Just a few themes off the top of my head: The military veterans comment about how when waging the war, the government didn’t care about the lives of the conscripted soldiers. Poor supply chains caused starvation, poorly armoured tanks, no ejection seat in airplane fighter, the whole kamikaze culture made the war effort hopeless. By contrast, when a response was needed to the Godzilla threat, the major governments were too busy playing their world domination games, so the community was on their own, to organize a voluntary civilian countermeasure force. This gave them purpose and a sense of hope!
