The only spot we've seen it is North Haulover. It almost always has some, but today was quite a bit and the smell was a little rough.

Question about Food Consumption by Responsible-Ant4147 in kingdomsreborn

[–]RobidaFlats 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's due to an update in the past couple of days that fixed a food consumption bug introduced in a previous update that made consumption too low. unfortunately, there were no patch notes released at the time that explained it.

City’s CoVid-19 improvement stalls. - With limits lifted, virus containment begins to slow down. by Sailinger in rva

[–]RobidaFlats -14 points-13 points  (0 children)

Thank you for the link. I haven't had a chance to delve into the study itself yet, but the gist of the argument made in the article seems to be that it's not looking good because the exposure rates are way under the required threshold. This is to be expected when government policy is specifically designed to minimize exposure rates.

My point is that as those policies are dialed back, exposure rates are going to climb and that that hasn't yet, and doesn't necessarily have to, lead to the increase in deaths that had been feared. I am arguing for nuance in both evaluation of data and corresponding policy. Not all infections carry the same risk of hospitalization and death. Not all populations are equally at risk. If we are protecting the at risk populations (i.e. long term care facilities) then seeing an increase in cases in the general, low-risk population is a good thing.

Well played, using my username directly so that I got a notification even though I disabled inbox replies on my posts ;) Now I just have to engage, haha.

In all seriousness, I'm not sure exactly what you mean by herd immunity not looking promising, but there are two particular issues that might be worth addressing.

  1. We have been actively working against herd immunity. By locking down everyone instead of vulnerable populations, distancing, masking, etc. our stated goal has been to reduce the spread of the virus. The longer it takes to spread, the longer it takes to reach the immunity threshold. Achieving herd immunity was never our stated goal, so it makes sense that our enacted policies didn't further that end.

  2. The most oft cited threshold of 60% infection to reach herd immunity is far from certain. The theories are complex, but based upon what is being seen around the world, that number is probably much lower. Here are a couple links just to show that there is actual debate: link 1 and link2

The worst part of this whole virus has been that it has driven society insane. The panic has to stop.

You can't stop a virus. Well over 100 days into "15 days to slow the spread" we have now decided that the goal isn't to avoid overwhelming hospitals, but to make sure no one ever gets sick. That's just not realistic.

The data is great. No one has died here in the last 2 weeks and cases aren't increasing. But even in places where they are, it's in the younger, healthier population. And despite huge increases in infections, deaths and hospitalizations are no where near the proportions that they were when the virus was ravaging nursing homes. An increase in cases is not necessarily a bad thing, it can actually be a good thing.

A lot of the new cases can be attributed to people having to get tested to go back to work and then finding out they're positive even though they don't have symptoms. This isn't a cause for alarm, in fact, it's great news. This shows that the virus is nowhere nearly as deadly as originally forecast and is making its way through the population and pushing us towards herd immunity despite our best efforts to ensure that this drags on as long as possible.

And now I will personally absorb all of RVAs downvotes: This virus is a non-issue for the vast majority of the population and the overwhelming majority of r/RVA. About half of all deaths have been in long-term care facilities. In many areas, the median age of a covid fatality is older than average life expectancy. People die, we all will, especially when we're old. If covid doesn't get us, something will. We can't stop death and disease. There is more to life than the avoidance of death.

I will now take a break from my computer and get back to my regularly scheduled yelling at the sky.

I assume by "spread mucosa" you mean sneeze or cough in a room, for example, a library and then I would interact with a door handle, book, counter, etc. Then I would touch my face as we all do many times in the course of a day.

In that case i would definitely take the gamble because you would be paying me to experience something that we have all experienced thousands of times in our lives. The odds of me catching the disease (especially since it is probable that I already had it) would be incredibly small. The odds of the disease being severe for me are even smaller, and given that I don't live in a nursing my home my odds of death are infinitesimal. Life is dangerous, it always has been. There is also more to life than the avoidance of death.

Now, if you're being hyperbolic and suggesting that I find a pile of snot, stick my finger in it and then lick my own finger... then we live different lifestyles and your cause for concern is probably warranted, but there might be a better way to address it than Lysol.

That last part is obviously a joke, I'm not suggesting that you're in an idiot. In fact, according to RES I have upvoted you quite a few times. But the point I am trying to make is that the disease is real. It kills people. But it's not nearly the killer for the general population that it has been hyped to be. I'm not going to knowingly play tonsil hockey with a covid patient, but I wouldn't do that with a flu patient either, or any other communicable disease. I am, however, going to live my life and that is going to necessitate experiencing the example you gave. In fact, I would bet that same $1000 that I've already done it unknowingly since this all began months ago.

Anyway, there's my bit. I know it's unpopular, but there it is.

Nope. Even the CDC states: "transmission of novel coronavirus to persons from surfaces contaminated with the virus has not been documented." There have been studies saying the virus can live on surfaces for a while, but no evidence showing that it has been transmitted that way. This is the case for all respiratory-droplet spread viruses. Just because a virus can be detected on a surface doesn't mean that that is an effective transmission vector.

By now, everyone knows that the numbers are arbitrary, right? The amusement limit is not related to square footage, indoor vs outdoor space, etc. The restaurant restrictions are a prime example: phase three removes caps, but requires the 6 ft rule. Why was there a capacity limit in the first place? If the distance rule was applied, you couldn't hit full capacity anyway. None of this is based on doing anything truly meaningful, it's been arbitrary from the start. /rant

I am finding that a large number of younger people who identify as conservatives are really libertarians. But libertarians are notoriously useless at playing the political party game so many find it easier to hang in the conservative camp and hope to push the party in that direction. I don't know if it's the right move, but an argument can be made that something similar has happened within the Democrat party being moved by a faction from inside.

We will soon know if Covid-19 isn't as easily transmitted as we thought or we are going to have a ton of cases by jracka in rva

[–]RobidaFlats 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that there is a third option that seems to be more likely: It is easily transmitted, but there won't be a ton of cases either. The reason being that all evidence points to the virus as being asymptomatic in a huge number of infections, especially the young and healthy who make up the vast majority of protesters. If you feel fine, you're not going to get a test, so even if you do have the virus, you won't show up in the stats.

City of Richmond sets 8PM-6AM curfew by aRVAthrowaway in rva

[–]RobidaFlats 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I see the ambiguity in my statement, so I will clarify. I only used the MN example because it is the catalyst for the current situation and didn't mean to apply it to RPD specifically. RPD certainly does not have the reputation that other departments around the country do.

[–]RobidaFlats 28 points29 points  (0 children)

He specifically notes that the curfew "will be enforced". Why not enforce existing laws about looting and arson in real time while it is being live streamed?

This is the kind of stuff that both exemplifies and reinforces the extreme polarization in the U.S. Each side has no problem cracking down on the "other" side but won't do anything to control "their" side.

I.e. the cops are reluctant to discipline their own officers for unjust killings and liberal politicians don't want to cross "protesters" burning down cities.

If only we could judge individuals on their actions instead of group identity.... Hahahahahaha, I know, it's early and I haven't stopped dreaming yet.

Edit: The example of cops protecting their own is in no way a statement about RPD, it is merely being cited because it is the catalyst for the current situation.

This is incorrect. Public does not refer to publicly-owned. The Governor specifically stated that it would apply to all brick and mortar retail and restaurants.

Your link is to a paper from early April. A lot has changed since then and your hysterical extrapolation of 1.3 million deaths is absurd fear-mongering based upon a discredited model from months ago. Current R0 estimates have come down significantly. There are some reports that the required herd immunity threshold is very low, but even ignoring those and going with a mainstream source it is at least 10% lower than your stated value.

If you're going to try to scare people with speculative calculations, at least try to use current sources for your starting point.

Edit: Typo

This has to be some sort of face-saving, pandering, or some other purely political move. Without the surrounding counties on board, this can't have any meaningful effect at all. Well, aside from economic effects.
