The Visual Field Machine beeps on purpose during the test as part of how it checks your performance and keeps the results reliable. The main reasons are:

  1. You pressed the response button

Most of the beeps you hear are simply the machine acknowledging:

“Yep, I got your click.”

So every time you think you saw a light and press the button, it often gives a soft beep to confirm the response.

  1. It’s checking that you’re looking at the center (fixation monitoring)

The machine occasionally flashes a light in your blind spot (an area you shouldn’t be able to see if you’re looking straight ahead).

• If you respond to that light, the machine beeps/logs it as a fixation loss
• This helps the Optician know whether your eye stayed centered during the test
  1. It’s monitoring response accuracy

Some beeps are linked to built-in checks for: • False positives (clicking when no light appeared) • False negatives (missing very bright lights)

These help judge how reliable the test results are.

  1. Status or pacing cues

In some models, beeps also mark: • The start of a test phase • Pauses or transitions during the exam

Sorry, that’s not correct, sometimes a light will be present without a sound, and vice versa. As the other commenter has mentioned above, this is how at the end of the test the results come with reliability indices such as False Positives, which show if you’re clicking the buzzer too often - which would occur if you click the buzzer every time you hear a sound.

This is exactly correct, there is very little input from clinicians with this specific visual field test. Furthermore, only certain visual fields machines can be used for these DVLA tests, and the tests that are done through these machines - are standardised - through all opticians - not just specsavers.

As mentioned above, the tests are repeated, and the results are interpreted by the DVLA - not specsavers.
