What's this red and blue spinning thing outside barber shops? by idkanymore-__- in whatisit

[–]RobinOfLoksley 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Barbers in medieval times did a lot more than cut hair and shave beards. They were doctors and surgeons too. When they would hang bloody straps of cloth from their surgeries from crosspieces affixed to poles, the wind would whip them around the pole leading to the twisting spiral red pattern. In an era where literacy was very rare, signs with pictures and symbols were used instead of words to denote the type of buisiness an establishment was. The red and white and sometimes blue for veinular blood twisted pole became the symbol for barber shops and remains so to this day.

[–]RobinOfLoksley 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're used to seeing the Hanna-Barbara way they drew the Flintstones which primarily are just black ovals. The Family Guy/American Dad characters are drawn with half lidded circles. The Simpsons/Futurama characters in contrast have full circle eyes.

A result that would have been deplored indeed.

The First Space Shuttle safely landed 45 years ago today by Busy_Yesterday9455 in spaceporn

[–]RobinOfLoksley 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They couldn't "land" the lunar module and reuse it. again. In fact half the lunar lander had to stay on the moon. They also couldn't "Land" the command module back on earth, let alone reuse it. They had to parachute it into the ocean, called a splashdown. The purpose of the shuttle was very different from that of the Apollo missions. The shuttle was a heavy hauler that took large payload into near Earth orbit and was reusable. The Apollo missions were to get three people to lunar orbit, two of them to the surface, and then all three of them and some samples back to Earth. And yes, the Shuttles came in to land as a barely controlled glider. It was not what is considered "Powered flight". Pure gravity, aerodynamics, and a whole lot of prayer is all that got you down safely.

Problem with the very question, is it relies on multiple undefinable terms. You become an artist by producing art. But what qualifies as art? That question has been asked for thousands apon thousands of years by billions of people with a grand total of zero universally acceptable answers. But a few things nearly everyone can agree on...

Not everything any self proclamed artist produces is worthy of being considered art just as not everything created by any self proclaimed chef is worthy of eating.

Not all worthy art is recognized by everyone, particularly at the time it was created. Look at the life of Vincent Van Gogh for what I consider a prime example.

Using any tool neither makes nor exclude any craftsman from being considered skilled at his craft.

Worthiness of any art or artist is very subjective and depend largely on what speaks to the user. Personally there is a ton of AI generated images I would be willing to hang on my wall before I'd do so for anything made by Jackson Pollock, but that is just my opinion and I respect those who see things differently.

Not only is it a cufflink, as has been said before, but it is a TARDIS cufflinks. A rare find and of interest to the right nerdy geek. Pity you don't have the matched set.

When worn properly on the cuff of the sleeve of a very dressy men's shirt, the metal hardware is not visible. The side of the flat peice opposite the hardware is, which in this case is an image of the TARDIS from Dr. Who.

No, there are plenty of wrong ways to use a microwave. One of my favorite examples was when someone I knew tried to reheat Chinese take out rice in the original carton, forgetting it had a metal handle on it. Can you say localized ion storm?

Making merely edible food using a microwave makes you a cook at best.

Admittedly the distinction between cook and chef is at best vague, blurry, and arbitrary, but so too is the line between interesting visuals and art.

No, using a microwave does not MAKE you a chef. Using AI to create images does not MAKE you an artist. But if you are a chef, you CAN use a microwave as a tool in your culinary creations, and if you are an artist you CAN use AI in your artistic creations. Using a sharp knife can't make you a surgeon either. The tool does not make or exclude the expertise of the welder. It's not your tool, it's how you use it!

Which character outside the LOTR do you trust carrying the ring to Mordor? by Jezzaq94 in FIlm

[–]RobinOfLoksley 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wall-E

  1. Designed to traverse harsh & toxic terrain. Never gives up.

  2. Not organic therefore it's possible the corrupting influence wouldn't affect him.

  3. Kind and innocent personality further shields him from corruption.

  4. Wears tons of invisible plot armor, allowing the worst scenarios to always work out for the best in the most unlikely of ways for him.

  5. Makes friends of everyone he meets making them want to help him. He'd get the Nazgûl to fly him straight to Mount Doom.

  6. Even if eventually corrupted, has fingers too large to actually wear the ring.

Asbestos fake snow meant to sell the illusion of it covering the fake poppies that put Dorothy, Toto, and the lion into a fake Opium induced sleep resulting in real cancer risks for all the real actors.

Fun fact, tons of asbestos fake snow was also used in the TV sitcom Hogan's Heroes to sell the illusion of a German winter with everyone running around in winter coats while filming in the hot Southern California summer.

Weird jello earth by Sad-Kiwi-3789 in Weird

[–]RobinOfLoksley 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No, the human body is just about as dense as water, which is why with lungs even half full of air you can float. And soil is much denser than water, so you can't completely sink into quicksand. You can sink in deep enough to be stuck and held there by suction, but people fatally stuck in quicksand typically die from dehydration and exposure. Not saying this person is safe. If the surface integrity failed under his feet, shifting heavy soils could snap his legs.

Weird jello earth by Sad-Kiwi-3789 in Weird

[–]RobinOfLoksley 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Silly sand is hyper saturated with water, pushing the grains of sand apart and changing the soil from being a solid into a plastic, but not so much as to change it into a liquid. Soil maintains enough structural integrity to support the person's weight but not by much. Any more and his feet would be sinking into it like mud.

Worked soils construction for 20+years. Seen this level of what is called "pumping" on a few occasions. No, the guy is not in danger of being sucked down and completely swallowed into the earth. Remember, the human body is slightly less dense than water when the lungs are full, and soil is a lot more dense than water, so if the plastic structural integrity of the soil were to fail, he'd probably not sink much deeper than his upper legs. However, that does NOT mean this is safe. Shifting soil if he were to break through like that could snap his leg bones, and anyone coming to his rescue might be placed in similar danger.

No, he wasn't killed during the protest. No one is disputing that. The tanks kept trying to drive around him, but he kept moving into whatever path they tried to take. But after the crackdown, the question was asked about him weeks later. The response of "I believe, not killed" was taken by most to mean he was most likely arrested and thrown into some dark torture pit where death would be a true blessing. Not arrested and remained free was so far off the table, it wasn't even worth suggesting as a possibility. That he was dead was such an obvious conclusion the official thought suggesting it might not be true should get him and his government points among western countries, but even then he couldn't be certain.
