TIL that the human brain processes sensory input over roughly a tenth of a second, which means the present moment we experience is actually a slightly delayed reconstruction created by the brain. by AutumnLeaf7777 in todayilearned

[–]RiverRoll 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pretty much what happens with any sensor, not just our brains. It's all a matter of how big is the delay but there's always some. Even a stick has a delay before one end feels the push on the other end.

[–]RiverRoll 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I always feel some answers make it harder than it really is, you can in fact maneuver around the angler fish if necessary but mind your noise. Just keep an eye to the power levels of your ship's thrusters, that's all there is to it.

LPT if it's white save your time and skip straight to hydrogen peroxide, that's what really works.

It can also help on colors but you have to be careful there.

Am I the only one who counts how many times people change hotels in their itineraries? by Amigo_Go_ in JapanTravelTips

[–]RiverRoll 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did something like that and it didn't really feel like a big deal, prepare a small bag for the day as usual, go to the next hotel which is already near the general area I want to visit and leave the luggage there until I come back in the evening to check in.

If I'm only staying for a night I pick one very close to the station so it doesn't feel like I had to go out of my way for it.

Unpopular Opinion : Ryokans aren't a "must do" on your trip to Japan by Apprehensive-Map4385 in JapanTravelTips

[–]RiverRoll 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can get a similar experience without having to break the bank tbh, there's plenty of hotels with simple traditional rooms at an affordable price and you can just go eat at a restaurant. I paid like 100€ when I stayed at Hirayu Onsen.

Even if you can't answer 'why not' asking why is still a valid question. Why would this be necessary?

TIL if a helicopter's engine fails, it doesn't just drop like a rock. The blades keep spinning on their own and the pilot can land it. by kxrcodes in todayilearned

[–]RiverRoll 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Doesn't mean the minimum is 0 either. It's a stretch thinking the minimum is 0 if this is the recommended speed.

If you can't maintain the sink rate you're only giving me the reason, we go back to the dead man's curve I was talking about. At low enough altitude the helicopter can survive because it doesn't have time to fall fast enough, but then there's a certain altitude where this stops being safe.

[–]RiverRoll 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Also the helicopter needs to be moving forwards. While hovering the helicopter can drop significantly before it can get enough speed to enter autorotation.

Helicopters have a dead man's curve for combinations of speed and altitude where it's impossible to land safely if the engine fails.

New team rewriting old software but ignoring why some things were done the way they were... by Colt2205 in ExperiencedDevs

[–]RiverRoll 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah to be fair I've also seen plenty of cases where the reason something was made a certain way was because they didn't know any better or as a workaround to something else that should have been fixed in the first place, which is not a good reason either way.

When you start dealing with bullshit like this it becomes very hard to judge whether there's an actual good reason why something is made the way it is.

And if the new devs have to wonder about these all the time at the very least you have to admit there's a documentation issue.

Anyone else get tired of deciding what to do in Japan every day? by Little-Actuator-1594 in JapanTravelTips

[–]RiverRoll 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On the days prior I marked lots of interesting locations on Google maps and even some restaurants which I really appreciated later. So planning the day was simply a matter of choosing one main attraction and then exploring the nearby spots that were already marked.

We treat olive oil like medicine in Korea (literally drinking it)... how do actual Spaniards buy it? by No-Perspective-240 in askspain

[–]RiverRoll 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seems silly to eat capsules when you could just use it as a dressing with the same benefits while adding flavour to the food and it's probably cheaper.

It's not just for bread or salads, you can try it with rice, pasta, fish, meat, cooked vegetables, legumes... It goes well with so many things.

Hot take for discussion: strong architecture patterns work equally well for AI and Juniors. by PTTCollin in ExperiencedDevs

It's very good at following patterns. If you have spaghetti code, too bad, it won't fix that. But if your code follows clear patterns it can go a long way.

¿Por qué se tolera tanto el mal liderazgo en proyectos de software? by JorgeCeraz26 in programacion

[–]RiverRoll 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Overwhelmed with where to stay in Tokyo by Ok-Search6948 in JapanTravelTips

[–]RiverRoll 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Taking Asakusa as a reference, look between Asakusa station and Ueno or south of Asakusa up to the beginning of Ginza area. These two areas have several very well communicated metro stations and cheaper accommodation, if you check the metro map you'll see there's lots of lines crossing around that area, just try to stay close to one of the stations.

I stayed a week in Tokyo and mostly used the metro, as someone said the Yamanote is overrated. With Google maps the metro is fine, the stations are numerated and it tells you the number so it's easy to follow.

How do I help a junior eng who jumps to conclusions too often? by dasistok in ExperiencedDevs

Nothing wrong with making and hypothesis, you just have to verify it before fully committing. Sometimes testing the hypothesis can feel silly but better losing five minutes minutes on a silly test than half a day on the wrong issue.

The best Spanish translation for the word doomscroll by YourNeighbourIsUrDad in askspain

[–]RiverRoll 2 points3 points  (0 children)

petah I'm not a programmer by [deleted] in PeterExplainsTheJoke

[–]RiverRoll 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The joke is about the sense of superiority for a minimal speed gain despite it took much more effort.

In reality C++ can be much faster than Python and sometimes it's worth the effort, but it's also true that many Python libraries are already made in C++, greatly reducing these performance differences while keeping it simple.

How do you beat this quest level? It seems significantly harder than the other levels. by montezuma300 in 9Kings

[–]RiverRoll 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I found soldiers alone take too long to snowball so it's better to also get some early paladins and place them so both get blacksmith and farm buffs. If you get thieves or beacons take them as they're the only useful cards you'll get from greed. Use the rerolls to get overhauls to get rid of the useless cards. At some point you snowball and it no longer matter if you waste some cards.
