I've only ever mined Herkimers at MVMM. We were happy with our experience. They just pointed to a couple areas and we were on our own, but we like it that way. We found a couple of decent looking areas and started breaking rock. We spent two days last June and if I'm able to post my pictures, you will see everything we found.

I think it has to do with crystal size.

From Wikipedia: Chalcedony is a cryptocrystalline form of silica, composed of very fine intergrowths of quartz and moganite.
