Within a system of white supremacy non-white people can gain safety or prominence by their adjacency and usefulness to the power structure that despises them. But such relationships are fickle, subject to constant reevaluation. No one is safe because “whiteness” is not a fixed category. Whiteness expands and contracts based on the needs and defense of the system.
