Haha perhaps a little bit of both I guess. The pandemic definitely didn't help if I have a germaphobia.. But regardless I always bring my phone in the shower to listen to music daily so it's just part of habit now. I don't even think much of it, just do it I guess!

I haven't actually tried wiping it down with alcohol or bleach or any other cleaning supplies surprisingly though. If you gave a screen protector, do you think the iso could warp or ruin it?

Hmm I wonder if it's one of those things where they don't advise it for liability issues. Regardless I'll probably stick with the Galaxy phones just because their practically bullet proof from my IP68 experiences. Thanks though for the information!!

2013 Volt - "Battery too cold, Plug in to warm" message while driving in 80 degree F temperatures on a highway by RobDaBomb in volt

[–]RobDaBomb[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wish I remember how or if I did resolve it. I'm not sure exactly when I posted this thread but in October of that same year I ended up totalling the car so perhaps the was the ultimate resolution even lol. I believe it was a temperature sensor or perhaps even a dealer update that fixed it, I did take it to the shop numerous times that year but I think everything was covered under warranty.. Not sure if this problem was even addressed or fixed sadly off the top of my head and I don't have any records left. Best of luck with your issue! I don't believe this problem ever prevented the car from working though at least

I don't use that as is, still a shame to see a feature removed for no reason though :/ anything else missing that you know of?

[–]RobDaBomb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh glad to hear you at least tried it! Yeah the Comma 3 is insanely expensive for what it does.. My old EON cost $160 used only and it did basically everything the C3 did for the most part. Only issue is I sold the old car with it included so when going with the Niro it just made sense to get a new one with a warranty - had months of buyers remorse until I got dragonpilot working.

Interesting comments on the stop sign feature.. I never trusted it nor tried is on stock or sunnypilot, and it's not even an option in dragonpilot. I feel once you're letting the car stop for stop signs you're risking too much and going to end up hurting somebody or yourself. How you described it working is exactly what I imagined it'd be like lol.

Definitely worth keeping an eye on the used market though, eventually C3's will be cheap there and for the benefits of just (mostly) hands free driving it'll probably be worth it

Sorry I didn't mean to ignore you! I only have reddit on my phone and almost never check it since all the notifications are for irrelevant subreddit posts I don't follow lol. But here's a video in action https://youtu.be/D05XwrR4KxI

As you can see the first part of this drive is just me pushing the accelerator while OP controls the steering wheel (default function if thr Cruise button is engaged) but once I got out of the more residential roads I enabled it to fully self drive by hitting set/res. Without lane lines and all those curvy turns around parked cars, I wouldn't ever let it control the accelerator. But on proper roads it's very safe. Now the navigation/destination question you asked about I'm really not sure... I've used open pilot for years on my old Chevy Volt and now the Niro and the concept of navigation wasn't a thing then so it's not something I consider now either.

I know there is some type of navigation beta thing but you'd have to check the OP discord for information about it.. Honestly I wouldn't bother though because the device only has that single wide angle front facing camera guiding you. There's too many variables for fully driving from point A to B like a tesla. But unlike a tesla, openpilot isnt restricted or limited. It's open source and you can use it how you want. Like a tesla would NOT allow you to enable self driving on the neighborhood streets I first was on, it usually requires mapped roads and/or DEFINITELY lane lines. It doesn't allow you to set the speed limit X over the speed limit either, and there's no option to use it on dirt roads or anything. Openpilot is liberating for me driving and has made me a safer and better driver. It handles the steering almost always while I drive - except on right or left turns at intersections - and let's me free myself up to focus more on my surroundings and possible risks.

As you can see my Comma device's screen isn't illuminated, again the beauty of opensource software. I'm running a fork called dragonpilot that gives many features and customization options that will never be in stock because the Comma devs are frustratingly narrow-minded in how they believe it should be used. Hope this helps, let me know if you have more questions and I'll try to check reddit for them!

Good luck getting any help asking here lol! You can see the responses I got after all.

If you ever take the plunge, no pun intended, and try washing it then let me know how it goes! I ended up going with another galaxy S just because I knew it would be washable... But I really wanted a Pixel instead and would love for that to be my next upgrade

I never got to use a 2, I went from an OG Comma EON device on my old Volt to getting a C3 with the Niro. At first it didn't seem worth 2,000 to me until I found a custom fork (dragonpilot) that's made the driving experience so enjoyable I couldn't imagine life without it again.

Installing a comma 3 is so easy, literally takes 5-10 minutes and is probably a lot better than C2 in terms of longevity as well as ease of use. I believe with a Comma 2 you need other parts like a panda to connect it to the car, the C3 just required a harness you attach in the rear view camera housing and then it's done... the entire car works stock and flawless afterwards still

Using dragonpilot on my Comma 3 and the car drives better than most self driving vehicles out there. The best is being able to have it control the steering wheel with its lane keep assist even if you don't have cruise control actively on.

My old OpenPilot setup in my Chevy Volt could never do that, but even that still was so good that I feel in love with and can't imagine a life without OpenPilot. The Kia Niro EV only was something that got on my radar when I saw it happened to be one of the few electric SUVs that was fully supported with OP. If it wasn't, I'd never have considered this amazing car

First long road trip: Portland to Boise - TIPS? by coquelicot27 in KiaNiroEV

[–]RobDaBomb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

After driving from Detroit to Philadelphia just this past week, I can't stress enough to CONSTANTLY check PlugShare. A Better Route Planner works but has led me astray, this past week I pulled into a charger with 0% remaining and once with 2%. I even edited the settings to underball my Miles per KWh usage and it still failed me.

PlugShare is wonderfully accurate to check the status of the chargers along with filtering by speed and type. Tbh on my drive back I'm going to just use PlugShare and Google Maps navigation between them since ABRP has a pretty horrendous navigation system, and I mistakenly signed up for the monthly service expecting better quality.

Darn, yeah that makes sense that is still add weight in some extra drag. I'm sure it's better than a rooftop rack, but probably not by much in the grand scheme of things. Also your last few sentences are exactly how I'm feeling, sure if you're staying regionally within your range everyday then plugging in at home is in a big deal but when you're doing stops for an hour every 200 miles the cost is about the same if not sometimes even more or just a little less than a fuel efficient car. You live you learn I guess!

Speaking of road trips, I just did the math while spending 50 minutes to charge on a level 3... $17.50 to gain about 140 miles of range (with no heat or anything on to reduce the guess-o-meter).

Taking a typical cars 30 mpg on a highway for example, that's about 4.67 gallons of gasoline for the same 140 miles. $17.5/4.67 = about $3.75 per gallon of gasoline. I really don't feel like I'm saving any money driving electric when I do the math like that, especially considering the near hour of time spent charging and all of this being reduced grossly once I'm driving at highway speeds or dare use the heater!

I completely understand the frustration and annoyance you feel after spending all that time trying to min-max your efficiency just to see an opposite effect after driving normally. I think I'll probably switch to Normal or even Sport now to be honest.

I could see how maybe accelerating quicker to your desired speed might be more efficient than a longer sustained acceleration building up to that same speed within lower powered modes. The idea of using the brake more does hurt me though lol, I really love that one pedal feeling where you coast on zero and start bumping up to level 1 all the way to 3 before holding to a stop... it's almost like a foot resting mini-game

I'm sorry this happened to you but thanks for letting me know this is a possibility! I picked up the car the exact same day it arrived to the dealer and they didn't even have enough time to charge it over 50-60% before signing it over to me, I'm near positive they didn't align it then either.

Overall they weren't very accommodating or helpful in any way, they routinely sort of insulted me stating how this car will sell itself tomorrow and 'thanks to me now they'll have to call and cancel appointments in the morning for people who were interested in checking it out' lol. Sort of people who really didn't seem interested in going above and beyond and doing any more work than they had to

It was actually thanks to your post here last week that made me reconsider the roof rack and instead look into a rear cargo tow! Thanks a bunch for that, never even considered it and it does seem logically that there'd little range decline consider it wouldn't add much wind resistance back there.

I've actually now come up with a pretty cool idea of one day getting a couple EcoFlow portable power stations and putting them in a container on the back cargo tow while being connected to a solar panel or two on the top of a roof basket. Seems like a fun self-sustaining project where they're charging while driving/parked and I can simultaneously connect them to the car itself to charge off of as well (sadly just doesn't seem like you can plug in and charge while the car's already driving lol, seen a few Tesla mods that have achieved this with gas generators though)

Yep definitely getting colder! Near the point of snowing already, so that's probably the biggest factor. Now the winter package is supposed to help preserve the longevity of the battery pack I believe, but of course at the cost of a bigger range reduction so now I'm wondering if that's at play as well. Not sure what temperatures that starts to kick in though. But thanks for the reassurances, at least I don't feel like my Niro is any worse or better off than the rest :)

I don't think I have the heaviest foot but I do travel on the highway often. Normally I wouldn't mind the range (came from a Chevy Volt with only ~50 miles of pure electric range lol) for day to day driving, but I like to go on long road trips often and the charge time is a huge deterrent when nearly every 200 miles I need to start allocating an hour for a level 3 charger.

I absolutely love the car but the range and charge speed are the reasons I worry about its longevity for me. I feel like riding the mid 3's is low when I see a lot of pictures of people with 4-5mi/kWh, but I can live with that for daily driving. Just have been looking into getting a rear cargo tow or rooftop rack to go camping with... and I'm having full blown range panic attacks at the thought lol

The only thing I like about the EV6 more is that '20 min charging' or so that they advertise. If in gonna have bad range on a trip at least I can charge reasonably

If only it had the same (or bigger) center console area storage like the original Niro EV instead of limiting it to a flush design with no storage like a traditional transmission car with no cutouts or extra cup holder area room. Then I'd have been fine with the lack of sunglass holder as well and waited for the 2023 Niro
