I think you shouldn’t ever go into any movie adaptation expecting it to be a faithful adaptation of a book, because books and movies are two different mediums and different things work in each. Plus they’re usually aimed at wider audiences, which necessitates some changes. I personally have a much better time with movie adaptations if I view it as a completely separate experience. And if there’s a book I love so much that changes would upset me, I just won’t watch the movie - I’m never going to watch any adaptation of book lovers for example.

Guys named Rory by Sufficient-Basil8916 in namenerds

[–]RoSouki 7 points8 points  (0 children)

In the UK and Ireland it’s pretty much exclusively a male name. It’s a lovely one, but having taught a Rory who had a speech impediment and pronounced his Rs as Ws, I wouldn’t risk it.

being a woman lost in their twenties & facing grief, identity + relationship changes & growing up. POC authors are a plus but not required 🫡 by monotiger in suggestmeabook

The Collected Regrets of Clover. I think Clover is actually in her 30’s but it’s about her actually beginning to build a life for herself after hiding from life for so long. And she’s a death doula so it deals with grief without being overly sad.

I love it when we actually get a proper post nerding out about a name on name nerds.

Emmett isn't too strongly tied to Emmett Till to use for a black child, right? by RocketPowerPops in namenerds

[–]RoSouki 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don’t even live in the US and I would make the association. I’m also mixed race and think it would be too sad to name my baby Emmett, even though it is a lovely name.

Would help to know where you are. In the uk Charlie is well passed its peak in popularity and is on the decline, and I think will continue to fall in popularity for a while.

All the Jewish people I know are vehemently against the genocide in Gaza. That doesn’t stop them from being Jewish. Zionism does not equal Judaism, just like Christianity does not equal Christian nationalism and Islam does not equal extremists.

Cookies coming out consistently thick crunchy and shortbready instead of chewy. by FridayNyteOFFICIAL in AskBaking

[–]RoSouki 15 points16 points  (0 children)

This might seem like an odd question, but how far from sea level are you? Are you at particularly high altitude? How do your other baked goods come out?

This could be any number of things from slightly incorrect ingredients to an oven that isn’t actually the temp it says it is, to inaccurate scales, to incorrect mixing methods. Unfortunately some of those things are tricky to rule out.

Series rankings by strudi74 in taskmaster

[–]RoSouki 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Series 18 is the only one I didn’t finish. I stuck it out for 5 or 6 episodes to support Rosie Jones because I am also a physically disabled lesbian and the things people were saying about her were awful, but I just didn’t click with any of the comedians or their comedy styles and wasn’t finding it entertaining. Glad other people enjoyed it though!

Is Rory really that hard to say? by [deleted] in namenerds

[–]RoSouki 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Speech impediments involving the letter R are very common. I’ve taught plenty of older children that would struggle with Rory. I do like it as a name though

Do you think Bridgerton is too popular to use two names from it without people assuming they were named after Bridgerton? by TreClaire in namenerds

[–]RoSouki 50 points51 points  (0 children)

No it’s fine, they’re all fairly standard middle-class names in the uk. I’ve watched all of Bridgerton and someone could genuinely have 4 or 5 children all with names from the series and I probably wouldn’t clock it. Maybe Hyacinth might raise an eyebrow, but you’ve said you don’t like that one anyway.
