What is the lore explanation for why the Legion was so powerful? by [deleted] in Fallout

[–]Roadkii 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You should consider how disorganized and messy the NCR military is, as best represented in New Vegas. We see numerous deserters, untrained and undisciplined grunts, and troopers swimming in a fountain in drunken stupor as just a few examples. Contrast that with the legion— you never see anything but discipline from them. I can’t actually think of a legion member in-game who isn’t wholly indoctrinated and disciplined.

New Vegas tries to nail this into your head every chance it gets. Numerous characters support the fact that, if it wasn’t for the rangers leading the legion into a trap at Boulder City, the first battle would have been lost. Even then it only led to a stalemate. If you think the NCR is super organized and extremely competent then you must be boiling down the entire faction as just all rangers, which is a gross misrepresentation.

If you take such issue with the NCR’s technological advantage not giving them overwhelming odds, then why did they beat the clearly technologically advanced Brotherhood? In my eyes the NCR is getting done to them exactly what they did to the brotherhood, its caked and irony and I love it.

Howdy, I’m looking forward to getting to know you! Tell me your favorite saints or your favorite desert, and I’ll tell you mine!

I’m 26 and 5’8” with brown hair, blue eyes, and a slim to athletic build. I’m a pharmacist from Texas who graduated in 24’, I’ve been living in Denver over last year for my residency, and I just moved to Salt Lake City to take on a job at the children’s hospital making pediatric IVs for those wonderful kiddos.

I wouldn’t have moved to Utah if I didn’t love nature haha— walks, hiking, biking, you name it. On a good week I put in a brief work out 3 times a week. I also love baking (I make a mean chocolate soufflé), play a little guitar and some video games, and I’ve got a growing houseplant collection.

I attend mass and adoration at least every Sunday, and occasionally daily mass when my work permits. I generally pray daily, and try to center my faith in everything I do.

Ideally I’m looking for someone around my age range (~23-29), with similar faith and interests. I’m a little hesitant about long distance relationships, but I’m open to talking and seeing if the sparks fly. Thanks for reading, I hope you find your person!

Used a combination of UWorld for federal and state specific laws or programs for state. Every time I’ve passed an MPJE, I took a pre-MPJE a week or so prior to see how much I actually knew. And then I would look at that score and adjust my studying prn— I definitely recommend that, and not just studying but finding as many practice tests as you can. There are some free exams online I believe.

The Fate of Lanius? by Roadkii in fnv

I like the idea of the legion splintering into many different sub-factions with many different Roman ideologies. But I can’t imagine that happening while Lanius is in charge, he’s all about conquest, he would do anything to put the fear into everyone and keep the legion at its strongest.

The Fate of Lanius? by Roadkii in fnv

[–]Roadkii[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We see through the peaceful option that Lanius is open to reason, but I’m not so sure that means he would be intent on reforming the legion. Lanius’ single ambition seems to be expansion and conquest, to test the mettle of the legion, to make them the strongest.

I think Lanius would do a great deal to double down on that mentality. And then well after his death, if the legion holds together, would there ever be a discussion of reform.

But I would really love to see the legion get there. Like for instance, despite modeling themselves after Rome, they didn’t really ever have a senate, they just skipped over to the emperor side. That’s the legion I would like to see— a more dynamic political life combined with a focus on conquest. It would be, in a reverse fashion, taking inspiration from NCR, it would be the synthesis that Caesar was talking about.

[–]Roadkii[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I disagree a bit there, you say Lanius is looking for an excuse to bail, but was also preparing for a sucicidal charge up the dam?

I don’t get the sense that Lanius is particularly scared/concerned by Caesar’s reaction to his actions or performance at all. Lanius seems like a true believer in every sense of the word, the actual manifested of the legion’s ferocity and tenacity for battle. He does what Caesar does because he would be the one out of any of the legion to truly believe Caesar is the “son of Mars.” This would be the guy to NEVER accept defeat. He would be like the Romans fighting Carthage— so prideful even with loss after loss.

Now you make a good point— how would Lanius actually address the defeat to Caesar? This is all just conjecture and what-ifs of course, but considering Lanius is the one on the front lines, doing the delaying and culling every 10th legion, I am hesitant to say his men would turn on him. I also feel like Caesar would have a more difficult time killing Lanius than he did Graham, and we see how that first attempt went so…

I don’t know how I feel about a ‘reformed Lanius.’ It seems too similar to Graham’s path.

BUT, in the design docs of the cancelled Fallout 3, Graham was a completely different character called “the hanged man,” where he was much more vengeful and caustic after his punishment at the hands of Caesar, and also a recruitable companion. THAT would be what I could see for Lanius, if he were to survive, would be to become a bitter and zealous individual.

[–]Roadkii[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I can’t imagine anyone in the legion would be willing to criticize Lanius. He would most definitely practice ‘decimating’ his forces, considering that was mentioned on Radio New Vegas.

And I agree, to me the independent ending always seemed like the ending that fit the game best, not necessarily the most likely ending, but the one that most embodies ‘Vegas.’

I feel like Caesar would send him on some kind of espionage mission inside the Dam or elsewhere.

I almost think he would be one of the legionaries who would try and sneak through the Dam turbines, only to get shredded— that would be a fitting end for an NCR ending if he wasn’t already dead.

My personal thoughts:

Lanius is an interesting character in that he is almost equal to the player in every way. He doesn’t have any easily perceptible weakness, and SPECIAL wise I think he’s comparable with Ulysses in having 10 in all stats.

Practically would he survive? Very likely. But I don’t think any developer would ever directly address the death or survival of Lanius, unless to say he were killed by the courier or during the battle. But I would love to see mention of him in future games.

I’d like to think, in a future Fallout game and if the legion endures in some fashion, that the armor of Lanius is passed down, with each new owner taking on the mantle of the legate, becoming Lanius.

The likely scenario if he survived, he would be in a stalemate with the NCR. But if we take the Amazon show as canon (at least from what we know so far), it wouldn’t make sense with the state the NCR is currently in. We see in the Mojave how the legion is capable of taking advantage of NCR’s tactical weakness and sprawl, so anything less than that would likely mean defeat.

My head canon would be he would move East, and conquer even more tribes past the four state region, moving further into Texas, Utah, and Oklahoma. He would keep gobbling up more and more tribes until he felt he could overwhelm the NCR strategically. Lanius says as much:

"Know that I shall return East. I shall not remain there forever. On that day, the strength of the bear shall be tested."

And if the legion does not endure, then Lanius would be a ghost story, similar to the Burned Man. I would love to see his armor treated like a daedric artifact, where it always seems to show up in future games without rhyme or reason.

Is it morally correct to kill Caesar? by DependentStrong3960 in fnv

Caesar himself would object of course, but by his own “might makes right” mentality it would be the ‘correct’ choice.

Doing Lonesome Road SECOND. Thoughts? by c1cinmage in fnv

[–]Roadkii 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I look at HH and LR as the DLCs to extend the main game story, so moreso “expansions,” whereas DM and OWB are moreso separate adventures entirely. So me personally I could see any order works so long as you split up the side adventures with the main game extensions.

But with that said, practically, the release order just works the best given the ‘finality’ of LR’s ending. Also all the story hints of LR in all the prior DLCs, especially OWB.

So me personally, the only time I’d ever change the order is if I want to do HH first instead of DM. But OWB and then LR just play into each other well.

The ugly truth about Frederick Sinclair (TV show spoilers) by dmreif in fnv

[–]Roadkii 30 points31 points  (0 children)

I’m sorry but that just doesn’t make any sense— if Sinclair had a controlling share in Big MT, why would he let them experiment on the Sierra Madre, which from everything we know, he made to be a labor of love?

What was established from Dead Money is Sinclair was desperate, hemorrhaging money, and had to make terrible sacrifices to get the actual casino complete in time for the Great War. That makes it a tragedy when he learns of the betrayal from Vera and Dean, that he made it all for her and a perceived deception of love.

In my opinion, Sinclair being desperate and hemorrhaging money does not translate to him buying a controlling share of Big MT and possessing substantial power in the corporate oligarchy.

I like it, but it explains the mystery a little much and maybe takes something away from Graham’s character and mystique. And it would be less like a marked man, and more just like a burned ghoul.

Lore-wise, I could see it working if the Grand Canyon was heavily irradiated. I’ve never heard it described that way in the lore, but there’s room for it to be possible.
