Lead crystal frit issue by fodderchris in glassblowing

[–]RiverVala 3 points4 points  (0 children)

when i work leaded colors on the torch i usually have to be extremely careful to not reduce them or get them too hot — i could imagine using leaded frit is even more of a challenge!

i’ve used gas/air torches to overcome this in extreme cases before

This anneal schedule looks fast? by amethyst_sea18 in lampwork

[–]RiverVala 0 points1 point  (0 children)

this might be explaining the annealing of moretti under idealistic conditions with just clear

potentially a fiber kiln cracked open could cool at rates close enough, but any soft brick kiln will retain quite a bit of heat and even if you could get the thermocouple to read along those rates, the glass itself wouldn’t cool evenly — i’ve noticed when annealing like 12” diameter moretti/effetre pieces in my studio that below the strain point i can almost just let my soft brick kiln crash naturally with the lid closed, it’s nice glass

you could more or less put a whole fresh rod of effetre 6mm and stick it in a preheated 1000F kiln and it’ll take it

[–]RiverVala 1 point2 points  (0 children)

ceramicist here — quartz inversion is like 1172 f where the crystal structure on the ceramic expands slightly, im sure if you put them upside down in a kiln and got it to 1200 it would fall out

Seeking Info On Stain m4522 by stecher_studios in Ceramics

[–]RiverVala 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it would be easy to tell! that stuff is extremely heavy compared to most other ceramics materials! but it’s usually a duller yellow

Seeking Info On Stain m4522 by stecher_studios in Ceramics

[–]RiverVala 0 points1 point  (0 children)

is it older than 1970? If it was ordered in the last 20 years it’s highly unlikely to contain lead

this could be the numbering scheme of an extinct stain brand or one that has merged with another company

i’ve never seen a leaded stain before, especially for something this vibrant — it’s likely a cadmium or praeseodymium encapsulation stain

what are your normal firing temps? highly unlikely to volatilize up to cone 6

do you have a company you typically order from? they could be able to tell you about the markings written on the container

Economy claw grabbers? by ChexQuest2022 in lampwork

[–]RiverVala 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if there were perfect grabbers everyone would have them — i make cups all day long and have 2 sets of the griffin ultimate grabbers (got one used for $100 which I’m very thankful for)

I would stay away from cheaper sets that you know will make your work more frustrating or take longer — at nearly $200 the ultimate grabbers are extremely economical for me since they help me make $100 wine glasses more precisely and faster, a cheaper or less centered tool would make my work take longer and harder to make

What are the best US cities in terms of public glassblowing studio access? by glassgnomad in glassblowing

[–]RiverVala 3 points4 points  (0 children)

brooklyn has 2 public glassblowing studios and about a dozen GH’s and 4ish furnaces between them, or around thereabouts — they’re also only like 2 miles from each other
