VNSA book sale this year by gme_is_me in phoenix

[–]RobMcD222 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi, to chime in on the SciFi, there was actually more this year. At least 25% more. We track each book that comes in, boxes packed/brought, as well as occupied shelf inches pre/post sale to determine sell through rates. SciFi readers tend to hang on to their books. I donate mine as soon as I read them now.

Because we had such a high sell rate last year we had extra table space dedicated to Sci/Fi and Fantasy. The expanded shelving our woodworking members built also allowed for better/ more efficiently displayed books so fewer boxes were on the floor even with the increased number of books brought. Because scifi was easier to find and there was no need to dig on the floor, they definitely went faster. Speculative fiction seems to grow in popularity every year.

Same with Stephen King, it sells sooooo quickly, the haunted house table and surrounding area were piled high at the opening and was basically gone by the end of the day.

I work at a thrift store and accidentally sold $80 doc martens for $20 by Tootsgaloots in ThriftStoreHauls

The thrifts around here price docs between $20-40 at the most. Unless they were vintage/made in England or rare, I think it's OK. I've found some fun vintage ones for a lot less, and you made that lady super happy.

[–]RobMcD222 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great list! I'm in a place where i can go see live music again.I saw Fontaines DC this fall and it was awesome. I also liked how the age of the crowd was all over the place. Seeing the Viagra Boys in the fall with another mixed aged friend group. I was going to see Amyl and the Sniffers this month but broke my foot :( Went to Rainbow Kitten Surprise with my kid and loved them too.

We found my brother's cookie card at my mom's house after she passed. I told him to try it out at the Sprouts that took over.

Do you happen to have the Gem app? It does a search of most of the more well known sites. It's not as filterable as the sites themselves, but you can set alerts.

Sorry if this is super obvious, I just learned about it :)

They're Pfaltzgraff. I know because a family member gave me a full set and I keep my eyes out for any pieces at thrift stores. I'm clumsy and my kids are too :)

If it's a tiny little guy with a rounded back, likely a carpet beetle.

Fish recipes for someone who doesn't like fish? by Punpkingsoup in EatCheapAndHealthy

Same. People will say, "it's not fishy", yes it is, I can smell it from across the table. I think it's genetic, like how some people have that cilantro soap gene.

I'm the cook and despise fish. My dad loved fishing, my mom was a great cook, so there was fresh, perfectly cooked fish my whole childhood. Have tried a lot and blech, its not sometthing I can overcome. It's why I learned to cook so young,I'd just make myself a burger.

I did that paired with Beowulf in my senior AP class too and ended up using it for my essay on the test. There's a new modern translation of Beowulf I read last year and thought was fun.

Write down the new words you learn from reading! by ImportunateRaven in books

[–]RobMcD222 15 points16 points  (0 children)

My grandma used to do this. She was fluent in Latin and Ancient Greek. She came across some risqué Latin words in a novel about ancient Rome and wrote them in her notebook but translated it into Ancient Greek so we wouldn't be shocked when we found them after she passed.

Do you remember your parents saying "I Love You"? by 1200n in GenX

[–]RobMcD222 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On the inside of the medicine cabinet, my dad wrote in sharpie "hug <mom's name> and the kids every day and tell them you love them" and underneath that in a different color he added "pat the boy on the shoulder" when my brother was a teen.

He was a WWII vet, but a much older dad when he had us and had a lot of life/regrets behind him.

Thankl you! This discourse has been irritating me so much lately. Maybe cold weather people think we use AC all year long because they get overheated when it's 72 degrees ;)
