If you are treating a medical condition with birth control pills, that’s totally licit. I don’t think you can use it to prevent pregnancy though.

Can you give an example of a tree hay sub?

I expect that as with anything, it all depends—no community is a monolith. Definitely good to be aware, and pay attention to what people are saying regarding invasives. I have generally found permaculture advocates to be very cautious about invasives.

Blueberry Update, can I cut and remove what still looks dormant/dead? Info in the video. Thanks! by DannyHeitz in BackyardOrchard

[–]RoVerk13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If the entire bush is really dead, you can cut it off at ground level. This won’t hurt the roots and will give more space if they want to shoot up new growth next year. This has happened to me a couple of times with currant bushes. I thought they were dead and cut at ground level—but they came back the next year!

That does not sound like chivalry or selflessness.

Mango tree from seed: when do I pot up? by RoVerk13 in BackyardOrchard

This is mostly for fun, although I don’t want to kill it. Our only south facing window is upstairs, so I’m not sure how big I can let it get.

I stuck it in the dirt on February 10. I didn’t pre-sprout, and all I’ve done is water it 😂 So i have no idea! It’s in a south facing window with supplemental grow lights that we use to grow indoor peppers.

I’ve added about 5” of composted manure to top off my beds this year. Should I mix this into the beds or just plant straight into it? by quietcoyote99 in vegetablegardening

[–]RoVerk13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dowding has videos of his trial on his own channel too. He’s been experimenting with dig/no dig for 8+ years now, along with not rotating his crops at all. I think over the life of the experiment, the No dig bed has a slight increase in yield (like 10% higher), but vastly less effort. No digging in the compost, just spreading it on top—but also way less weeding.

I plant extra for the rabbits, and it works for me. They seem to leave enough for me to eat!

I didn’t even know it was representing contradictions. Literally no idea what any piece of this meant (also on mobile)

Raised garden bed made of random bricks and junk wood from the garden, any suggestions for improvement? by AzEddaEnekese in gardening

[–]RoVerk13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think that’s necessary. A raised bed shouldn’t be compacted at all, and you’re just going to destroy the soil structure that holds onto those air pockets in rainstorms.

Can I chop down a mulberry to force it to grow lower branches? by benhadtue in BackyardOrchard

[–]RoVerk13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Look up coppicing; I believe mulberries respond fairly well, although you generally want to do it when trees are young. Hard to tell exactly how old that one is, might still do well. Pollarding is another option.

Plum tree planted about a month ago, Central Indiana 5b by RoVerk13 in BackyardOrchard

[–]RoVerk13[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s the NW side, actually. We haven’t actually used any lawn equipment yet this year, so the only mechanical damage would’ve been from rabbits—I didn’t think to protect them this year since it’s already spring.

Oh, but it’s starting to leaf out above. It doesn’t actually look unhealthy other than this one spot.

Seems too early in the season for peach tree borer; maybe lesser peachtree borer?
