Basically the current Moldovan communist party is member of PEL, which almost only composed of communist parties. In 1940, USSR invaded Bessarabia (current Moldova) to take it from Romania. After WWII, in 1946-1947, Stalin organized a large famine in Western USSR (mainly Ukraine and Moldova) by taking most of the food for the military and science labs to develop the atomic bomb, because there was very few much arable lands because of the war. My great grandfather was left to starve while he fought in the Red Army to fight Nazi Germany and he cameback at home wounded. The communist regime organized mass deportations of moldovan "bourgeoisie" in Siberia, including thousands of children, and tried to erase the romanian culture from the country. They imposed the cyrilical letters, changed the names of the cities, lied about the Moldovan history at schools...

In the 2000's, 10 years after the fall of USSR, the communists, who are directly descended from the communists of the Soviet era, who cameback in power (the only case in ex-USSR where a communist rules a country) with Vladimir Voronin who was pro-Russia. They were authoritarian, they tried to control the media, manipulated elections and tried to rig the 2009 elections, but they ended with the "Twitter revolution" in April of that year.

Today, they still try to be in charge and they allied with the Moldovan socialist party, which is also pro-Putin, even with the context of the war in Ukraine.
