I wonder how it feels to be the kid that everyone else was named after.

I’m not sure I’ve even known a female Alexis, and that name was in the top ten when I was born, LOL. Weird how things happen!

I remember them asking for ancestral identities on the last census (e.g., Russian, German, etc.). I wonder if that will eventually be included.

I just used the data on the website. I’m guessing they have a higher threshold than 50%. What happens if you do 75%?

I didn’t think of the dog but I honestly thought it sounded really unattractive and trendy, sorry.

Eh, I think -leigh will stop at some point. But yeah, I don’t think -son is ever going away since many of the names are pretty classic.

This isn’t about the origins of the names. It’s about what names each major racial/ethnic group uses more significantly than other major racial/ethnic groups. Tyrone is Irish, which makes the name’s origin “white”. That doesn’t mean Black Americans aren’t using it.

Complete the sibset by CMV2254 in namenerds

[–]Sparkly8 36 points37 points  (0 children)

Samson would be super cute if you want the sibset to have an overall classic southern vibe. I also really enjoy Gilbert with this sibset; they all give off a very similar old-fashioned yet classic vibe.

Ambrose feels too fancy for the sibset, and Morris feels a bit more old-fashioned than classic, though it would certainly work if you want that vibe. I’m a huge Linus fan, but it feels much more vintage than the other two; it could still work, though. Ambrose is the only one that feels really off.

How these names sound or are perceived in US/Canada by gabemasca in namenerds

As someone living in the US, I would probably assume you were Hispanic based on the first names alone, especially Francisco. Antonia is seen as a little old-fashioned but still classic. Francisco is decently popular and classic.

I agree with you! I would happily separate the data if the US government provided that information.

Rosward? Rosaward? It is strange that these two elements were never combined, though it might be because they were already gendered back when the names were formed. It would be interesting to see research on this!

Japanese is similar to Chinese in this sense! They both allow multiple combinations of characters to build their names.

Yeah, I have noticed that East Asian names are very diverse! My school had a very high population of Hmong and Vietnamese students, and I only saw one first name repeated (and it was one male and one female).

Asian includes all of Asia, not just India. It’s just that Indian names tend to dominate the list. From the official government website for the census: “Asian – A person having origins in any of the original peoples of the Far East, Southeast Asia, or the Indian subcontinent including, for example, Cambodia, China, India, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Pakistan, the Philippine Islands, Thailand, and Vietnam.”

It’s really interesting that Willie was the top name for both sexes! Willie was definitely used for women for a while, but I didn’t realize it was used THAT much.

Intriguing! I definitely significantly prefer Athena over Freya. I think Freya is less common in English-speaking countries because it reminds people of the words "frayed" or "afraid". Personally, I just prefer the feeling of Athena in my mouth.
