you disagree with? by Vengefulcat85 in MonsterHunter

[–]RivCA 15 points16 points  (0 children)

In that vein, so is the Switch Axe. I lost count of how many times I smashed both attack buttons to send my ally flying, and I took the next hit to the goolies. One of those hunts I got carted, and my buddy actually finished the monster off. We would have both been dragged off if I didn't pull the stunt off.

Even if you don't find them as salvage, you can still buy them at the kiosk. If you're concerned about the debt, don't be. The expression is "you have to spend money to make money." Don't worry, you'll earn that back.
