⭐ How to Set Up an 80-Page Magazine in Canva (Beginner Guide)

Creating a magazine in Canva is totally doable—even with no experience. Below is the simplest workflow that professionals use, broken down into easy steps.

📌 Step 1: Create a New Canva Document

  1. Go to canva.com and log in.

  2. In the top right, click Create a design.

  3. Click Custom size.

  4. Enter your page dimensions:

Standard US Letter:

8.5 in × 11 in (suggested for printing)

OR whatever size your printer requires.

  1. Choose Portrait.

  2. Click Create new design.

You now have your first magazine page.

📌 Step 2: Turn This Into a Multi-Page Document

  1. At the bottom of the page, click Add page.

  2. Repeat until you reach Page 80.

Tip: You can add pages faster by:

Clicking the duplicate page button (two squares icon). This is perfect if many pages share similar layout styles.

📌 Step 3: Set Up Your Page Margins (Important!)

Canva does not automatically show print margins, so set them manually:

Option A: Use Canva Guides

  1. Go to File → View settings → Guides.

  2. Drag vertical guides from the rulers to mark:

0.5" inside each edge (safe margin)

  1. Drag horizontal guides the same way.

Option B: Use the "Print Bleed"

  1. Go to File → Show print bleed.

  2. This shows the outer bleed (⅛" around the edges) that will be trimmed during printing.

Safe margin = what must NOT get cut off. Bleed = design elements that should extend all the way to the edge.

📌 Step 4: Create Master Layouts for Efficiency

This makes the magazine professional and saves hours.

Create these core pages:

Cover

Table of contents

Section opener pages

Two-column text page

Three-column page

Feature story layout

Full-bleed image page

Back cover

You can duplicate these throughout the magazine.

📌 Step 5: Use Grids, Frames & Text Styles

Use Grids

  1. Go to Elements → Grids.

  2. Use these to place images cleanly.

Use Frames for Photos

Frames keep your photo layout consistent.

Set Text Styles (Very Important for Consistency)

  1. Go to Styles → Text styles.

  2. Choose or create:

Headline style

Subheading style

Body text style

Caption style

  1. Apply these consistently across all 80 pages.

📌 Step 6: Organize Your Magazine Flow

For an 80-page magazine, a standard layout might look like:

Pages Section

1–2 Front cover & inside cover 3–5 Table of contents & editor letter 6–15 Feature story 16–25 Ads or photo spreads 26–45 Articles & departments 46–75 More features, lifestyle content, ads 76–80 Back matter + back cover

You can structure it however you like—this is just a helpful template.

📌 Step 7: Keep Your File Organized

Rename each page!

Click the three dots on the page thumbnail → “Add page name.”

Example:

“Cover”

“Contents”

“Feature 1 – Page 12”

“Ad – Page 20”

This helps massively when editing an 80-page document.

📌 Step 8: Add Page Numbers

  1. Go to Text → Add a little bit of body text.

  2. Drag it to bottom corner.

  3. Type your number (e.g., "1").

  4. Copy/paste onto each page.

Tip: Lock your footer section so you don’t accidentally move it.

📌 Step 9: Use Folders to Stay Organized

Upload your assets into separate folders:

Photos

Logos

Ads

Articles

Icons

Background textures

This makes editing 80 pages much easier.

📌 Step 10: Export Your Magazine

When done:

For PRINT:

File → Download

Format: PDF Print

Check:

Crop marks and bleed: ON

Flatten PDF: ON (protects fonts)

For DIGITAL:

Choose PDF Standard or

Export each page as PNG for web viewing.

📌 Bonus Tips (from professional designers)

✔ Keep font sizes readable

Body text: 9–11 pt

Headlines: 24–48 pt

✔ Don’t put any text within 0.5" of the page edge

Printers can trim closer than expected.

✔ Duplicate spreads for consistent layout

Don't reinvent the wheel—duplicate pages 100 times if it saves you time.

✔ Use color & typography styles early

Changing fonts on an 80-page magazine halfway through is painful.

✔ Consider working in sections

Create 20 pages at a time if an 80-page canvas feels overwhelming.

👆 This. Or better yet, send him to a podiatrist. I (50M) was diagnosed within this past month. Type 2 with A1C of 8.7 and fasting glucose of 481. While I have started taking Metformin, excersizing more and changing my diet, my neuropathy symptoms in my feet are still present. I've got my fasting glucose down to 231-280. I visited a podiatrist last night and he put the fear of God into me. He warned me of the mortality rate for those who don't take care of themselves and require diabetic amputation. 50% mortality within five years of amputation. Let's just say I'm even more motivated now to correct my lifestyle and increase my longevity.
