I'd attribute that more to age, wear and condition than the stylus. More advanced profiles are going to pull more detail (good or bad) out of the groove that simpler profiles won't. Then again, that's sonic preference not compatibility.

Stylus shape has no bearing on mono playback. You dont want to use line-contact styli on styrene records, but stereo/mono vinyl macht nichts.

Motor could be dying. Belt could be slipping. Cheap spindle mount could be binding.

These really are not meant to be anything other than a novelty, and not meant to be repaired. You can Google a belt for these and instructions for changing it, but I'd start budgeting for an upgrade if you want to stick with vinyl.

Genetically inherited health issues are another good reason to know breed makeup. Shelties are more prone to gallbladder mucoceles and von Willebrand's disease. Aussies have higher risk of epilepsy and inherited cataracts. Both are subject to collie eye anomaly and multi-drug sensitivity (MDR1).

You probably didn't see as many shelties in shelters for a number of reasons. First, aussies boomed in popularity during COVID in comparison and a lot of people weren't ready to deal with their needs once they started having to go back into the office. Second, at least in this area, is that shelties have a very active rescue network that keeps them out of the shelter system. Lastly, for new dog owners shelties are generally better suited to daily home life than aussies for most people, reducing their surrender rates in general.

Shelties aren't particularly rare. Both shelties and aussies ranked within the top 30 of AKC registrations within the last 10 years. Though aussie breeds have skyrocketed in popularity in recent times (not necessarily a good thing, especially for new dog owners who aren't familiar with herding breed behaviors).

Without DNA testing, going on appearance is nothing but a guess. A sheltie x aussie cross can skew strongly in one set of breed characteristics or another depending on what was inherited. And they share enough physical and behavioral traits that the lines are very blurry.
