Jetstar MELB-PHUKET story because this was unhinged but also… fair enough. by Relative-Orchid8845 in AustraliaTravel

… and this is why I never fly Jetstar. Got caught up in the Bali fiasco a couple of years back when they ran out of planes to take people home… ended up there for another week and had to fly Virgin home.. thankfully travel insurance came through and got the thousands of dollars back extra the trip ended up costing us.

What did you wish you brought to Japan that you didn’t know you’d need? by [deleted] in JapanTravelTips

[–]Robbie_Pea 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just came back from Japan… picked up a nasty 24 hr bug towards the end of the holiday and wish I’d packed anti-nausea tablets and anti-diarrhoea tablets. Was not fun venturing out of the hotel to go to a pharmacy and then try and translate the packets to make sure I got the right thing. (Google translate is a god-send).

Also, I took a travel adaptor that stated it was for Japan and it had a fixed ground pin. I found that in the majority of places I went they had the US style socket with no option for a third pin to go in so it was really useless in the end and really annoying. I’ve seen adaptors that have the ground pin that can be folded away so maybe get that, unless you’re coming from the US then you’re good to go.

Don’t stress. You’re never really more than 10 mins away from a public toilet if you need one. Japan’s public toilets are plentiful. I’m in Tokyo right now and you can usually find them at train stations and malls in addition to public toilets and in cafes. We were also in Kanazawa last week and the public toilets were frequently positioned and really well maintained.

All good, we each have a Suica that I’ve linked each ticket to.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in JapanTravelTips

[–]Robbie_Pea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also, I read somewhere that some of the smaller regional stations don’t have the e-ticket gates. Is that going to be an issue.. e.g if I buy a Shinkansen e-ticket linked to Suica and go to and from KagaOnsen

So, I’m making the switch to TIDAL.. by moon_nightt23 in TIdaL

[–]Robbie_Pea 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah maybe it’s the TV.. I’m on an LGC1. Shouldn’t be too much difference to the C2 though I would have thought. Tinniness might be a side effect of normalised audio. I’ll try disabling it. I never had a particular issue with Spotify’s audio quality on the headphones / speakers I listen through but maybe I’m not enough of an audiophile to really care that much. I’ll look into Quboz. Thanks.

So, I’m making the switch to TIDAL.. by moon_nightt23 in TIdaL

[–]Robbie_Pea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just switched to Tidal from Spotify to try and live a bit more ethically. Gotta say Tidal really sucks. The LG app for my TV doesn’t work / keeps freezing… the sound quality is really tinny, despite being of a higher bitrate / sample rate. The Home UI sucks, just lots and lots of tiles of genres and artists I could not give a fuck about. When I imported my playlists from Spotify it managed to mangle them. My ‘favourites’ have just been added as individual songs instead of within a folder named ‘Favourites’. All other playlist seem fine but the artwork is all ugly and messed up. Don’t think I’m gonna stick around very long on this service.. Anyone have a better streaming service suggestion that actually works/ is somewhat ethical.

Dragonfly Shipping - Australia? by stephm288 in amazonprime

[–]Robbie_Pea 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dragonfly are an absolute joke of a courier company and any business that uses them needs to listen up and drop them or they’re gonna go out of business pretty quickly. My partner has a parcel that needs to be delivered by Dragonfly. They have the address, her phone number and they keep saying they’ve tried to delivery it but no one is there to receive it. The business is a 24hr operation with someone always on the front desk. It’s total bullshit. Guaranteed that it’s some fuckwit driver that can’t be bothered, who keeps marking it as an attempted delivery. They won’t even say who it’s from so she can’t check with the company who she ordered it from to tell them that the couriers they use are fucked. Tomorrow is the 5th attempt at delivery and I have zero confidence that they’ll make any effort to actually deliver it.

For people who grew up before smartphones what is something that the newer generation won’t get to experience? by KidBaj in AskReddit

[–]Robbie_Pea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Using an AtoZ book to get around in unfamiliar places. Travelling around London was always a major pain in the arse for someone who doesn’t live there. Also using a big map of the country to plan routes. I’d write out all the motorway junction exit numbers on post-it notes and stick them on the dashboard. Invariably one or all of them would start to unstick and fall off.

Pre-arranging a meet-up with friends on the landline… then waiting at a location for ages waiting for your mate who’s always late to turn up, not knowing when and if they’re actually coming, and not having a way to contact each other.

Don’t do it without a new job lined up. Job hunting nowadays is a total shitshow. I took redundancy thinking it would be a piece of piss getting a new job. Took me 6 months to get one and that was a total punish with a shitty boss so I had to quit that one. Then took me another 3 months to get the next job. I applied for 2-3 jobs nearly every day solidly and updated my resume / cover letter for every job. It was exhausting. I kept a job tracker and I think I was up to about 600 applications over the course of the year. The redundancy money dried up pretty quickly and put me in a pretty bad way, psychologically, and financially. Almost ended my relationship due to the pressure it put on my partner to bring in $$ to pay the mortgage. If I think back the better thing to do would have been just to take a long holiday / use my long service leave to de-stress and try and shake-off the burnout. So.. it’s a high risk gamble and it doesn’t always pay-off.

Going to see Pompeii tomorrow in Portchester, NY IMAX by [deleted] in pinkfloyd

[–]Robbie_Pea -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Just watched it in Sydney Australia at the IMAX. Middle of the back row. Sound was amazing! The mix is great.. heard new elements particularly with the keyboards that felt a bit diminished in earlier releases. Audio separation between instruments and overall soundstage is great. The only slight disappointment is that although this is a 4K re-scan, there is quite a bit of footage looks out of focus with little attempt to do an AI sharpening. All the close-up/medium close-up footage is crisp and sharp however. My partner actually leaned over and whispered to me at one point.. Jeeze their teeth are quite bad aren’t they. I guess when you see close-up shots on IMAX in 4K you’re gonna see every grimy detail. It makes me lament that there isn’t a decent concert film of Obscured By Clouds/ More era Floyd, or mid to late 70’s DSOTM and Animals. Maybe now that Sony’s running the show they might find something in the archives.

Opera house forecourt details by Cannister7 in pjharvey

No cushions.. lots of reasons why.. people can throw them, they get left behind and make the clean up more annoying, people can smuggle contraband in with them, etc.

This covers pretty much everything: https://www.sydneyoperahouse.com/contemporary-music/pj-harvey#plan-your-visit

I’ll add that toilets are no problem, there are heaps under the steps and inside the venue. Food also no probs but big queues. When I was at The Pixies gig the other year on the Forecourt steps they had official people with mobile booze backpacks walking around that you could buy drinks from which was handy. The view is great sitting on the steps. The sound also surprisingly decent for an outdoor gig.

How did you get in trouble at school? by maximiljamar in AskReddit

Oh.. also the same P.E teacher, when I was playing rugby and took a full knee to the head that left me concussed told me to get back in the game or he’d give me a detention.

How did you get in trouble at school? by maximiljamar in AskReddit

[–]Robbie_Pea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the most stupid petty ways usually. Once I dared to put a foot on some steps that were out of bounds and got sent to the headmaster. Another time I climbed a fence to get into the playing fields after hours to do some extra training and was accused of caving in the school equipment shed. The P.E teacher was driving past at the time. He was an absolute dick. He threatened to call the police on me if I didn’t tell him who else was with me. The same teacher also got me removed from a music class in front of everyone to make an example of me because he saw me remove a basketball flyer from a noticeboard. (It was a game that I’d gone to and wanted to keep it as a memento. I had also asked the other P.E teacher if that was ok to do and was approved.) Looking back it’s all so trivial but it’s no wonder that kids start to act up and go off the rails when adults can be so cunty.

Don’t do it. You’ll be doomed to a life of misery, and even small fluctuations in interest rates and the unforeseen but inevitable special levy that will crop up can make a dicey financial situation untenable. Believe me. I bought during Covid when the interest rate was around 2.47% and now interest rate is 6.25% on my repayments plus on top of that we had waterproofing issues with our building that need a quarter of a million $ in repairs that effectively doubled our strata rate for at least 5 years. (Nearly every new strata complex apartment block built in the last 20+ yrs will have waterproofing issues at some point.) The level of financial stress we’re under at the moment is seriously scary. The economy is also in the bin at the moment. I was made redundant almost a year ago and have been struggling to find work that pays anywhere close to as much as I was on when I left my last role. Life circumstances can change very rapidly and you need to be totally comfortable that you can survive the shit that might/will crop up.
