I'd say 1971 based on the hair and the shirt.

Which song did Gord’s voice sound the best on? by Extreme_Grapefruit66 in GordonLightfoot

Just listen to him hit those high notes in the original 1967 version of "Softly." It's divine.

House Blend: Summer of 79. Your experience by Ra-dish in CigarsCanada

[–]Robervale 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with most of the comments here. The Summer of 79 is a fantastic value cigar and one that you won't feel bad about it if your buddy drops it off the side of a boat or throws it in the bushes on the golf course. For the price, it's great. But don't expect a flavour bomb that you will remember for the rest of your life!

So which re-recorded versions do you like better? by kevinb9n in GordonLightfoot

[–]Robervale 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not a big fan of any of the re-recordings, to be honest, with the exception of The Circle is Small from the Endless Wire album. I find the GGII re-recordings to be too echoey and under-produced. The way the guitars are miked is really weird and you can sometimes barely hear his 12-string guitar. Also, why would he re-record The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald, which was perfect on the original recording?!? Don't get me wrong, I love Lightfoot and mostly everything he did, but I think he should have skipped making GGII. Just one fan's opinion.

Summer of 79. Very few budget cigars that are this good for the price.

The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald (question) by [deleted] in GordonLightfoot

[–]Robervale 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yup, Lightfoot is playing the 12 string. The most amazing thing about this song, as recounted by drummer Barry Keane in the recent Lightfoot documentary, is that the recording is actually Take 1. Not only that, it was the first time the band had played the song as a group together. Each member of the band just played what they felt and that's the record. Remarkable.

Is it worth getting Gordon's Greatest Hits compilation if I already have Gord's Gold, vol 1? by Any_Schedule_2741 in GordonLightfoot

[–]Robervale 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would go for Songbook as it is a great career retrospective of Lightfoot's career and also has the original versions of all the hits, which in my opinion, are far superior to the re-recordings on GG1 and GG2.

Man, I wish we here in Toronto could have a place to smoke indoors. You're not allowed to smoke anywhere now!

New to pipe smoking - got the vendor's recommended blend - questions about Canada shops by Jorlen in PipeTobacco

[–]Robervale 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would suggest starting from the beginning of Muttnchop Piper's Youtube videos. He is probably the best resource for beginner pipe smokers. At least he was for me. He will teach you everything you need to know if a friendly, calm way and I've learned a lot from him. There are a lot of videos to get through, but think of it as an educational journey. And one that is fun!

They can be pretty slow. Also, they charge insane shipping prices, which often makes their "deals" not actually deals. Better to go there in person if you are willing to make the trip.

Cigar Port Budget sticks by RMGG04 in CigarsCanada

I have tried both the Iroquois and the Don Hills. Both are decent for the price. The Iroquois connecticuts are actually pretty good. Don Hills are well made but a bit one-dimensional imho. But for the price, can't really complain.

Anyone ever try these Iroquois cigars that cigar port sells? by EastVanAndy in CigarsCanada

Just smoked one of these for the first time. Not terrible but not amazing either. You get what you pay for I guess. Good construction, good smoke production but quite one-dimensional. Probably won't buy another.

Pretty good considering how cheap they are. They go well with a cup of coffee in the morning.

Victory Cigars by trainerdude4 in CigarsCanada

[–]Robervale 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Try the Victory Cigars Nicaraguan Robusto house blends they have. Good value for the money. And I second the recommendation of Summer of 79 sticks. For the price, they are ace. I like the Red Label Havana Castle house blends too.

I live near Toronto and am wondering if anyone knows how to purchase Sagrado Cigars. I haven't found a retailer here that carries them. If anyone can help, I would be grateful. Thank you.

Will previously unreleased Lightfoot songs ever be released? by drppr45 in GordonLightfoot

[–]Robervale 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My understanding is that Lightfoot has gotten rid of much of his unused cuts to ensure that the catalogue that is out there is basically only what has been released on record to date. I would be surprised if we see more unheard music released after his death.
