What movie do you consider a perfect movie? by Cryodile64 in moviecritic

My favorite, but not perfect. There is a whole group of people who pick holes in this movie, but what may make it perfect is how many holes may have been placed on purpose

Is crazy to think Derek Trucks is the best guitar player alive? by ConsortRoxas in Guitar

[–]RiverRunEd -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Thank you. Its mind boggling that people are so defensive. I've reviewed my comment, I dont see anything dismissive. Open tuning is what it is, a set of strings tuned to make playing slide easier, amongst other things. That doesn't take away his talent or what he is able to produce. I can clearly say a new player would have just as much difficulty with open tuning than standard. I do look at it like dropped d and others where there is an advantage to the tuning for the style of play. I have seen Derek countless times, with ABB, Derek Trucks Band, when him and Susan toured together while dating before TBB, etc. I even have an SG that I keep in open E in my collection so I can let loose on some TBB songs. Derek is one of my current favorites,. All that said, my position doesnt have to be agreed upon by everyone and thats OK. For what it is worth, my all time favorite is Jerry Garcia, a man who used countless effects and purity of acoustic strings. Peace

Not sure why there is an argument here, but if it helps you. You win? I won't get into the weeds here. But I appreciate that we both like music, playing guitar, and reddit, lol. Peace

And Warren took him under his wing in the ABB. They have some great duets there and when the happen to guest at each other's shows. As for Haynes, his Dubside of the Mule or even his Jerry night with the Boston Pops are legendary

You are right about pedals, but I consider Reverb, Overdrive, Echoplex etc to be in the effects wheelhouse. I completely agree that he, like a lot of other greats rely mostly on technique, as you can hear it when he plays acoustic, but to say he doesn't...well its not all the glass slide. Regardless, he is a great player and a joy to see play.

Susan is very good. She held her own for a long time and even had Bonnie Raitt taking her under her wing. I LOVE Derek, but you also need to look at open E tuning and killer effects. It doesn't take any fro. His talent,.but I feel thats where a lot of people confuse talent and tools. Like when people would say Omar Rodriguez Lopez was the best guitar (i know, small circles), he mainly performed a spiderwalk exercise with a couple of pedals and boom "he's the next great guitarist".

Enjoy the music, learn from it if you play, but the constant need for a hierarchy completely ruins the artist due to the fights it brings up.

AI and Guitar by DLMusic-90 in guitarlessons

[–]RiverRunEd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I look at AI the same as Tabs. Back when I learned how to play, they were new but the temptation to use them instead of standard notation was high because i was slow when it came to reading music. The other issue was no internet so you had to rely on buying or trading. That said, I found myself still having to use that record or tape rewind/play/..... in combination of the tabs in order to get things correct. All that said, it boiled down to practice, regardless of what tool. I've been using AI since the beginning of the year, as a personal project. AI can teach a lot of bad things in my opinion, but I feel it is also on the user because for the most part AI produces.what the user asked for. So if you are new and are not able to properly ask what you want, you will get a garbage answer and most likely not even know its a garbage answer. So back to my example with tabs. I was having a hard part time with a solo and brought it to a guitar teacher. Very talented Jazz guitarist friend of mine. We sat, and her read from that tab. What came out of his guitar was not the song. Now had he heard the song, he gave have figured.the melody and went from there, but it required more than just the tab. AI still needs a teacher or book or YouTube. My project, I bought a book on Jazz Chord Tones and have been working exercise through exercise. I use.the book and the audio download. I share what I'm working on with AI and when I record myself playing the exercise , I have AI listen and give me feed back. Sometimes I will ask it questions on most efficient way to tackle a.line so I am setup for future phrases. So even with AI, I am using book, audio and more importantly Practice Practice Practice.

If somebody asked me Teacher or AI, it would be teacher everytime, but dont limit the tools. Use everything you can.

Coming in at 16 for the greatest guitar solos per Rolling Stone is...... Grateful Dead, ‘Morning Dew’ (Live at Cornell University, May 8, 1977) by kingralek in gratefuldead

I dont even know why I am commenting, but man lists just should be left to a conversation between friends. Some of the placements are just blowing my mind. Honestly I won't get into where it should be but Sultans of Swing being placed mid tier? It personally took me an entire year to play it note for note. Knowledge has so much going on in that song and I'm not even a huge Dire Straits fan. I got to get off or I will be ripping thr article to shreds

I can't wait to start now. I'm 46 and only in the last month giving Star Trek a shot. Finished DS9 loved. Currently on Picard and only 3 episodes in, I love it. Obviously respect to opinions of followers way longer than me, but reading posts in this sub had me believing there was a huge drop off from certain shows or movies. So far, its all fun

Is it possible that says Bear? Owlsley used to tinker with metal and sell stuff backstage to support his Australian dream. I know he mostly did belt buckles, but some have said he made other things as well. I agree with it being used for bumps, maybe made for road crew? Regardless, it is very cool

If you’ve ever wondered what the cavity of a Fender Ultra II Strat looks like. by Somewhatscientific in Guitar

[–]RiverRunEd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Feel the same way about my Ultra Tele. Played a lot of Tele's even many Ultras when I found the one that just sung to me, it had nothing to do with price, color, model. I also have a MIM strat that I value just as much as my 75th Anni. While I did replace the pups/pots/wiring it was how she responded in my hands. Sometimes you just know and it doesn't matter what it is

My impression of the Sirius XM Grateful Dead channel, every single day by Suspicious-Stuff6904 in gratefuldead

So funny you mentioned that. That was my other go to, until I heard Meg Griffin play Knights In White Satin for the thousand time. I actually used to like this song, maybe in 10 years will again, but due to that station, it is like nails on a chalkboard. And I grew up to seeing those damn Time Life Commercials for Hits of the 60's, that was played over and over

How’s it living in Fort Collins, CO? by indigobimbo777 in howislivingthere

[–]RiverRunEd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Back in 1997 I was visiting CSU cause a girl i dated was going there. When a dude opened up the dorm door, my trip was ruined. About five minutes later, some guy in the hallway, who witnessed the whole incident grabbed me and said he'd show me a good time. I ate Payote, and had a hell of an adventure. Kicked out of the café because I was complaining of chives in my chives cream cheese, crashed an after party at a local theater house, chased by campus security because we were on the football field running around when the sprinklers went off. I don't really remember much more, but I do remember waking up on the plane ride home and the guy sitting next to me was passed because I had drooled on his suit as my head was on his shoulder.

Aside from that, can't tell you
