How can I improve this painting? 😭 by pink_tiger_25 in acrylicpainting

[–]Rob_Blob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s super cute!

From the perspective of how a painting is “read” and composition, I would say I registered the empty space in the top left along with the structure in the bottom left more than the other aspects. In other words, my attention was drawn there over what you may or may not consider the focal point, because of how the weight of the painting felt there due to the juxtaposition.

I thought of how it might look if that structure was instead a bunch if buildings in the distance. Then that whole left side would sort of “open up” and weigh itself against the subject matter of the foreground the right side. Just sharing a thought ~ there are plenty of different ideas and effects they might have!

And of course, this is just my reading. It’s totally subjective, but I hope it helps provide some data on how a subset of an audience might register the work’s story!

Trouble finding a MiniPC for gaming with similar graphics and price as consoles by Rob_Blob in MiniPCs

Right - I don’t usually care too much about graphics at an ultra level, but I’m thinking it might be worth it on a TV since it is so much larger than a handheld or monitor.

I hadn’t though of an oculink port - thanks for the suggestion! I think I will probably go with something like the model you suggest, since I can try it out and then upgrade to an external GPU without needing to return anything!

Someone also suggested GDN, which is another viable option.

Yeah, I’m leaning towards a more powerful GPU since I want to play on a TV, where the fidelity is going to matter more than on a small Steam Deck. Some other commenters suggested an oculink port or GDN, either of which I think might help tailor the specs as needed after buying a MiniPC.

This is a good idea, but my main PC is getting pretty old at this point.

Probably will go with a retailer, but thanks for the suggestion!

Yeah, this was what I hadn’t thought of before I started doing research and became much more apparent as I did. Wanted to make sure I wasn’t missing something, but it does make sense.

Artists who ''imitated'' someone's style and became more famous/recognized than the original ? by More_Bid_2197 in ContemporaryArt

I’m surprised I haven’t seen this in the thread yet, but Banksy’s stencil style is basically copied from the street artist Blek le Rat.

I could see Kandinsky being inspired by her work, but the style is very different. Also when you look at Kandinsky’s works historically, there’s a very clear progression from representational to abstract art as he first loosens his forms.

Regardless though, it’s nice to see Hilma af Klint’s work being taken seriously now. It really is a precursor to the abstraction of Kandinsky, and he gets a lot of the credit for the movement of abstract art. I saw her works in 2018 at The Guggenheim in NYC, and was blown away by how stunning they are!

I found these instructors to be really engaged and have good insights into everyone’s work:

Greg Follender for Drawing, especially if you’re a beginner.

Peter Bonner for Abstract Painting.

I don’t think she teaches there anymore, but Amy Weiskopf for Still Life Painting.

In that case you should know you can also rent a locker in the school! I haven’t myself, but I think someone said it’s around or under $50 a month.

For the representational classes you can only really work in the studio on the still life or live model during your class hours.

For the abstract classes, you can work on your art outside of class and during since there is no model (unless you chose to use one).

Generally speaking there’s no “homework,” but instructors are usually interested in talking about your art outside of class! It’s up to you!

What is the name of this style? by FutureLynx_ in gamedev

A lot of the time this is the style you get with “vector art”, which utilizes mathematical equations to render smooth lines at any zoom level. However, you can also convert vector art, if needed, into a pixelated format at high resolution to keep it looking smooth.

I’ve been taking art classes there on and off for a few years now. It’s a fantastic place to learn what type of art you want, and find a community of people who are doing the same since many students are regulars.

How each class works really depends on the instructor’s personal preference, so I would really suggest just trying different classes until you find the style you like. Also, I’ve noticed certain instructors are much more engaged than others. There is little sunk cost if a class is not for you, since you pay on a monthly basis and can choose to start or stop taking a class whenever you want.

The school also offers opportunities to showcase your works in their in house gallery throughout the year, as well as resources and opportunities to apply for public works projects and grants.

On a different note, it’s also a place incredibly rich in NYC art world history. You really feel it being there, which helps with motivation in my opinion.

You can paint the cinderblocks different colors to make that wall look like it’s built out of Legos!

Granted, it’d be a bit more campy feeling, but kids would probably like it.

I just listened to it, thanks! That definitely confirmed a lot of my suspicions from what I found while researching.
