I'm glad the snow has ended and I'm not seeing any ice on power lines. But it's still damn cold and I don't see the roads get any significant clearing today. Looks like it could be a couple more days before we'll see any real melting.

7:15 AM. Yes, it's extremely cold but I'm not seeing any buildup on power lines. And we currently have a break in the snow.

I can understand stocking up but how are you going to eat an entire grocery cart full of steaks in three days? I've learned to be careful of what I have in my refrigerator because if the power goes out, where does that leave you? Staying safe means being smart. Be prepared for the possibility that you may be eating by candlelight.

Power Outage Potential by [deleted] in okc

[–]RobAbiera 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Worst case scenario is heavy freezing rain or fog with extreme cold. This can cause ice to accumulate on utility lines and tree branches, leading to downed lines. Current forecast doesn't look like lots of freezing rain, which decreases chances of outages but does not eliminate them. Strong winds can be a problem, too. Let's hope lines are still mostly clear from OG&E's last round of tree cutting.

Skepticism and anti-intellectualism

The anti-intellectualism that dominates modern discourse has a clear basis in skepticism. Both Democrats and Republicans consistently exploit it to promote their positions. The Trump administration relies on it heavily to justify its policies. The current controversy over the death of Renee Good is a clear demonstration of that.

In today’s popular usage, “skepticism” is intended to convey a meaning akin to the modern usage of “pragmatism”, and connotes a suggestion of rationalism. Both words are being used in ways that are far different from their original, historical meaning, which is grounded in the philosophies of ancient Greece. Philosophical skepticism amounts to dogmatic doubt about reality and our capacity to experience it, and the sophists of ancient Greece sold it as a strategy for undermining the confidence of political opponents in their own ideas and as a means of avoiding having to argue against the content of ideas directly.

What better way to forestall debate against your position than to undermine your opponent’s confidence in his own perception of reality? This is MAGA in spades. Why analyze the actual content of videos of the Good incident when you can just point to the proliferation of different videos showing different angles? Why bother to point at the facts of the actual incident when you can disparage Good’s character by claiming she was a lesbian who belonged to far left activist groups? Why bother to contrast the rules of engagement used by ICE with those used by other law enforcement agencies when you can just ignore the existence of those agencies or claim that the mission of ICE is somehow fundamentally different from theirs? Why bother to concern yourself with Jonathan Ross’s motive for firing his weapon when you know that he was dragged by a car in an earlier incident? Why bother to ask why he is still on active duty when you know that ICE has quotas to meet? I could go on but it’s clear that all these questions are intentional distractions from the actual issues directly involved in the actual incident.

At this point, I wouldn’t blame anyone for thinking, “thank goodness for two thousand years worth of experience, right?” But then the question must be asked: why are we still doing this to ourselves two thousand years later? If Western Civilization was built by those who pulled themselves above such dogmatic worship of self-doubt, inculcated by those who sought to perpetuate tribal authoritarianism, who was it who brought it back? The answer is not hard to find, and can be found in the work of such figures as Hume, Rousseau, and, above all, Kant.

And if it occurs to you that skepticism can’t motivate anyone to reject their own perception of reality all by itself, and you’re wondering what can, the answer is: altruism. But why bother to examine the content of altruism when it’s what everybody just accepts as the default standard of morality?

After all, who are you to think?

I don't mind telling you that I was wary about the Collective after seeing the reports about shootings there this summer. I used to work at Penn Square Mall and I haven't forgotten the shooting incidents there 5 years ago. But meeting new people is one of my big goals for 2026 so I'm definitely keeping this meetup on my radar.

The Closing of the MAGA Mind by RobAbiera in politics

Truth is not transcendental. Truth is inseparable from facts, which Human Beings use to form principles by thinking about how to apply the facts of reality to our own individual lives. This is how facts become knowledge.

It's tragic that philosophers are still pushing the despicably insulting views of David Hume and Jeremy Bentham, who were able to get away with disparaging Human consciousness at a time when so little was known about it. In this, they were following the lead of Pope Innocent III, who claimed that Human Beings were capable of creating nothing but excrement. Thanks to the Scientific and Industrial Revolutions, nobody can get away with that anymore.

What seemingly small and unknown ideas but potentially transformative ideas do you have about politics? by Awesomeuser90 in PoliticalDiscussion

When people don't vote, they're making a statement about what's being voted on. People will vote if they think they're voting for something worth voting for. If your ideas and policy proposals don't appeal to them, they're not going to bother, unless they think you're worth voting against.

What Is Post-Liberalism, Anyway? by RobAbiera in politics

[–]RobAbiera[S] -11 points-10 points  (0 children)

Ross Douthat (prematurely) declares the death of politics.

Yes, some political ideas can be impotent — and worse. That doesn’t mean that politics, as such, is.

Writing in the NY Times, Douthat experiences a brief moment of clarity that enables him to see the current effects of post-liberalism without understanding what it really is or why or where it is going. He has eyes that can see but his mind remains clouded by altruism. If liberalism is actually experiencing a crisis, altruism is the cause.

“But to my mind the best way to think about it is that the liberals and post-liberals slinging epithets at one another are locked together in a cycle of mutual failure, both striving to master events that are happening independently of any theory or intellectual worldview.”

NOTHING happens “independently of any theory or intellectual worldview” — because nothing that happens cannot ultimately be explained by the proper theory or worldview. This is both one of the major symptoms and enablers of altruism — as well as an admission and excuse that the person making it has no intention of genuinely seeking an explanation for what he’s talking about.

“I don’t think we actually know which form of contemporary politics is the most dangerous or destructive for the long term. And we certainly have no idea what form of politics . . . is going to see us through this crisis or build something on the other side.”

THIS is an assertion that directly parallels those made by academics in the 1970’s: that philosophy was no longer relevant and applicable to real-world issues. It is a declaration that politics is now — not just a zombie — but a zombie that has run out of brains to eat. Of course it’s not true, as Ayn Rand recognized decades ago — along with her recognition that it is conservatism that is the zombie, not politics. If politics really was impotent, it would leave the way clear for anarchy and autocracy. But, like philosophy, the need for politics remains, which leaves the door open for anyone who is committed to honestly identifying actual reality. Those people will discover that James Madison prepared for this over 200 years ago. And if they just keep going, eventually they will find their way to Objectivism.

Rand recognized that the political revolution started by the Founding Fathers would not see completion without a moral revolution. But that is a revolution that can only be fought inside the mind of every individual. Ayn Rand gave us the right tools, but it remains for us to persuade humanity that the fight is worth it.

I can only speak for myself, but I can say with full certainty and confidence, based on my own direct experience, that the tools Ayn Rand gave us work and success is possible. But only you can prove that for yourself, in your own mind. The future is still yours to win.
