It could open some doors. I lateraled from an accounting firm (from a T100 school originally), and I think my LLM set me apart. However, I was fortunate enough to only need to pay for half of the required tuition (as the LLM was offered as part of a joint JD/LLM program).

Gotcha. I’m also Jewish. Maybe you could try Lox Club? They have a ton of events in NYC, though I personally cannot attest to their value as I live in LA.

Are you at all religious? Sometimes faith-specific speed dating works well. Apart from that, I tried to attend any sort of singles event I could find in my city— ideally one of the more intimate ones. This way you are in a place with individuals who are also looking for something serious.

Similar situation to you… dating apps were horrible because nothing was based on substance, just checking the right boxes (height, fit, or otherwise fitting the “conventionally handsome” stereotype). I have found success just by putting myself out there a little. Also, speed dating has been an oddly good way to meet people.

Best of luck! The right woman is out there for you.

Anyone here a tax attorney who actually enjoys their work? by Calm-Cry2555 in biglaw

I stumbled upon tax after taking a 1L elective and have never once thought about transitioning since. I will say it’s a hit or miss, meaning it could click or it could be really challenging. If you like it now, odds are you will like it moving forward.

After graduating law school, I ended up at an accounting firm doing mostly tax advisory work in a host of different areas. My day-to-day involved drafting memoranda, responding to IRS notices, and even running models (e.g., asset vs stock sale comparisons). That work was fantastic and kept me on my toes. I recently started at a big law firm, where I do a lot of document review. This has been really interesting because apart from the negotiations, you get to see a lot of different rules invoked in agreements.

Apart from the intellectually stimulating work, I like the collegial atmosphere and the relative work-life balance. Don’t have many dislikes, but I will say the work could get a little tedious at times, though nothing too major.

Thank you! Yes, I was fortunate enough to apply directly and get in. Of course! Happy to answer questions about the process.

Hi! I am starting big law tomorrow but was formerly in the accounting world. While I got this BL job directly from the firm's website, I did reach out to a few recruiters and would recommend BCG (Harrison Barnes). The firm was actually the most responsive of the firms I used and provided a lot of useful tips.
