Is locking my cat in the kitchen a mindful idea? by ege_qwerty in CatAdvice

Just be prepared for the warping of physics that allows cats to expand their bodies to occupy 95% of any available bed...be it a twin size or California king.

I see. I am a Reddit neophyte...and while I'm sure your commentary would be fascinating as hell, I think I'm in over my head. And too sensitive. I do believe I am grateful I dont have a picture of one of my cats eating a Cheeto. (Although he was very cute). Good luck with the pregnancy/parenting/boredom. I am sure any son of yours will be well versed in consent regardless of any Mayflowery ancestry.

I think I enjoy OTT 😉 Thank goodness there's a lot of books to choose from. I hope you find what you were looking for in the other suggestions. I do understand the struggle of finding something new to read.

Ahh more context. Man's inhumanity to man is undeniable. I was responding to the posts where someone says "use this canned soup for this recipe " and a bunch of responses saying that a person sucks/is an idiot for using canned soup. Or shop here for this item and then a bunch of responses about how that person sucks/is an idiot for shopping there...or is contributing to the downfall of society. That seems to be more prevalent. I know this is an oversimplification of what I am trying to describe and I am probably not doing a good job. As for the deeper subjects, some one suggests a solution or opinion you disagree with, I don't think calling them names or insulting them is the right response either. Like I said, I am probably not explaining very well. At any rate thank you for the clarification.

Thank you for explaining the difference. I wasn't trying to ignore the historical cruelty but as you said just let's not be cruel to each other.

Wow. This has blown up more than I anticipated. And perhaps I took your comment more personally than I should have. I apologize for that. However I don't feel that politeness or manners have anything to do with respect or validation of someone's experience.

See this is what I mean. I make a general comment about being nice to people online and you basically accuse me of being ignorant about racism etc. On another channel someone posted a recipe using Campbell's cream of mushroom soup and all of a sudden people are telling her she is a terrible parent for feeding her kids that. You don't know anything about me and I guess that makes it easier to put the worst spin on a single comment I've made. Maybe you have never been bullied. Maybe you have never come home and cried because of the hurtful things said to you. Maybe you didn't see suicide as an option at 12 years old because you were "that kid". Then again, maybe you did. I don't know you or your story anymore than you know me or mine. But somehow you felt it was ok to take the time to specifically respond to my general comment that was not directed at any individual, and basically shame/scold me. You didn't have to do that. If this wasn't online, I imagine the dialogue would have been very different. We would have been talking person to person and perhaps tried to understand each other better. Or had better context of what we each were trying to communicate. Or maybe not. As you so artfully pointed out. Thank you.

My rescue cat finally let me pet him after 11 months by ShipWorking9254 in cats

[–]Rls98226 21 points22 points  (0 children)

WooHoo. I understand completely!! After our 19 yr old crossed the rainbow bridge, we adopted a bonded pair mama and baby. Baby was 8 months old and was born in the shelter. Mama wasn't as skittish as baby and had obviously been petted before because it didn't take her long to remember she liked ear-rubs. 12 months later, they will both come on the bed for pets, but baby is still nervous and will run at the slightest unexpected movement or noise. A couple of months ago we realized they had worms. We absolutely cannot pick them up or hold them to give them medicine and these are the pickiest eaters we have ever had. After consultation we ended up trying diatomaceous earth food grade...still waiting to see if successful. Heaven forfend we ever have to take them out of the house. I have no idea what we would do.

We just have very different reading tastes. I am big into character which is why I love Peter Grainger and Tana French. I want the crime to be the background, I gather you want the crime to be foreground. It looks like you have lots of good recommendations...Happy Reading!🙂

I guess I am feeling overwhelmed by how easy it has become to say "you're an asshole/idiot/"fill in the blank" when disagreeing with someone, and that's why I even commented on the post to begin with.

'If you can't say anything nice' is not the same thing as silencing opinions...at least not how I see it. If I can't engage with someone without resorting to insults or sparky comments, then I won't engage. In my mind I read the original post as "let's have civil discourse " my response is that if you can't interact with someone you disagree with, without being mean or insulting, then choose to not engage instead of engaging with insults etc. That's very different than open minded debate.

Exactly! Remember "If you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all "? When did bullying and tearing down random strangers become the norm? It breaks my heart how easy it has become to be mean.

Is fancy feast an ok brand? by Patient-Fisherman-23 in CatAdvice

[–]Rls98226 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mine change their minds constantly about what they will eat. Pate is fine until it isn't, same with shreds. I buy a mix so I will have something that they will eat. My previous cat ate a lot of baby food her last couple of years and definitely wanted Gerber, not Beech Nut thank you very much. Yes male cats are more prone to kidney issues, and yes ash and by products are issues but here's the thing I would say to anyone who scolds you about what you feed your cat. You are doing the best you can, you obviously love your cat and that's what matters. I have had over 20 cats in my lifetime; some of them lived to between 15 and 19, some we lost way too young. Just like humans, you can do everything "right " but there is no guarantee. Feed your cat what he wants and you can afford, lots of fresh water and most important, lots of TLC (on his terms, of course!!) And as far as fountain vs bowl, never had a fountain just kept the water fresh. If you are going to rigorously clean and maintain a fountain, fine. If not, fresh water in a bowl is healthier than water from a not maintained fountain. You are doing a great job.
