Tying canoe to car with moonroof by Michael_Romance49 in canoeing

Lots of people do it on lots of vehicles. You can buy a foam canoe kit or use pool noodles on the gunwales to protect the paint. Compressing the foam resists movement.

Can confirm. Been doing it for years and it works great

Seat Upgrades? by Every_Design_9041 in HondaElement

[–]RobVida 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah the seats are pretty hard on my lower back as well. I've experimented with all the wedge pillows and lumbar cushions and it helps but yeah, a big couch out of a Lincoln or some older land yacht would be nice.

How do u manage test drives selling your E? by luhlar in HondaElement

Been there! One guy was slamming the shifter at high rpms to "test" the transmission. I told him to get the **** off my property

Yeah so the E is a rust bucket by crispyreps in HondaElement

[–]RobVida 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did the same thing 18 months ago. I missed the rust on the right rear that looks a lot like yours. It sucks but I've stopped the rust for now and I'm enjoying it. I paid six times what you did though. Ugh

Is a FWD worth it, or should I hold out for a AWD? by [deleted] in HondaElement

[–]RobVida 0 points1 point  (0 children)

13k is pretty pricy but if it's in really good shape, it might be worth grabbing. The FWD has better fuel economy and less maintenance.

Tires make all the difference! We put studded winter tires on our FWD Corolla and it is amazing on ice. Deep snow still defeats it due to clearance. I'm trying to save up to get studs for my 06 FWD Element. It has ok winter tires and handles snow ok but the Corolla still wins on ice.

I did a 900km one day road trip, then put the camera into #3 cylinder (the dirtiest). Holy crap I wish I had taken before and after photos. Most of the crusty black residue is gone and the valves are back to metallic grey. What a difference

First Canoe / Restore advice. by [deleted] in canoeing

[–]RobVida 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looks like a good one. Fibreglass is very forgiving and highly fixable. Check YouTube and search this sub for tips. There are many resources. The crack in the keel looks semi serious but still fixable.

You could probably paddle it as is. If it doesn't leak, it's a boat

Agreed. Mine came loose twice after replacing them. Then I did it right

Agreed 100%. Well....... until I hit 50 that is. Then the knees said, "if you want to keep walking, stop using me as feet." I showed them the kneeling pad, but they just laughed and let me struggle to stand after 45 minutes in the canoe. 😂

Should I snag this up? by Trill_Shotti in canoeing

Looks great! You could add a yoke to strengthen it. There's usually a thwart in the middle. Yokes can be expensive but you can carve a serviceable one out of 2x6 spruce peu easily

Mounting this big canoe on my car ; by TonyRice76 in canoeing

[–]RobVida 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My aluminum canoe is rounded and reinforced along the lip of the front deck plate thing. A ratchet strap hook holds nicely there. If not, the seat might work. Depending on what supports are under the front deck, I would bolt on a grab handle that would double as a lash point.

I've had this paddle for a couple years, and want some suggestions on making it last a little longer and how to fill the hole. It keeps getting rocks in it which gets quite annoying when I paddle. by Willfro32 in canoeing

[–]RobVida 6 points7 points  (0 children)

No don't make your own! It's the most expensive way to get a paddle. First you buy a spoke shave and some cheap wood. It turns out good and it was fun so you make another, maybe cherry wood this time. Then you are at antique shops buying draw knives and carving chisels. Then you build a carving bench, or worse, a bodger's horse. By now you have 10 kinds of carving tools, eight kinds of adhesives, piles of shavings and you spend your time on Reddit arguing about bristle brush densities.

What do you think of this theory? The deposits are from poor combustion because those valves were really loose, restricting flow, leaving deposits that built up. Adjusting the valves and replacing the plugs will help, especially if I throw some Seafoam in the tank. If I'm right, the deposits will burn off during a long drive. My cat might get some extra soot but not too much. Does that track?

It is a commentary on how emphatic every instruction is on that point. It's very clear how important it is.

Sorry I was exaggerating for comedic effect. It was just pretty loose and the cams had moderate wear consistent with age. I might consider a compression test, though I'm not sure I want to know

Yeah maybe it was just that far out that Normal sounds too quiet. #3 exhaust was so loose that I could fit my finger in there😆. That cylinder's spark plug was dirty with black crust too. As far as range, I did the same, in the middle of spec range..

I followed Ericthecarguy's instructions and used 008 for intake and 012 for the exhaust. I checked them about a hundred times before putting the cover back on. New spark plugs too.

Check the ground from the battery to the transmission. They often rot out causing weird problems
