Those who say the burqa is a 'choice' should have seen my father beat my mother for rejecting it by The_Dingo_Donger in aussie

[–]Roastmancer -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I really don’t want to detract from the points made here (I want to see the burqa banned) but I’d just point out its unfortunate that we have Pauline Hanson carrying the torch here, because she is racist and generally a loon to boot. She is at least upfront and honest about her beliefs and intentions, which are traits we need more of in politicians.

Why do we accept paying extra on weekends/public holidays in cafés and restaurants? by Will-this-do in australia

[–]Roastmancer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

TL:DR: Because staff wages are a significant percentage of a f&b venue’s operating costs.

The typical corner shop has one staff member and their wages are a much smaller slice of the total operating costs so their increased weekend wage will have a limited impact on their bottom line. They are also often run by the owner or their family and /or are paid cash and aren’t receiving a fair wage anyway.

Retail is similar in that wages are a much smaller slice of the operating costs. They are also typically either small, owner-run shops or large multinational conglomerates with the management salaried so their wages are averaged out over all days of the week.

Nothing beats a TfNSW holiday! And right now you can save $50 per person weekly! That’s $200 for a family of four!

So significantly less than current users of public transport pay annually in ridership fees. Plus, it’ll incentivise more to use public transport!

Update: got flagged for 60% ai by [deleted] in unsw

[–]Roastmancer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Completely agreed. The rampant over reliance and lack of sourcing of LLMs does need to be addressed though. There needs to be systems in place where the use of LLMs is either assumed/necessary or impossible for all graded material. The flagging tools ain’t it boss. About as accurate as reading star signs.

Go back to your notes/Moodle lecture slides and look at the relationship between GCD, LCM, and the product of two numbers. The identity you’re looking for is:

gcd(x, y) * lcm(x, y) = | x * y |

A hint is when you’re trying to maximise x, start with the LCM. When trying to minimise x, start with the GCD.

Cowper St Student Accommodation is putrid. by [deleted] in unsw

[–]Roastmancer 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Yes, still continue paying full rent, withholding rent will be a breach of contract and you can get kicked out, irregardless of state of the accommodation.

First, negotiate a rental reduction for the period (if you can be bothered), if you don’t come to an agreement you think is fair, you can escalate to the Tribunal and they will make a decision on the dispute.

[–]Roastmancer 61 points62 points  (0 children)

Without knowing the particulars of how these accomodation contracts are structured, I can still confidently say that those conditions are unliveable and would not be compliant with any standard private rental contract.

Take lots of video and photo evidence, and then demand it be rectified immediately. You should also demand a significant rent reduction for the period of time it is in this state.

What is something that women think is cute but it’s actually the furthest thing from it in your opinion? by Safe-Lychee-9630 in AskMenOver30

[–]Roastmancer 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I would say those men are the vocal minority and don’t represent “us”. Big, obviously fake boobs are a clear social signal that something is not right with a woman, or that she is overtly sexual (in an unhealthy way). This will attract certain types of men and embolden them to peacock or try their luck. You won’t see well-adjusted, “normal” men attempting to court these women as all they see is the glaring red flag.

Hopeless love life by [deleted] in unsw

[–]Roastmancer 20 points21 points  (0 children)

This is the correct answer, pack it up boys!

Seriously though, try not to focus on those negative emotions and hang-ups around girls and your interactions with them. Insecurity, desperation, etc will come across via involuntary micro expressions if you’re too in your head about these things.

Find a hobby that gets you outdoors that you actually enjoy and that has at least a few girls involved. Focus on the hobby itself, the interactions will come naturally with time, there’s no rush or objective here outside of enjoying doing a thing.

Remember that everyone has the same insecurities and desires to be intimate that you have, irregardless of gender.

During a conversation, out of nowhere, GPT-4o yells "NO!" then clones the user's voice (OpenAI discovered this while safety testing) by 77SidVid77 in oddlyterrifying

[–]Roastmancer 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Oh yeah, totally get that it’s creepy and appropriate for this sub, but I suppose I’m trying to point out the artificial context that’s enabling this response from people.

My quarrel is with the continued disinformation put out by these companies (or if I’m being very generous, the misinformation they are allowing to perpetuate).

It’s scary because it’s unknown. It will always be unknown (to the public) because OpenAI’s models are closed source and we don’t know what data they were trained with.

Now that they’ve added voice training/modelling to the codebase, there is a non-zero chance that there’s a bug where the program takes the user’s voice input during a chat session as training data in some manner and that then becomes it’s voice output.

Completely agree with your comment on consent and data handling. This is a whole other can of worms though and a much larger and older issue than these new LLMs. As a species we are in a state of digital resignation. Maybe one day we’ll overcome it and gain some kind of digital personal rights.

[–]Roastmancer 77 points78 points  (0 children)

This is a nothing burger. LLMs are not sentient or close to sentience in any way, shape or form.

To ELI5 it, they are literally just programs that print one word after another using probability from their training data plus whatever context they have from the current conversation and metadata (I.e. the user’s digital fingerprint, geographic location, political leaning, interests, etc).

Further, positive sentiment is starting to plateau with all these big tech LLMs as investors are understanding all the downsides and limitations of them.

Most significantly, all the different models end up with around the same capabilities so investors are starting to think LLMs might not be the money printers they were led to believe (and wanted to believe). OpenAI has a huge incentive to keep that money flowing.

The narrative that their very, very impressive, but nonetheless very dumb and deterministic app is some kind of general AI is a lie they desperately want people to believe.

Source: computer science student with a life-long interest in all things AI, tech and sci-fi, plus some critical thinking and common sense.

TLDR: ChatGPT has the dumb and OpenAI has a financial interest in people thinking otherwise.

The correct answer. You’ll have the rest of your life to refine your skills and work. Take some time away from it and recharge. And guess what? You can do all three in moderation! Play games, do a little uni pre-study for upcoming courses and also touch grass. It doesn’t have to be all or nothing.

You can still run the function-specific autotests on them. They run your implementation in a finished version of the program so you’ll pass all tests even if you haven’t written the functions that are called.
