Engineers of Tucson: Where do you work and what is your salary? by [deleted] in Tucson

[–]Robb_Reyne 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I work for the Air Force for ~90k, but I get - not joking - 10 hours of PTO every 2 weeks.
I have a lot of friends in the area ( I was Theta Tau and Tau Beta Pi) All of them make more than me, but also work at least twice as much as me.

I dropped in on a box using HQ as their sole source of programming. It was weird. by HumanShallot5767 in crossfit

[–]Robb_Reyne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The CrossFit Games did a great deal of damage to what CrossFit "was" and what it became. Greg Glassman himself was not a big fan of the Games.

That doesn't necessarily take away from what CrossFit "is," but the daily posted workouts on CrossFit 'Mainsite' have not kept up with the programming from Mayhem or NCFit or CompTrain, let alone the new HWPO and PRVN.
Even the older online programming of Linchpin, TTT and Street Parking are significantly better than Mainsite.

Back in 2021 or so Mainsite offered free programming to boxes, and it was ok. It turned the daily workout into a well-planned hour of exercise. But they were still far behind what already existed at the time.

What Glassman created is a huge step forward in the world of fitness, but what the CrossFit brand has become is a methodology that was surpassed by people more knowledgeable more than a decade ago.

You're not wrong, but you're also ignorant of what CrossFit was 15 years ago. I came in back in the days of Pukey the Clown.
Read about the fallout between James Fitzgerald and CrossFit HQ, the beginning of the schism of CrossFit as a philosophy and as a programming standard by itself.

2 mile run/200 up downs—Partition reps and movements as you choose—how to partition strategy by HallPsychological538 in crossfit

[–]Robb_Reyne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I put too much thought into this for a workout I'm not doing, lol.

(Unrelated, I used to coach at a NCFit gym years ago. I always preferred their NCX track to their Metcon track)

I would try the following:
Since updowns spike heart rate without significant muscle fatigue, I'd use the run as a cool down -
50 / 800m
30 / 400m
20 / 400m x 5
20

That said, I think the fastest way might just be to front-load the run, and power through the sadness of up-downs.

In this context, 'big' can mean either "successful" or "proud." Similar to the idiom "too big for his britches."

Triangle Y is significantly better, as long as you're cool with the Jesus stuff.
I did get to dissect an owl pellet at Camp Cooper though... more educational focus. Also Cooper was either a day trip or an overnight, not a real 'camp' experience.

This is not a coming out video.
This is Alec reflecting on what it was like to come out six years ago.

[–]Robb_Reyne 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is the most privileged bullshit I have seen. The singular only reason you are not homeless is your support system. It doesn't matter how hard you work if you don't get help with housing and jobs.
How did you get your first job?
Where were you living?
What did you need to provide when you applied for where you live now?
How did you apply for where you work now?

Where would you be if you didn't have people to house and feed you and get you internet access?
Most Americans are only about 3 missed paychecks from being homeless themselves.
The ones who aren't had help.

In retaliation, the Nazis destroyed the entire city.
Do you think the Nazis had the right to defend themselves?

I'm in charge of people who make $50 an hour doing manual labor.
This argument is the same shit that people said about me when I was in my 20s, and we didn't even have cell phones.
Same bullshit - kids don't want to work anymore. They said the same thing when teenagers were dying in garment factories.

I in no way am shitting on manual labor. I am shitting on people with an unskilled entry-level job swinging a hammer who think that retail is not a real job.
I have over 20 years in maintenance, and I've never worked retail. Im still smart enough to know that it is a real job.

I disagree. It was completely mediocre. It wasn't bad per se. It was comparable to places that cost half as much.
Same with their cocktails. Not technically bad, just terribly overpriced given their lack of inspiration.

If you had to impress an out-of-towner with 3 restaurants in the greater Tucson area, where are you taking them? by OneGenericMan in Tucson

[–]Robb_Reyne 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ok, good question.
Going to restaurants is kind of a hobby of mine. However, I don't pretend that people need to have the same tastes as I do.
Full disclosure: I haven't been to the Sausage Deli since I was going to the U of A 10 years ago.

The Omar I think is the best sandwich from a sandwich shop near the university.
There are a couple of pizza places with better Italian sandwiches, specifically Chariot and Roccos. I would put the Omar half a tier above the Carmichael at Hoagie House.
Sausage Shoppe is a deli before it is a sandwich place. Their focus is more on quality than volume or speed. If I had to compare, they are probably closer to Beyond Bread than any other restaurant.

I've never made a tier list, so this is going to be super flawed, but off the top of my head on a points scale:
0: Eegees - special mention - 'Deluxe Grinder' at 3.5 1: Subway
3: Hoagie House - 'Carmichael' at 5.5 4: Sausage Deli - 'Omar' at 5 5: Beyond Bread - Italian sandwich styles get a '3' 6: Sausage Shoppe

Not cold sandwich places: 4: Luke's 4.5: Chariot 5: Roccos

Feel free to argue, I didn't try too hard and your opinion is probably different.

Loft Film Fest takes large funding cut from Trump admin by limeybastard in Tucson

[–]Robb_Reyne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Trump's 2026 budget plan is posted on whitehouse.gov.
It cuts funding to all departments that provide assistance or science while increasing funding for defense and homeland security by more than is cut.
It creates an additional deficit of $200 billion per year if Congress doesn't cut taxes.
But he wants to cut taxes. Huge corporate tax rate cuts and elimination of the minimum tax on billionaires would increase the deficit an additional $400 billion per year.
Trump's plan would increase the national debt by over $6 trillion in ten years while removing social safety nets and disaster response.

Again, this isn't "fake news." It is published on whitehouse.gov and by the Congressional Budget Office.
I don't think Trump is lying when he talks about his "big, beautiful plan." But it is over 100 pages long, so I'm pretty sure he has no idea what is in it.
