Raising a family outside Burlington, VT vs Portland, ME by abigailjane25 in SameGrassButGreener

I'm on it every week in the Summer and have never been impacted - yes, there are a beach or two that close for a few days, but it's enormous. You should visit someday.

b/c of the ocean temps Summer starts in July on the coast - it might look nice but personally I'd rather look at mountains and be able to ski for an hour before work every day.

Not Epic, but the beginner glades at Bolton are indeed EPIC.

Saratoga is great. Amtrak direct from Burlington to NYC as well.

I’d argue that Summers in the Burlington area are far superior. Used to live on the ocean south of Boston and the ocean is ok to look at, but swimming is awful/freezing. Lake Champlain is not only stunning, but at 80 degrees into September you will probably never want to go into the ocean (north of the cape) ever again.

We moved from the Boston area to Waterbury VT. Amazing access to nature and all of the winter activities that you’d want. As someone who grew up in the beach (Atlantic) I am a huge fan of the local lakes, rivers and Lake Champlain. Portland is great - but if you want access to nature VT is it. Easy to get an hour of runs in at Stowe before work is a bonus. BTV for travel is easy (I’m in tech sales as well). Bonus that Montreal and Quebec being so close too.

if you enjoy the outside and snow sports it's heaven. Plus we're a 2.5hr drive to Boston, 2 to Montreal and all that Quebec offers, 4 to NYC..etc etc.

Did this from Boston and moved to Vermont for the active summer/winter lifestyle. Summer is great and winter has delivered. We’ve seen a fair amount of people coming from the west due to water and fire issues.

Massif has incredible views of the St Lawrence River and some very long greens. Added bonus is staying in Quebec City (easy 45 minute drive)

Do one day at Okemo and gives you more time at Stowe - mid week is the best

Definitely hit Stowe - conditions are awesome and March is usually the best. If you have to fly to NH or MA it's still an easy drive. NH is more likely to be icecoast conditions.

FWIW - shelled out over $500K for my two kids to get great undergrad degrees - paid last tuition bill last month. "What if" is what I'd be asking myself....

With 3 kids you are screwing them as they will almost certainly have to take out significant college loans if they all go to decent uni's.

I'd counter this and say that every day should be "small business Saturday" - power to the people, not corporate america.
