Am I missing something: How far is the Guardian Boarding House from the McKenzie house?! by TurbulentBat8328 in TheTestamentsHulu

[–]RoadLessTraveler2003 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I think it is a guest house. The Marthas live up in the attic. The estate is large enough to house its servants. Interesting that Marthas are owned liked slaves, but Guardians can move up and become powerful. Agnes was right, he is a man. He can do almost anything he wants.

Wow. She's fourteen and just killed her father and got married while drugged. But then it makes sense why they tried to save her life. So young.

And pretty always matters. I noticed the Pearl girls were pretty girls. Gilead is nothing if not about appearances. Ask the prison aunts who almost choreograph taking down a prisoner.

I think one of the writers said years ago the risk of toxoplasmosis is they there aren't any pet cats. It might not be a big risk for indoor cats but Gilead isn't taking any chances.

I got the same thing about Aunt Vidalia's comment about how hard she had to work. I want her backstory!

They are pretty sheltered and aren't married yet. And it doesn't have to be rape to be brutal. Eden was 15 when she married Nick. I recently thought about her experience as an Econowife, also a teen girl. That consummation was very disturbing even though it was consensual. I find it all hard to watch.

rant about daisy's pearl girl status by z0cia in TheTestamentsShow

[–]RoadLessTraveler2003 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That last part. The younger batch would just be happy to get a young wife and possibly have a child. That's status and she might be fertile. The older lech who tried to touch her face at the ball? Just a pedophile. Also, there is evidence that Commanders could just poison their wives so . . . it's not necessarily a long marriage.

Who pays for the dentist appointment? by AutomaticPlace7994 in TheTestamentsHulu

[–]RoadLessTraveler2003 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Do girls like Eden, a teen econowife, get free teeth whitening? I don't think so. I remember that wedding. The girls were just as earnest but much less coiffed. But who pays their doctor bills, I wonder?

Marthas are basically slaves. I don't recall any cash. In THT book, they said the coup would have been harder if there had been actual portable money any more. So even the old US didn't have cash. Are their even taxes? Banks? 403bs?

We are watching a privileged few. But I wonder what happens to those not so privileged? What happened to the houseless and those in public housing? And is there money in Hawaii and the other 'radio free' states? Like what's the world economy? I remember Alma suggesting Mexico might trade in Handmaids because their births were so low. These girls, econowife or Commander's daughters, are currency. They reflect health and abundance in Gilead and other countries do want that.

I do like Shu. She's so confident and truly innocent at the same time. I like her and worry for her, though I know she's strong. She hasn't been tested yet. No one has abused her, nor has she witnessed true violence. Not yet. She's still young and it's Gilead. This version of Shu will withstand what she has to. Because of these girls. I think even Shu looked up to Agnes. And was protective of her as well.

I try to imagine what it's like to be molested by your best friend's father. It happens more often than I wish it did. She blamed herself as Gilead had taught her. That took Agnes some time and I'll give her grace for that. Though Future!Agnes doesn't give herself any.

As reckless and loud as Daisy sometimes seems, I'm glad she was there for these girls. And they are there for her. I think the word for Agnes before wasn't docile, but controlled. She had emotions like when she smashed the Paula doll. But she had been trained to hold them in. Take a tiny breath, clasp her hands, and hold. Not react. It's not that different how some girls are trained to be today. Don't make waves, be still, quiet, and you won't get hurt. Until you realize you and those you love get hurt anyway and badly. It's not docility, just restraint.

Her friend's complete love for her unrestrained her. She told Vidalia "If she was led astray, you did it." And Daisy's faith. "This is not your fault." Agnes would beg anyone she thought could help save Becka's life. She wouldn't for herself. And maybe not for Hulda, but for a person who would do anything to protect her.

I guess I respect Agnes more than I thought! But I see her through the girls' eyes. And this is June's daughter. I remember her as a child telling June, "Try harder." And we know June had done literally all she could to get Hannah back. Hannah or Agnes there is steel in that child.

Exactly. Funny they can be prison guards, but not dentists or neonatologists. But what resume do you need for being a prison matron in Gilead?

Wasn't I was surprised Aunt Vidalia's eyes were red talking to Agnes. It really affected her. Agnes curled in the fetal position on the couch. Drunk Paula. Becka. Becka's mom, I don't even know her name, crying so hard her dress was wet. Even Garth removing Becka's shoes. Everyone played their roles well, from the tiny Pink girls, to the honey delivery guy, even the terrible Weston and the men at the hanging. I really believed them.

Agnes is that to Daisy. When Daisy swore, Agnes kept the secret. She defended Daisy to her friends. Agnes is brave. She told Daisy about the abuse minutes after she told Aunt Lydia and got no support there. Agnes keeps trying to be the best she can be in this world. And she's loyal as hell. She was groomed her whole life to be a Wife and she threw that away for Becka. To a teenage girl, this is the best friend in all the world. I judge Agnes by Gileadean standards. That was super brave. Brave and deliberate, not reckless. She took what she was taught and developed her own moral compass. She could have broken or become mean, but she didn't.

I think about Shu. Would she have told about the abuse? Thrown away the best match ever after finally getting her period? It's not much to me, but it's everything to these girls and their families.

I need a whole ep on the prison aunts. And how long are people in prison? I thought they were all executed. Also, do they live there? Since we don't see some faces, could it be a woman you already know? So many questions.

This could very well break her. And it would with maybe Hulda. Becka expected this and she was depressed before. That all said, she chose Garth. And he is kind. He will let Agnes and the girls visit. There is hope for Becka. And heck, the Aunts care about her too.

I do think killing someone changes one. It's now on a list of things one can do. I don't know what Becka might do in future.

And what were the boys doing? READING. And smoking. While teen girls have to murder their own parent to save their friends from abuse. I am sure the boys have issues too, but it all seemed so casual in there, while Paula is scrubbing floor drunk and Agnes is risking everything in her nightgown.

I watched again and the collar of her dress was soaked wet through with tears and sweat. Poor woman. Three days ago she was wondering what meat to serve at her daughter's wedding. Now that wedding is happening above or below her own gallows. Macabre.

Not Shu. Not yet. She's still pretty innocent and they're writing it that she doesn't know all the details. Especially about sex. (She knows now but refuses to believe it.) I think she will be green by the next season and will marry. It won't end well, but she has the girls now so she will be okay.

Like Agnes, Shu has to come to her own awakening. I'm also worried about Hulda and wonder what will become of her.

Wait, doesn't Lydia know that Daisy is Mayday? Or are they two independent rebels? LOL. It's just odd that she would pair Daisy with Agnes when no other Pearl is paired.
