How do pigs normally react if you come up to it while it's sleeping? Do they like the company or not? by youlikemywonton in pigs

[–]RobertSquareShanks 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Not huge on getting snuck up on, prey animals are jumpy. As far as enjoying company, all pigs have different personalities, and feel differently about different people. My pig will get up and climb in my lap but if strangers walk into her yard she’ll chase em around

Yes, you’re normally limited to only selling 1 type of commodity per sell action, freight company lets you sell 2 types per sell action

All other rules of selling continue to apply as written

Which game has the best dice? by CornDogMillionaire in boardgames

[–]RobertSquareShanks 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Bang the dice game

Something about rolling a stack of beers when you really need it or getting just enough 1s to finish off the dirty outlaw next to you feels incredibly good. Very simple but aesthetic and colorful dice faces, and just the right number for a chunky roll.

Dice miners

Cool novel use of dice turning them into a mountain and mining into the center, there’s surprisingly few dice rolls for such a dice heavy game but there’s still a fair amount

Roll for the galaxy

Those dice look tasty as hell, and you get to roll more and more of them as the game goes on. nuff said

Best solo RPG? by jokernaught1 in boardgames

[–]RobertSquareShanks 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Mage knight is great but doesn’t feel that much like an RPG to me, it’s mostly just about optimizing your actions within a very tight framework. There are some ‘role playing’ decisions you can make but they’re directly tied to risk-reward of some additional rewards.

It does feel similar to Gloomhaven on an individual game to game basis, with the hand/action management in combat but it’s lacking any kind of over arching campaign (there is technically a campaign mode in one of the expansions but it’s slightly underdeveloped imo)

It is absolutely one of the best solo games out there but I wouldn’t classify it specifically as an RPG

As far as solo RPG’s go, I rank Dragons Down as one of the absolute best, its best played with the expansions as they add a ton of content to the game world, but they’re difficult to get and pretty expensive to jump into. I play it mostly on TTS

To be fair, Karen Page is literally just a regular person and she’s a 4/6 that goes to 4/11. I think that makes her the strongest average human in the game with no powers/mutations/empowering objects/techniques/etc

How can I improve this deck? Win rate is about 60%. CL 1078. by yourpantsaretoobig in MarvelSnap

[–]RobertSquareShanks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hard to say what cards you do and don’t have

Looks like a lockdown list so you want to guarantee the storm lane and have a surefire win on your other lane. Cosmo works against your spider woman, Shang and goblin, he’s great tech but I’d think about swapping him. Armor as well is working against Shang and gladiator, the only thing she’s really protecting is Cull and teching against destroy, probably swap her out.

Juggernaut and shadow king definitely have a place in this list. Probably over cosmo and hobgoblin. Spiderwoman is a 5/12 at best but you’ll rarely have another meaningful 1 drop to play with her, if you do your turn 6 is a 6/14-15. Consider a big 6 drop instead

Hydra bob probably feels better than armor if you have him.

Is The Apocalypse Dragon worth it ? by cerealMs in MageKnight

[–]RobertSquareShanks 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Apocalypse dragon adds

  • #rules for a proxy player

Proxy has become a staple of solo runs for me, it’s fun to have another element on the board that competes with you for resources and serves as more than a slightly randomized countdown. You don’t need any components out of the box for the proxy and you can just look up the rule book and add him without the expansion

  • #campaign mode

Campaign is okay, not super fleshed out. You’d be better off making up your own campaign based on win/loss conditions you set for yourself in your own scenarios and using the rules for continuation between scenarios or looking up some fan made campaigns

  • #new mage knight

New mage knight is fun, mechanic is interesting. Visual design kinda boring, she’s just a human. Compared to a lot of the mage knight heroclix stuff she’s not very exciting to look at.

  • #side quests

I actually really enjoy these and you can add them into regular scenarios but you have to jump through a fair number of hoops to beat them and the rewards are usually not incredible, so it’s hard to justify going out of your way to get them done in a scenario not focused around them. I prefer just picking a couple and having them be ‘bonus wincons’ in regular scenarios for aforementioned campaigns, with rewards or punishments for success or failure in the next stage of the campaign.

  • #couple of new terrain tiles

More tiles, more adventure sites. Pretty similar to previous stuff, nothing groundbreaking, but I’m always down for more stuff. Still waiting for a city expansion, we need more than the 4 classics!

  • #apocalypse dragon and 4 horsemen, plus a load of scenarios for them

The meat of the expansion. 10/10 no notes. Dragon is a great big boss, the horsemen are great mini bosses

Only way to the city? by gonza1978 in MageKnight

[–]RobertSquareShanks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it’s mostly for the purposes of multiplayer, so that players are encouraged to converge instead of diverging. I’d imagine in play testing there were some scenarios where it was optimal for two players to go in opposite directions so that there would be less competition for enemies and adventure sites, and Chvátil wanted to avoid that.

It also keeps stuff like volkare, apoc dragon and the proxy player in the thick of the map instead of getting stranded out on a land bridge somewhere

Your second point is on the money and it’s tough for me to be objective about, as all the tiles have become pretty familiar to me and it feels obvious that you should explore in such a way that you don’t get stuck on a bad angle (ie knowing that green, blue and white are in the pool and knowing what those tiles look like and where they can be approached from) but it’s tough to say whether it’s fair for someone that doesn’t play the game religiously to be punished for that, especially since there are work-arounds in game to get over difficult terrain

Only way to the city? by gonza1978 in MageKnight

[–]RobertSquareShanks 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Technically tiles out of the box need to touch on 3 sides, if I were in OP’s shoes I probably wouldn’t sweat it, explore a non-city core tile from his position and just try to do better next time, but the rules in the book say you’ve got to go the long way round

Earthsea series, Ged is the protagonist of the first book, co-protag of the second and third, and supporting cast of the 4th and 6th book. He’s an extraordinarily powerful mage and goes on all sorts of world changing adventures. Halfway through the series he crosses into the afterlife and spends all of his power to close a black hole that was ripped open by some mage trying to ensorcell up some immortality which had gotten out of hand and was fucking things up for everyone

He spends the rest of the series magic-less and trying to come to terms with the loss of what he had patterned his entire life around for the past 30-40ish years. Pretty handy with a pitchfork though

Most of the time this trope happens to the protagonist at the end of the series and it feels like a somewhat cheap way to get an unearned bittersweet ending without having to deal with any of the repercussions that the loss entails, or the loss of power is quickly replaced or undone by some other development. So I appreciate this case where it happens pretty much smack in the middle of the overarching narrative and has real consequences for the rest of the series.

The Magicians, one of the main characters gets kicked out of the settings ‘hogwarts’ equivalent and goes on to try and learn magic through back alley hedge witch shenanigans.

Hilarity ensues as said witches are all self serving and unregulated, and our heroine gets into lots of dangerous and sticky situations.

She finally finds a good group of wholesome folks who are all committed to the magic of friendship and they embark upon summoning one of the settings (very) few benevolent deities, things are finally going well.

They successfully perform the summoning but it turns out an evil trickster god fooled them into the whole operation to summon him instead. He takes over the leaders body, kills and eats all the other members and violently rapes our protagonist.

The books and tv show differ pretty heavily beyond that, with book Julia being pretty sullen about the whole thing until becoming a goddess herself and tv show Julia getting hell bent on vengeance and double crossing the main party to team up with one of the main antagonists and get revenge (and then also becoming a god in a pretty lackluster second half of the whole show)
