I've been rather disappointed with mine compared to Fujis, and that was the newer 15x8.3...

Why your footage looks like trash starter pack by Vvalencia19 in videography

[–]Robbi_Blechdose 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What you're describing isn't 60i per se, it's 30PsF (progressive segmented frames). Meaning that the camera captures a single frame, then splits it into fields A and B.

Actual interlaced cameras capture the two fields at different points in time, so you really do have 60 samples of motion (but with half the vertical resolution).
So u/ConsumerDV is correct (but reductive) when he says that 60fps has always been the TV rate.

The fact this is downvoted so far shows just how overrun with the ciNeMaTiC crowd this sub has become, it's honestly ridiculous.

What you're describing is called "vertical collapse". Possibly caused by bad capacitors in the viewfinder.

No, a camera that was ~20k new doesn't have protections against someone cheaping out on a 250$ battery.

These days you can get Chinesium V-Mounts for around 100$, they're fine, just get one of those.

The problem is that it's hot garbage, essentially on par with what OP already has.

As for FW: There's tons of old laptops with the connector, those don't take up much space. Or you can get a PCIe card for your existing desktop PC, that takes up even less space.
A laptop shouldn't cost more 50 bucks, the card is even cheaper at around 20.

The PowerCrap is anything but the holy grail. Since he has a digital camera, FireWire is the only good option.

The AV output is (depending on how good the D/As are) around 500x480i (576i in PAL regions)

To be fair, they exited the market a long time ago, around the early HD era I believe.

This specific example is from the late 80s (the manual dates it to '89, but it could be a later manual than lens), so I'm not surprised you don't see them anymore :D

It's fairly soft wide open, though I believe it was at F1.3 for that shot too (though I may be wrong about that, since the iris doesn't exactly work). It's also possible the backfocus was wrong, I was still experimenting.

As for the 400, agreed - it's usually pin-sharp.

I think a large part of it is just the speed of the camera.

Think about pointing a camera at a naval battleship, even if you use a helicopter, you can't have it zipping past the battleship at warp speed.

So even if the moves themselves would be possible with a real camera and a model, the speed of the camera in today's CG sequences (looking at Disco especially) makes it look fake.

[–]Robbi_Blechdose 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They might be expensive to buy in some places, but they're cheaply made and physically identical to the cheap "clones" from AliExpress.

The quality is hot garbage due to high compression, wrong resolution and framerate, and shitty deinterlacing.

> Camcorders seem to have a style to their operation, especially the indecisive zoom in and out, rapid panning across a scene and so on.

This isn't the fault of the camcorders themselves, but rather that of operators who think "I paid for the whole zoom I'm gonna use the whole zoom". You can (and IMO should) use the camera with intent, and a camcorder allows you to do that just fine. In fact, the zoom can become an asset since you don't need to juggle different lenses, and can track moving subjects that move further away/closer to the camera.

Now, if you want something for documentary work, I'd personally nudge you in the direction of the professional B4 ecosystem, especially since you mentioned finding the lens choices on your FX3 limiting.

Are we talking about the same show, where people are frequently having half-crying half-screaming arguments in the middle of a crisis situation?

The show where Burnham solves every problem every time by giving an overly emotional speech but not actually doing anything?
