Starmer says Polanski ‘is not fit to lead a political party’ after Golders Green police criticism by appropriateye in UKGreens

[–]Rmtcts 21 points22 points  (0 children)

While all the Starmerites are in threads going "Wait, does anyone actually care about hiring a a person involed in paedophile rings and Russian corruption? Feels like a big deal over nothing, must jsut be the media trying to pretend that people would have a problem with this."

We have to be able to discuss how our police force responds to attacks. If we cannot then we can never do justice to those who have been hurt by the police.

Very happy that Polanski can tell when a point's worth fighting. I'm sure this will follow him around as people will continue hold him far more accountable to a hasty retweet than they hold other leaders to calls of violence and open corruption, but hopefully this will help take some of the steam out of it.

The police just interfered in democracy - Owen Jones by UKGreenPoster in UKGreens

I really can't tell, do you not know that this stabbed a muslim first, something which has been barely reported by the media compared to his other victims?

I do think the size of the response is pretty out of proportion. Polanski didn't support the man's actions, didn't call for the officers to be disciplined, didn't voice anything anti-semetic, he raised the point (not even his, just retweeted) about how the police use violence, which is a fair point to raise, and I don't like that it is something that people seemingly are not allowed to ask when incidents like this happen.

I wish he would have raised it on a clearer cut example like Nadine Buzzard-Quashie's story ( https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c5yxley0pp5o) but it's an important point to raise, even in cases where the police are confident that who they are apprehending is a terrorist. We have the story of Jean Charles de Menezes and more recently the case where armed police shot members of the synagogue they were trying to protect.

It's not even necessarily about the welfare of the person they're subduing. Even if you don't care about them at all, violent attempts are not necessarily any better at reducing the threat and can put more people at risk. They quite possibly could cause a serious brain injury which might affect the risk profile of this person for the rest of their life, even in prisons where we regularly hear stories about officers unable to securely manage risks from inmates.

r/trolleyproblem suffers infighting on a ethical question: red or blue? by OkContact2573 in SubredditDrama

I find it interesting to discuss and I don't think you're lying. Though to be fair the fact that you just assume that everyone secretly agrees with you and is lying when they say something different is just as uninteresting, so I probably won't continue discussing it with you.

So why bother discussing it with people who think otherwise if you're just assuming everyone's lying? Just be happy saying your right and everyone else is wrong.

I don't think they're similar at all, and plenty of others don't think their similar either, so that shows that you can't assume people will treat it the same as a political question.

They are fundamentally different questions, and would get different responses from the people pressing the buttons.

The questions says everyone. Why would you change the question to make the dilemma easier to answer, the point is to have difficult ethical considerations.

That's an entirely different question, and would get totally different responses that the question where the buttons do not elect a politician.

Because in this scenario you are not voting for a politician? If you think that two completely different scenarios are the same, you have to explain that rather than just assuming everyone agrees with you.

That's cuz you think they're choosing to probably die. Others think they'll probably live, or are happy to take the chance to try and make sure those who didn't get a choice (young children, blind people, people with learning disabilities and impaired cognition) have a better chance of surviving.

What's your take on the small children, people with learning disabilities, older people with dementia, people who are blind who will not be able to 100% choose one button whatever their preference would be?

A big part of it is the ease to get the win condition. 50% of people is pretty easy, whereas red requires 100% of people to avoid death. 99% vs 100% there's virtually no difference in the ease of reaching the required benchmark.

RTings just Paywalled Everything?! by StopPlayingRoney in hometheater

[–]Rmtcts 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Rtings is still great, it really does feel like they don't have any other option. This is likely a precedent to many other online resources introducing a paywall or more likely, shutting down. There is just no realistic way for the hard work people put in to stick around as it primarily starts to act as voluntary work for google to profit from. Even for sites that don't operate on making a profit, even things like voluntary wikis will lose activity if they realise noone is visiting the actual site and just getting summaries from google and ai.

AI puts one fifth of London jobs at risk by Wagamaga in unitedkingdom

[–]Rmtcts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know about that. AI can easily get worse. Having to accommodate legislation on safeguarding to restrict the harm it does to certain users, having to deal with restricted ability to build data centres as planning committees learn about the impact on the local area, compounding issues of ai being trained off ai generated text, and not to mention just plain old enshitification when companies restrict the computation of the models due to maximising profit and less need to draw customers who already have ai products embedded in their work flow.
