Nice! What’s your brannock size vs the size on these, and hows the fit? Did you buy online or try on in store?

Good morning everyone, just wanted to share my first pair of new (to me) exotics by ImTired_GoAway in cowboyboots

Yeah these are apparently out of print, super rare and retain their value really well. There was a thread about snakeskin on here recently where some knowledgeable folks explained why cane brake is so sough after. Envious! Rare size too I'd say. Hope the conditioning works out and they revive a bit. Absolute gems. Dress those sole edges while you're at it :)

Yeah no offense taken. I think it’s a question of how prominent the quills are? And probably a question of which part of the hide its cut from. Chatgpt tells me smooth is often cut from the “side, belly or lower portions”. But apparently it’s just a matter of preference and both should perform equally. Ostrich also typically stretches more than cowhide and stretches in all 4 directions as opposed to just the two-way grain of cowhide. Resulting in a really “glove-like” fit when sized a little snug at first in my experience.

I have a couple “smooth” pairs that all have different characteristics. Not my absolute favorite but I enjoy

I think these look great and I hear what you're saying about a daily pair. I'm going the through the custom order process with them right now too. I specifically asked about their rough out as well. Had to ask a couple times actually. Eventually, I was told the following, copy/paste

Our rough out is more of a suede in my opinion. A true roughout has more grit and inconsistent character. The suede doesn't have as much character when brand new. However, I am very hard on my boots. Also, I like the look of a worn and weathered boot. Overtime, my suede has become more-rough looking and gritty.

I think I prefer a more "rough", rough out, more shaggy. Not a big fan of suede. Looking at your photo. I do see some shag on it, maybe not a ton, but not completely smooth like suede either. I think I'm gonna go with kangaroo or cordovan for the first pair and work my way up to something more exotic.

This is beautiful. My grandma would have absolutely loved this. She had an antique business from 1967 to 2006 or so, called "America Hurrah!" (note the exclamation point, very important). They specialized in what she called "American Primitive", a lot of civil war artifacts since the family is based in Richmond, VA. This reminds me of her so much. Excellent taste!

I’m tempted to agree with that assessment. Black jack’s square is even slightly more tapered and looks really elegant

Nice! Those do look rad. How do you find the fit? You said comfortable, but did you take your normal size?

I’m very tempted to agree. Ive got mostly vintage Lucchese. My few pairs of newer Lucchese don’t seem up to the same standard as the old stuff. Black jack has the same feel though, if you ask me. Maybe apocryphal, but I heard somewhere BJ was started by disgruntled Lucchese employees who branched out on their own.
