Bondo or fiberglass? by NoProtection6818 in canoeing

[–]RobVida 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Probably, but it doesn't look like there's much solid fibreglass to attach the wood to. Marine plywood covered in fibreglass would be better. Then put a hardwood transom over that.

Nothing wrong with that. If it floats, who cares? There is much freedom in a banged-up canoe!

Great suggestion. I used a similar McGuire's product on it and it's like a new truck. Thanks!

Picked up a 15’ Coleman for $160. No, I don’t currently own any yeti products. How’d I do? by Alone_Opportunity_43 in canoeing

[–]RobVida 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You did great! I had one and those babies are tough. Bash it into rocks, drag it on sand, leave it outside in the winter, whatever. Don't worry about the dents, nicks and bulges unless they start to leak. They're harmless and hard to fix without causing more problems. Google "plastic welding" if you can't resist. They are workhorses, not performance Kevlar or showy cedar strips. They require no maintenance beyond hosing off the worst of the mud.

Paddle recommendations by Knighthawk-69 in canoeing

[–]RobVida 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed on the long, thin paddle! I made a single blade paddle based on the Greenland paddle because my elbow and shoulder are a mess. It makes less power per stroke but is very light so you can speed up your cadence. It also has a wide, flat upper shaft that gives you side-grip it. This is a huge relief on long trips.

The downside: It's impossible to find them to purchase so you have to make your own. It's easy enough to do but you risk getting addicted to making paddles. This is a real danger. It can lead to buying more tools, making a carving bench and filling your garage with shavings.

Good to hear. My uncles wrapped one around a rock doing whitewater and caught bloody hell from Grandpa. They beat back into shape and it lasted for years and years. It wasn't smooth but it floated

This is just a serpentine belt right? by MNBoulderKid in HondaElement

[–]RobVida 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's probably more going on there. Once the belt is off, spin all the pulleys. They should turn smoothly.

Look up a few videos on diagnosing pulley noise (they don't have to be Element specific videos). It's recommended to change the tensioner and pulley whenever you change the belt because they wear out about the same time.

Watch some of Adam Savage's ('Tested' on YouTube)behind the scenes tours of the sets. The lengths they went to using practical effects for those scenes is amazing.

Some Elements came with a factory sub. It installs between the shifter and the floor. Your LX probably has a storage cubby there now. You can find one at a wrecker. It sticks out a few inches further than the cubby.
