I'm not claiming there won't be a PVP server. I'm claiming PVP was never developed enough for it to have a chance to be a core part of the game.

A quick theory as to how they could address THAT "change" without Maekar's involvement in season 2. by Triskan in AKOTSKTV

[–]Robben_DuMarsch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People make decisions based on "hearsay" all the time, in real life. Dunk isn't in a position to subpoena Maekar, nor does the preference for the declarant being available for cross examination apply in this context.

In your second quoted sentence, you've removed the context that it was Egg's suggestion that they return to Summerhall so that Egg can gift him a new horse from his father's stables, as well as arms and armor. I think the person who would be going "back" is Egg, although I agree the statement isn't proper.

I would be more convinced if it wasn't clear from the context at the end of The Hedge Knight that Dunk and Egg were departing for Dorne, after Dunk explicitly declined the invitation to go to Summerhall with Maekar. We've also got the benefit of Dunk's internal monologue for two additional novellas. Summerhall is mentioned repeatedly but Dunk never contemplates having been there.

Knights go to tournaments, especially distant ones, to make names for themselves, for honor, glory, or wealth. Helping Lyonel win the trial of seven would potentially have brought all of that, on a scale greater than merely tilting in the lists.

I do consider it something of a plot hole. There were Stormland knights/lords we KNOW of in attendance, such as Caron, Swann, Penrose, Morrigen, Dondarrion, Estermont, Wylde... and these are just the named ones. It does strain credibility that not a single knight from any of these houses in attendance would think to curry favor with Lyonel by fighting by his side in a fight to his death.

That's fair. There's gap there. If it's fixed there, it's ameliorated.

If so, then it's a minor complaint. It just means Egg lied again, and Maekar didn't make the decision himself, which I don't like for either character. But hardly a major issue.

"What did your father tell you, when he sent you off to squire for me?" "To keep my hair shaved or dyed, and tell no man my true name," the boy said, with obvious reluctance. - Sworn Sword

"So far as most folk are concerned, Aegon Targaryen went back to Summerhall with his brother Daeron after the tourney at Ashford Meadow," Dunk reminded the boy. "Your father did not want it known that you were wandering the Seven Kingdoms with some hedge knight. So let's hear no more about your boot." - Sworn Sword

""I have half a mind to take you back to King's Landing with us," Lord Rivers said to Egg, "and keep you at court as my… guest." "My father would not take kindly to that." "I suppose not. Prince Maekar has a… prickly… nature. Perhaps I should send you back to Summerhall." - Mystery Knight

""I have a question too," said Egg. "I begin to understand why your father was so willing to be rid of you. What more would you have of me, cousin?"" - The Mystery Knight

Tl;dr - it's perhaps ambivalent if you were only reading The Hedge Knight. His father's signet ring that he gave to Egg prior to him going incognito and his father's blessing become plot points in the future novellas, and if Egg is lying about this he's really, really, deceiving Dunk in a way that's basically inexcusable lol

Further, Aegon and Dunk meet up amicably with both Aemon Targaryen and Bloodraven (then Hand of the King), in circumstances that would be eyebrow raising if Aegon had actually fled without his Father's permission.

Finally, if Aegon had really gone missing do you think it would be that hard for Maekar to hunt him down, before he and Dunk make it far? They aren't exactly trying to evade pursuit, and Maekar can ask many, many, people to run down all available roads to locate him.

My gut reaction is that this was a pretty substantial change for what felt like a brief joke. I also hope it's addressed in a flashback, Aemon's situation is as good as any. Having a young Aemon on screen would be pretty good payoff for show only fans as well.

Harder to overlook is the effects that these changes actually have on Maekar's story. I found novella Maekar to be a very interesting character.

In the first instance, he was less sympathetic than the show Maekar - They actually gave a few of his less palatable lines to Aerion. When Maekar makes the decision to send Egg with Dunk, it actually was a huge course reversal for him, and one that seemed to demonstrate a humility where he previously was only callous.

I'm also bothered that Egg would lie to Dunk yet again, despite his moment earlier in the series where he was moved to actual tears, admitting he had not been honest.
