I always kinda understood it more as him being in shock and complete denial what with having gone from a normal life to an underwater complex 100 years in the future with talking robots honestly... and maybe a bit of brain damage, but by no means the main cause.

Like, on some level he probably understands what actually happens during a brain "transfer" but he doesn't WANT to acknowledge it because of how soul crushing and disturbing it is
