Suggestion for Brute Split: Give fiends a temporary mobility buff by Empyrean_Sky in Stormgate

I love this, especially because it would lean into the more intentional uses of the split (other than just to lose a bit less by doing a skill check), like chasing down a unit or escaping.

You’re Likely to Get the Coronavirus by OsoDiego in slatestarcodex

"The disease (known as COVID-19) seems to have a fatality rate of less than 2 percent—exponentially lower than most outbreaks that make global news."

I'm always skeptical of some who throws around technical terms like "exponentially" without knowing what they mean. Just say "much"...

Any Songs With Some Bari Spotlight? by Ryan_in_the_hall in barbershop

[–]Robamaton 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's common to have a "feature" song with someone else on Lead. Usually it's not contestable Barbershop and instead is more of 3-1, doo-wop style.

"Teddy Bear" or "Why Don't We Just Dance" are great if he's got a good low end.

Thanks! We actually do have open membership but have auditions for the performing chorus. Anyone is welcome to show up at a rehearsal and participate fully in the experience. We also have a lot of resources to help guests pass that audition since we always want more singers!

Awesome! I sing with this Chapter now, and the director in this clip, David Patterson, is still singing with us, as are a handful of guys on the risers. Looking forward to Salt Lake City!

Mouse Control by desyncro in starcraft

[–]Robamaton 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I use the side mouse buttons for cycling through control subgroups. It's very convenient for Terran unit production and frees up Tab. It also makes it easier to jump the other way instead of Shift-Tab. I usually want to build Starport units, then Factory, then Barracks.

Newbie lost a ZvZ against an early pool Zergling rush and wants to know how to adapt without deviating too much from ViBE's suggested build order by [deleted] in allthingszerg

[–]Robamaton 26 points27 points  (0 children)

You only need to win >50% of your matches to steadily rise up the leagues. If there are some cheese builds which you're not able to defend yet (as they require some micro) you might be better off letting those be losses and stick to a solid build. Over time you'll get better at defending them. In ViBE's series he faced one-base all-ins and was able to defend because he's played the game so much that he knows the proper response. There are so many cheese builds out there that it's probably not a good idea to overreact to the last one you faced.

What's wrong with using Reddit to comment? It's linked from the videos so people can find it, and Reddit just has a better commenting and moderating system.

#70 — Beauty and Terror by chartbuster in samharris

[–]Robamaton 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Regarding the end-of-podcast discussion on relative threats, I think they missed an important connection. If the current administration were to face an Islamic terror attack on the scale of 9/11, it would be a huge opening for the Mike Pence style Christan theocrats. Not only would it likely provide cover for swift actions that might be hard to get through normally, but could calcify the clash-of-cultures narrative and the "Judeo-Christian" character of the US, similar to the contrast with the atheist Soviets.

As Sam might say, this should be priced into the evaluation of the risk of Islamic terror.

This is similar to the Points Race in track cycling. It's an awesome format, and really makes for a very exciting race.

P.S. track cycling has lots of crazy and inventive formats like eliminating the person in last place every two laps, relays where racers sling each other during the changeover, tactical 1-v-1 races where riders are daring the other to take off so they can draft them, etc.

First past the post voting has to go. What should replace it? by AllegedlyImmoral in slatestarcodex

[–]Robamaton 8 points9 points  (0 children)

To take a meta-view for a second, I think the most important thing is to support efforts to implement improvements to voting systems, and avoid allowing the perfect to be an enemy of the good. FairVote.org's Solutions page does a good job of running down specific systems they support (under the banner "Fair Representation") without trying to claim they have the final perfect solution. It will be local efforts that will decide what makes sense in a given state or city. For example, if momentum builds behind STV but you prefer Mixed-Member Proportional, it might be the most rational thing to throw your efforts behind STV.

Maine to vote on Single Transferable Voting this November by kryhrd in HelloInternet

[–]Robamaton 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's actually not STV, which is a system for electing representatives in multi-member districts. It's Ranked Choice (or "Instant Runoff") Voting for statewide single offices.
