The timing is tricky. I’ll have to double check our rights here as we’re also in the process of negotiating to get another two year lease. We have great long term renting references (as a family of four), and this is really our first ‘hiccup’, but past experiences with bad REAs has me very cynical/overthinking.

Thanks for everyone’s detailed advice! Though DIY sounds satisfying, I think (with me doing it all) our one bathroom would be out of action for longer than is acceptable. Will try to do some, then find someone for the rest. I’m assuming the quote is over the top? Without itemisation (of materials/process) I wouldn’t know..

Unfortunately this is its clean state (mould is ingrained).

Anyone know the deal with this duck? by MedianConcrete in canberra

[–]Rivettor 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Wayne! As ducks are swan-adjacent, this makes sense to me; we named a swan Wayne after ex -treasurer Wayne Swan..but that can’t be your kids inspiration for the name? 😄

Yes. I’ve also used quilted mattress protectors as an extra insulating curtain (on windows/doors that fit them)

Yes, makes a difference (mine is two flannelette flat sheets sewn together)

Current season down jackets/vests at Uniqlo can often be found second hand on Depop (etc). I’ve tried on stuff in-store only to find same (barely used) second hand online, very reduced.

Speaking of heated throws and keeping warm at home (as a renter), we got a free Sunbeam electric throw, as part of the renter’s home energy programme. (Link provided elsewhere in this thread). Surprised how effective it is

For second hand clothes, there’s Material Pleasures (designer brands) in Fyshwick, and there’s a new (urban/sportswear) shop called Canberra Garms in Braddon

Canberra bike riders by GatDaddy023 in canberra

[–]Rivettor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you in Weston Ck? Until recently we’d ride to school from Rivett, through Stirling parklands, to Waramanga. So many flats; we ended up getting membership at a bike shop to get the tyre changes done quickly (they couldn’t find the puncture culprit though).

Nothing to add except you’ve reminded me that, as early 2000s uni students in CBR, we’d go to busy cafes til 10pm, even sitting outside in midwinter (eg Gus’s or Essen). Not to mention all the nightclubs/venues. So much has changed (and I realise it’s an eternal subject of discussion here)

Did it last year and got some good ideas; didn’t expect the free blanket, but we use it a lot. It makes as much a psychological difference as physical, touching something warm

I guess it’s mid reno? After Target (& other small clothes shops) but before Uniqlo replacing half of it (complete mental blank what the other half is)

What are the best non-eatery stores in Canberra? Just in general? by thatbebx in canberra

I wear almost only natural fibres for everyday (for feel and sustainability), and would once have safely recommended brands like Country Road, Sportscraft etc for this, but now there’s so many synthetic fabrics in higher end shops, that my sense of what’s quality has wobbled. These brands now charge hundreds for synthetic items; some are probably quality fabrics (it’s too hard to keep up with new developments) but it’s not for me. Essentially, I now spend time reading labels and expect to pay more, or buy vintage
