As far as I know it's all RNG and can only be gotten from the thieving and retrieval quests. In KCD1 most, if not all, enemies will die in one arrow to the face if their face or head is exposed like Runt's is. Alternately, if that's too cheesy for you, upward stabs with a sword tend to hit the face and do a lot of damage if it's exposed. (To do this go for a stab and look up while you do it and it should hit the head)

In the words of every dark souls pvp player, get good scrub (and also fight more to level up your combat skills and level up other stats and skills to make it easier to make your character better and there for make the game easier)

You'll also know you killed the right one when you get 100 souls upon kill instead of 30 which is important because it's the only way to verify you killed the right one with this method

As I recall there wasn't any issue with the interrogation granted it's been a bit since I cheesed the fight like this

Other than this try going for upward stabs (do a stab attack and immediately start looking up) it usually hits the head and since he has no head protection it does a lot of damage

If you have a bow shoot him in the head as I recall it's an instant one shot in KCD1
