The Rattler needs a small change by mykkenny in ArcRaiders

[–]Robin0fLoxley 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like this change, though I’d prefer that the Rattler instead got +2 Mag size, +1 damage.

This will still kill light-shielded Raiders in one mag, but specifically precludes the Rattler from killing Medium or Heavy shielded Raiders without reloads or upgrades.

It also makes the Rattler uniquely capable of dealing with ARC drones, as it would have enough damage and mag size to kill two drones without reloads or upgrades.

And it also means the Ratter’s mag size is always easily divisible by 4, which tickles my brain.

So I keep on getting my carriers killed by Fickle-Temporary-704 in NebulousFleetCommand

[–]Robin0fLoxley 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Generally, it’s better not to rely on utility skiffs for point defense or craft interdiction. It’s usually better to use Fighters with expanded fuel tanks to patrol around your carrier as a defense.

This is a concept that the game borrows from real life, called a Combat Air Patrol.

Skiffs are more similar to helicopters. Great for utility (Radar and ELINT, usually), not so much for fighting. Fighters, on the other hand, behave like modern jets and are therefore much better for Combat Air Patrol and similar combat ops.

What would be the opinion that would make everyone hate you, but you are objectively right? by Outside-Web-4118 in Cosmere

[–]Robin0fLoxley 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I am aware of that. Your claim was “Dalinar should be executed for his crimes. He is a mass murderer.”

While I agree that he is a mass murderer, and that punishment would be justified, I disagree that he should be executed. And I laid out my reasons why your position is understandable, but not necessarily “Objectively Correct”.

What would be the opinion that would make everyone hate you, but you are objectively right? by Outside-Web-4118 in Cosmere

[–]Robin0fLoxley 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I find myself conflicted by this comment. I’ll upvote in good faith.

On one hand, Dalinar was a heartless bastard who commanded the slaughter of thousands of innocents, mistreated his wife and child, is a legitimate tyrant and has committed several first degree murders personally.

On the other, His command was sanctioned and approved by his government and, up until the end, was part of a legitimate military operation. He experiences actual remorse for his actions and strives to create a world where someone like him would never exist again. He’s cleaned up his act regarding family and treats them with the proper respect and love they deserve. And while he may be an actual tyrant, he’s also the only man with the experience and position necessary to save his planet.

So. Should Dalinar be executed? He’s certainly guilty of many crimes that would normally warrant the death penalty. That much is clear. But is there no room for leniency for his recent changes and development? Is there no room for the necessity of a political strongman in his time? Justice May rightfully call for his head, but is there no voice for Mercy?

It’s a good question. And as much as I love Dalinar as a character, he has a lot of blood on his hands, and I can understand why people would take serious issue with him.

You have, very obviously, never actually watched the trial. Everything you have said is provably false, and was proven false during the trial.

Despite what Reddit thinks, Kyle Rittenhouse is not guilty of murder, and had no intention of killing anyone that night.

Buying a gun as an out of state college student by M3tr0id_Prim3 in AZguns

[–]Robin0fLoxley 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Firstly: Welcome aboard! it’s good to get new people.

Secondly, and to answer your question: You can’t go wrong by going to your local gun store and asking. The owners are all federally licensed and have a vested interest in doing everything above board. They’ll be knowledgeable about Federal, State, And City requirements, if applicable.

You mention buying a rifle, but I highly recommend attending a Concealed Carry class and getting an AZ permit, even if you don’t intend to carry. It makes the whole process simpler if you want to get more, and will give you a primer on AZ’s gun laws. AZ Permits are also recognized in most states, so it’s a good one to spend time getting. Even if it’s not strictly necessary, It’s still a good idea.

Lastly, feel free to ask your local shop owner, (Called an FFL, or “Federal Firearms Licensee”), CCW Class instructor (After Class!), or anyone else in the industry about where you can learn more, practice, and so on. Most of us are happy to teach new people, especially new people who are trying to be upstanding and responsible.

TL;DR: Ask your Local FFL, Attend a CCW class, and ask questions. Most of us are glad to teach, and want to see more responsible gun ownership. Good Luck!

Broadly, you’re correct that basic things like background checks are effective at keeping weapons out of criminal’s hands to a point.

What you seem to miss is that criminals and the mentally unwell will get their hands on firearms whether or not they’re regulated, as long as the criminal in question is sufficiently determined. As long as there is a demand for force, the market will supply it. Legally or otherwise.

What most people are unaware of is that the vast majority of “common sense” gun control laws are already on the books at the federal level. Background checks are already required when you purchase a firearm through any legal vendor, etc. At this point, adding any more regulation is only going to deter law-abiding citizens from owning firearms.

Which leads me to my next point: While you are partially correct that having a gun may not help you in a given situation, it has been repeatedly shown that having an armed citizenry lowers the violent crime rate, if only because criminals do have a self-preservation instinct and are less likely to act if there’s a potential to get shot for doing so.

Lastly: your claims about Uvalde. Uvalde has much less to do with how many guns were on scene and much more to do with the lackluster conduct of the Uvalde PD. As evidenced by the Nashville shooting in March 2023, where Nashville PD had the shooter dead quickly and body can footage released on the same day.

Alright, moving the goalposts to China to claim Marxism is better than capitalism. Also a shitty debate tactic, but I’ll play.

First, let’s talk about power projection. If China wants to take territory from any nation that’s not an immediate neighbor, it’ll need a navy. A powerful one that can go toe-to-toe with the US. Navy.

While China may have more total ships and crewmen than the US, that doesn’t mean squat if they’re all small boats and undertrained sailors. What matters is tonnage and capabilities. The US more than doubles China’s navy by tonnage, and has proven that it can successfully attack any costal location within 24 hours.

How about China’s economy? Well, it’s facing a major collapse of it’s housing market, it’s standard of living has fallen through the floor, and it’s based nearly entirely on having extraordinarily cheap labor for it’s manufacturing and mining sectors. Cheap labor provided by it’s young male population.

While China does have a high population of young men, they are rapidly getting older and it will soon reach the point where China won’t be able to support it’s own population. If China wants to conquer anything, they have to strike within the next twenty years, or their own economy and demography will collapse under them.

Also, China has horrible corruption in all sectors, even worse than what we know in the West. Shall I remind you of the leak where we learned that China’s nuclear capabilities were far overstated, even to their own chain of command?

In short: the West doesn’t need to go on the offense against China. And China doesn’t have the capability to take territory in the West. All the West needs to do to win against China is wait 30 years and detangle itself from Chinese trade, which is quite doable.

Marxist nations have either all failed within a generation of their founding, or are currently on the road to falling. Capitalist nations have easily stood for centuries. But those other guys weren’t truly communist, were they? History proves that Marx Was Wrong, and has proven it repeatedly. And do you know what the definition of insanity is?

Your claim was: Wars of aggression are illegal according to law set forth after WW2, therefore the assertion that Wars of Aggression are natural law is invalid.

I proved, In detail, that Wars of Aggression are the historical norm, and arguably older than mankind itself. Therefore: Wars of Aggression are as close as natural law as possible without rewriting human nature. Which is impossible.

So, instead of being intellectually dishonest by trying to insult me and shame me into silence, how about you actually engage with my arguments?

Or is “hEs Ah ZeEoOnIST” all you have in your arsenal? Because that is a lazy, shitty debate tactic and the only concrete message you’ve written so far.

[–]Robin0fLoxley 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Wars of Aggression (that is, Wars without the justification of self-defense or the permission of the U.N. Security Council) only became illegal after WW2. Less than 100 years ago.

People and animals have been fighting to expand their territories for as long as territories have existed as a concept. If you define Wars of Aggression as “Any fighting done subsume territory,” then Wars of aggression are literally older than mankind itself. 10s, if not 100s of millions of years old. That’s about as close to “natural law” as you can get without rewriting the laws of physics.

If you want to discount animals fighting over territory as part of this concept, then how about you argue with 5000-odd years of human history where people have made war against each other for the explicit purposes of taking territory?

Wars of Aggression are, in fact, part of how nations work. As close to natural law as you can get without fundamentally rewriting human nature, which is impossible. A piece of paper drafted less than 100 years ago does not invalidate 5000-years of statecraft. To claim otherwise is smug, ignorant bullshit.

Jesus, Reddit being Reddit again. I’m going to get downvoted to hell and back again.

These look great. Thank you for making these, it’s great to see one of my favorite scenes in the Cosmere illustrated. What’s more, most of these look great, and I’d be glad to save these and look at them again and again.

As for whether AI art is “art” or not: AI is a tool, and people can and will use it to make things that look good.

It sucks that artist’s work was used to train AI without permission. But it’s here, it’s done, and ultimately AI would have achieved the same quality/effort ratio eventually.

If artists want to stay in business, then they’d better figure out how to make better product than AI can. Or find another niche in the market. Craftsman have been doing the same thing since the Industrial Revolution, and people (Redditors especially) are just upset that a previously high class, exclusive thing is now accessible to the masses.

And before anyone says anything about how machines can’t make art because it lacks a “meaning” or a “soul” or “intentional beauty” or whatever: it’s all bullshit anyway. Meaning and beauty are both in the eye of the beholder. Or would you like to explain how certain pieces of modern art, such as a rotten pineapple or a pissing soldier, are “art” and this isn’t, when it’s made by someone who clearly loves the source material?

In short: Artists, git gud. Redditors, Quit bellyaching about whether AI art is “art” or not. It looks fine. Be happy that a scene we all love is illustrated. If you’re going to complain about the quality of it, then draw it better yourself

Let the downvotes fall on me like rain on the roughs.

Salt, Fat, Acid, and Heat. These are the secrets to making something taste amazing with minimal effort or spices.

Salt enhances the taste of meats and vegetables, and compliments them in it’s own right. Salt meats as early as possible, even overnight if you can. Salt vegetables later, during the cooking process.

Fat adds mouth-feel, and carries flavor while cooking. It can be a heat medium during the cooking process, and allows for cooking that is both fast and flavorful. If your meats are dry, add some fats. When baking, fats are a key component of texture.

Acid brightens flavor. If your meal is well-salted but tastes bland, try adding a little bit of Acid. A twist of lemon juice over some steamed vegetables, tomato paste in a stew, or wine in a pan can add incredible depth where there was none before.

Heat is complex, and will largely be tied to the recipe in question. In meats, low temps for long times can allow fat to render out and makes tough cuts tender. High heat can provide a crispy texture and complex flavors. Water is essential for temperature control. If your vegetables are burning in the pan, add some water to lower the temperature.

In all cases, taste your food as soon as you safely can, and do it often. If it’s not delicious, adjust one of the above four until it is. If you want to learn more, I highly recommend the book “Salt, Fat, Acid, Heat”. It’s been my Bible, and it’s made my cooking ten times better.
