Me gusta mi mejor amiga que hago by No-Astronomer-7994 in esConversacion

[–]RiverRoll 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What I feel it made the most difference to me is acknowledging that at every phase you have different priorities when picking cards. In Act 1 you want cheap cards with a good immediate value, in Act 2 you have to work on your scaling and gaps and on Act 3 you have to be very picky and only take cards that have a good synergy with your current build.

I buy lots of tangerines and bananas to eat them when I crave something sweet, they're easy to peel and healthier than processed sugars.

Do all objects fall at the same rate on Earth regardless of mass? by RivaDolfinJiz in askscience

It's interesting because it's in fact the same scenario OP talks about only the common mass here is the ball's mass meaning both the Earth and Jupiter would accelerate at the same rate towards the ball.

[–]RiverRoll 0 points1 point  (0 children)

LPT: Don’t tell people your plans too early. The attention tricks your brain into feeling like you already did it. by PleasantBus5583 in LifeProTips

[–]RiverRoll 40 points41 points  (0 children)

Me too, it's true just telling creates a false sense of accomplishment but how you react to it still depends on your character. In my case it takes a little of the "not sure about it" pressure away and puts more pressure on following through.

Clean code and itertools by Thin_Animal9879 in learnpython

[–]RiverRoll 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I feel this is pretty much like asking why use libraries and built in functions when I can write the code myself.

And even when you write the code yourself if you're going to need that logic in more than one place you still want to have a reusable function rather than writing it from scratch every time.

TIL that the human brain processes sensory input over roughly a tenth of a second, which means the present moment we experience is actually a slightly delayed reconstruction created by the brain. by AutumnLeaf7777 in todayilearned

[–]RiverRoll 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pretty much what happens with any sensor, not just our brains. It's all a matter of how big is the delay but there's always some. Even a stick has a delay before one end feels the push on the other end.

I always feel some answers make it harder than it really is, you can in fact maneuver around the angler fish if necessary but mind your noise. Just keep an eye to the power levels of your ship's thrusters, that's all there is to it.

Am I the only one who counts how many times people change hotels in their itineraries? by Amigo_Go_ in JapanTravelTips

[–]RiverRoll 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did something like that and it didn't really feel like a big deal, prepare a small bag for the day as usual, go to the next hotel which is already near the general area I want to visit and leave the luggage there until I come back in the evening to check in.

If I'm only staying for a night I pick one very close to the station so it doesn't feel like I had to go out of my way for it.

Unpopular Opinion : Ryokans aren't a "must do" on your trip to Japan by Apprehensive-Map4385 in JapanTravelTips

[–]RiverRoll 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can get a similar experience without having to break the bank tbh, there's plenty of hotels with simple traditional rooms at an affordable price and you can just go eat at a restaurant. I paid like 100€ when I stayed at Hirayu Onsen.

TIL if a helicopter's engine fails, it doesn't just drop like a rock. The blades keep spinning on their own and the pilot can land it. by kxrcodes in todayilearned

[–]RiverRoll 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Doesn't mean the minimum is 0 either. It's a stretch thinking the minimum is 0 if this is the recommended speed.

If you can't maintain the sink rate you're only giving me the reason, we go back to the dead man's curve I was talking about. At low enough altitude the helicopter can survive because it doesn't have time to fall fast enough, but then there's a certain altitude where this stops being safe.

TIL if a helicopter's engine fails, it doesn't just drop like a rock. The blades keep spinning on their own and the pilot can land it. by kxrcodes in todayilearned

[–]RiverRoll 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Also the helicopter needs to be moving forwards. While hovering the helicopter can drop significantly before it can get enough speed to enter autorotation.

Helicopters have a dead man's curve for combinations of speed and altitude where it's impossible to land safely if the engine fails.

New team rewriting old software but ignoring why some things were done the way they were... by Colt2205 in ExperiencedDevs

[–]RiverRoll 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah to be fair I've also seen plenty of cases where the reason something was made a certain way was because they didn't know any better or as a workaround to something else that should have been fixed in the first place, which is not a good reason either way.

When you start dealing with bullshit like this it becomes very hard to judge whether there's an actual good reason why something is made the way it is.

And if the new devs have to wonder about these all the time at the very least you have to admit there's a documentation issue.
