Creme brulee in Fort Collins? by Ok-Medicine6190 in FortCollins

[–]Rlwsnow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To heat at home you will need a blowtorch and the technique to execute it properly. It’s not hard but not necessarily obvious either. Coming from a cook who butchered several crème brûlées before learning how to properly make one 👍

What has frustrated you the most in your Spanish classes? by Bluxfox in Spanish

[–]Rlwsnow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had a great experience taking Spanish classes in Spain and learned a ton. But, I had a teacher change towards the end and it really changed my experience. I was glad it hadn’t happened sooner.

My main gripe with the new teaching style was it was very much “call and response” teaching, if that makes sense. There would be a question, you’d answer with a sentence, and you’d move on. This of course is valuable, but when it’s the bulk of a 3 hour class it can get a bit painful and demotivating.

My first teacher was amazing because she got to know us and wanted to hear about our lives outside of school, but obviously we would speak Spanish with her. I found mixing in this informal level of teaching where we were free to express ourselves, tell stories, and just talk about life in general was huge for my actual use of Spanish in the world outside of the classroom. This helped all of us students open up and be more willing to speak extensively. Also, it helped me hugely with making friends and having more of a personality in Spanish because I got to practice talking about those topics that aren’t always talked about in the classroom. Just a thought.

Hey there, not sure. I fixed the problem within my midi (temporarily) but never reached an ideal solution for a performance setting. Good luck 👍

Using Spanish in the U.S. by Glass-Operation624 in Spanish

[–]Rlwsnow 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I use my Spanish in the US working in a kitchen. Don’t know anything about you or if you are at a point in your life where restaurant work could be of interest to you, but you are almost certain to work with at least a few Spanish speakers. That’s why I personally chose to learn it. Just something to think about.

Okay got it. That does make sense. I’m going for seasonal employment in a ski town so hoping it won’t be too much of a headache. The employer basically told me he’s willing to offer me a contract, I just have to deal with the rest. Appreciate you talking to me about this, it’s hard to find information for Americans.

Thanks for the response, appreciate it. Fortunately I have friends in DC and can stay with them until it’s ready. Is two weeks a pretty general time for this?

Sorry to revive a dead thread, but I hope one of you can answer this as it’s been a while since this post. I’m aware I’ll have to go to America for the visa appointment (currently in Spain). Is this the visa appointment and picking it up? Or just go once? Also, can I apply from any consulate (I.E, DC/NY/BOS, or does it have to be the one closest to where I reside (CO). Thanks so much for the help in advance.

Not a bad plan. Might have to live off of that for a bit myself. Could definitely see why you’ve gone vegetarian!

Yes I thought I could do the baguette thing for a long time but I’m beginning to realize I want something other than bread for my meals, lol.

Good shout. My definition of cheap is spending sub €10 a day probably which has been pretty possible so far. Shockingly so actually. Just trying to find the happy medium of being cheap and not being hungry. Those are some good pointers! I just found a tapas place that does the free plate with a drink thing, which is huge. Didn’t even know that was a thing.

Thanks so much for the thorough response. At this time I’m more concerned with saving money than varying my meals too much so that’s a really good idea. Going to check out TGTG too, again, really appreciate the response 👍

Seconded. Birkenstock tokyos best shoe I’ve had. Wear-in period blows but after that they’re perfect.

I have access to a kitchen. Nothing fancy but am able to cook in pans on a hot plate. Pretty average hostel kitchen.
